Promising to be just as violent as any Bruce Willis flick, yet 1,000 times more creepy, Hollywood indie actresses are signing up for “Manson Girls,” a flick about Charles Manson and the young women in his life. Heather Matarazzo (“Welcome To The Dollhouse”), Thora Birch (“American Beauty”), and Nikki Blonsky (“Hairspray”) have all signed on to play impressionable — some would say stupid — girls drawn in by the charismatic cult leader and his group, The Family. Members of the Manson Family were known for committing crimes, most notably the gruesome murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate, who was then married to filmmaker Roman Polanski. According to the synopsis, “Manson Girls follows a young girl from a wealthy Malibu family who fell under Manson’s spell.” No word yet on who will play Charles Manson, but I can think of half a dozen dudes with the scary facial hair and crazy eyes to pull it off. When the opening shot of a TV show is a scale, one thing is clear: this show will be about weight. But true to what actress Nikki Blonsky told me in our recent Q&A, her new ABC Family show “Huge” is about so many things beyond just body size. “Huge” debuted on ABC Family last night and it’s cute, funny and just like Blonsky said, it’s unlike any other show on television. Visually, the show is a complete anomaly: Nearly every single actor is plus-sized. Their size stood out at first, but soon I forgot it was a show about kids at a weight-loss camp and just saw it as a show about kids.

Missing Nikki Blonsky from your life after the 2007 remake of “Hairspray”? Have no fear, she’s back again: not in a John Waters musical this time, but on “Huge,” a new TV series about plus-size teens at a weight loss camp.
“Huge” stars Blonsky, 21, as a girl sent to the camp by parents who want her to drop some pounds, which is not in her plans at all. Blonsky stars alongside Hayley Hasselhoff — yes, The Hoff’s daughter — who is totally gung-ho about losing weight because she’s convinced her life will be awesome if she’s skinny and hot. Most of the cast memebrs are plus-size actors and actresses. “I don’t think there’s ever been a full cast of plus size people before,” says Blonsky.

Those of us who got a kick out of John Waters’ “Hairspray” remake have been wondering just what breakout star Nikki Blonsky is up to. The good news? She’s been cast as the lead in a series on the ABC Family channel that will premiere in June. The bad news (I think)? The show is called “Huge” and takes place at the fictional Wellness Canyon, a weight-loss camp for teens.
