Russell Crowe Thinks Older Actresses Should Stop Whining About The Lack Of Female Roles In Hollywood

“To be honest, I think you’ll find that the woman who is saying that [the good roles for women have dried up is] the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can’t understand why she’s not being cast as the 21-year-old. … Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that’s bullshit, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be. If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you’re still the young buck when you’re my age, it just doesn’t work.”

Ugh, can someone please throw a phone at Russell Crowe‘s head, because he really needs to STFU. In an interview with Australia’s Women’s Weekly, the temperamental actor opined about how the best thing about Hollywood is how many roles there are for every stage of life — including for women, so don’t listen to what all those whiny broads are saying! Nevermind the fact that studies have shown that women are grossly underrepresented in Hollywood, with approximately 30 percent of the speaking roles in film in any given year; nevermind the many, many, many respected female actresses who have complained about the lack of roles for women, in particular older women; nevermind, say, this statistic which indicates that the majority of all female roles are for 21 to 39-year-olds — Russell Crowe says there are TONS of great roles for women of all ages! Russell Crowe presumes to speak for Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, two of the best known older actresses who still manage to find work! Russell Crowe knows all! Keep reading »

Not This Crap Again: Girl Kicked Out Of Prom For Wearing Pants

shafer rupard

A North Carolina high school senior was kicked out of her high school prom not because she was sneaking booze, not because she was humping on the dance floor, but because she was wearing pants.

Shafer Rupard from  Cherryville, North Carolina, showed up to her prom rocking her adorable Justin Bieber-esque haircut and wearing red skinny jeans, a leather jacket and a hat. She was allowed into the Senior Prom at Cherryville Golf & Country Club, but then was approached on the dance floor by a teacher and asked to leave. Keep reading »

Not This Crap Again: Phyllis Schlafly Says Women Should Be Paid Less So We Find Husbands

It’s about time human mothball Phyllis Schlafly got tucked away in the attic of history. But somehow, someway, the anti-feminist and founder of the uber-conservative Eagle Forum is still sharing dumb, archaic ideas that were rejected by society over half a century ago. Her latest batch of craziness is an op-ed in the Christian Post about how the “pay gap” is a bunch of bunk. Women just don’t want to work as hard as men, you see! Men work at harder jobs! Oh, and also, what do ladies need money for anyway? Don’t we know paying our own bills ourselves scares away the menfolk? Keep reading »

Not This Crap Again: Virginia Politician Calls Pregnant Women “Hosts”

You can count on me to never get in the way of you “preventing an unintentional pregnancy.” I’m not actually sure what that means, because if it’s “unintentional” you must have been trying to prevent it. And, I don’t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I’m not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it.

This is what Virginia state senator Steve Martin (a jerk, but not the star of “The Jerk,” just so we’re clear) had to say in a recent Facebook post, apparently prompted by him receiving some unsolicited mail from a pro-choice group. Uh, while it’s cool and all that Martin doesn’t “expect” to do anything to prevent women’s access to contraceptives — unlike many politicians these days, unfortunately — referring to pregnant women as “hosts,” as if we’re aliens or a bad book written by Twilight‘s Stephenie Meyers, is pretty disturbing. Unfortunately, I think Martin is saying what most anti-choice politicians and activists actually think about women who find themselves pregnant — as mere incubators for the fetus growing inside them, their own lives suddenly meaningless. Kenyan Politician On Single Women: “If You Are 35 And Don’t Have A Husband, There Is Something Wrong”

“If you are 35 and don’t have a husband, there is something wrong. … We will start demanding that you are married before you are elected.  … You young ladies: look for husbands and get married. You are the ones causing problems. … Someone who is able to manage a home is equally able to run the affairs of the people. But if you cannot manage a home … can you manage public affairs?”

This is William Kabogo, the governor of Kiambu County in Kenya, who has since apologized for criticizing unmarried women who dare to run for office. He was throwing shade at an MP named Alice Ng’ang’a, who is unmarried and also happens to oppose Kabogo’s ideas on taxes. Obviously she has silly ideas about taxes because she is a woman who is single, duh. I hope this guy shuts up so he doesn’t give American politicians any worse ideas. [BBC]

“They’re young, they’re feisty, I think I can probably say have a bit of sex appeal, and they are just very very connected to the local area.”

– This is MP Tony Abbott, leader of Australia’s Liberal Party, when asked about two female politicians, Fiona Scott and Jackie Kelly. The best he could come up with to describe these professional women were their more … comely … attributes. Just what we all want in our politicians, right? Feisty with a bit of sex appeal! What a ringing endorsement. A reporter for the UK’s Telegraph noticed that even Abbott’s own daughter “appeared to wince.” [Telegraph UK, Guardian UK]
