Frisky Rant: Why Highly Qualified Veteran Nurses Are Being Sent Back To School

What would you do if your employer told you that you had to go back to school for more training in your profession — even after years, maybe decades, working in a field you’ve already excelled in? Ask a nurse.

New recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, a non-profit group that advises the government and industry on health issues, are pushing for 80 percent of all nurses to obtain Bachelor’s degrees in Nursing by 2020 in an effort to improve patient care. Their belief is that patients receive better care in hospitals where nurses have higher-level academic degrees.

But while exhausted RNs are neck deep in their Nutrition textbooks after working 12-hour shifts, I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I think this is complete bullshit. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Group Complains Nursing Program Teaches Students About Abortion

  • A Christian legal group has filed a civil rights complaint against a Vanderbilt University nursing program for putting a statement on its application that informs students the program will involve interacting with women who may have just had an abortion and suggesting if they cannot handle that, they should consider applying to a different program. “It is important that you are aware of this aspect of care and give careful consideration to your ability to provide compassionate care to women in these situations,” the application states. “If you feel you cannot provide care to women during this type of event, we encourage you to apply to a different track of the Nurse Residency Program to explore opportunities that may best fit your skills and career goals.” The complaint was filed on behalf of an unnamed Mississippi woman. Two Tennessean law experts said Vanderbilt has not actually done anything wrong. [The Tennessean]

Today’s Lady News: Dr. Oz Spanked For Naughty Nurses Segment

  • Time for some triage, Oprah: “The Dr. Oz Show” is in trouble for stereotyping naughty nurses! A November segment featured six women — uh, not nurses — dressed in retro nurse costumes with red lingerie peeking out and high heels as they danced around host Dr. Mehmet Oz. Klassy! A group called The Truth About Nursing called the segment a “sexist caricature of nursing” that further demeans the predominantly female profession. “The Dr. Oz Show” apologized and called it an “attempt at humor.” [AP]
  • The Catholic Anchor, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Anchorage, published an article which said Planned Parenthood would be offering gift certificates for abortions. This article got picked up by other news outlets, despite the fact that it’s patently untrue: Planned Parenthood is, in fact, offering coupons for preventative services, such as birth control pills, but the coupons are not available for abortions. Girls In LEGO-land Are Either A Cheerleader Or A Nurse

Facepalm. What kind of bull hooey is this? LEGO has these thingies called “minifigures,” which are little LEGO people dressed up in different outfits. There’s a spaceman. A cowboy. A magician. A deep sea diver. A zombie with a shovel and a chicken drumstick. And even a kick-ass robot! But all of those minifigures — and more — apparently have tiny little yellow LEGO penises. (OK, not really. But they are all boy LEGOs.) The only two that are women are a cheerleader and a nurse.

Geez Louise. I’m actually shocked there’s no secretary or waitress. Keep reading »

Czech Nurses Score Bigger Boobs

The global financial crises has forced every industry to get a little creative. Rather than go with the stodgy “buy one get one free” approach of many struggling industries, the Czech health care system is wooing its nurses with unusual pizazz. Like most countries around the world, the Czech Republic’s health care system is teetering on the brink of collapse, in part due to the nursing shortage. The Czech Republic is in a particular bind: Nurses are emigrating to other countries for better pay and opportunity while fewer people are training to become nurses due to the negative stereotypes left over from communism. The idea of using incentives to encourage employees to renew their contracts is hardly newsworthy. The fact that some Czech medical establishments are using incentives like free breast implants, liposuction and tummy tucks does raise my eyebrows. (Not for long, however, should I decide to become a Czech nurse and opt for a face lift or Botox.) Keep reading »
