Carla Bruni certainly made her mark as one of the more, uh, contentious first ladies ever to hit French office: the longtime singer and model, not to mention the heiress to an industrial dynasty, made ceaseless waves with her swank wardrobe, party-girl past, and dubious intentions when she wed recently divorced French president Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. Sarkozy vacated office earlier this year (in favor of François Hollande, whose own live-in girlfriend has stirred up quite a bit of national strife herself), but his disheartening political demise was far and away from the last we’ve seen of the couple — Mr. and Mrs. Sarkozy have recently found themselves mired in allegations of corruption over illegal cash donations the former president may or may not have received from Liliane Bettencourt, the heiress to L’Oreal and France’s richest woman. And if you thought the disgraced couple’s public humiliation saturation point had maxed out (one would assume, after their mansion and offices were raided by police last month), well, it’s time to reconsider. Mary-Kate Olsen’s latest companion just so happens to be the half-brother of recently unemployed French president Nicolas Sarkozy. Olivier Sarkozy, 42, is managing director of the Carlyle Group and has been dating 25-year-old Olsen about one month, the New York Post reports. From the department of things-you-knew-but-hadn’t-been-confirmed, Carla Bruni has made an official statement that she is pregnant. This is after her father implied it back in May, after she’s been spotted wearing maternity clothes, and after being photographed in a bikini that revealed a wee bit of a baby bump. But, hey, everyone needs to take their own time making these matters public knowledge. In her statements, Carla implied that the pregnancy wasn’t planned. “The coming happiness [was] unexpected and unhoped for,” she said. Guess that’s what happens when you keep the queen waiting while you get it on?

Carla Bruni Pregnant With Twins, Magazine Claims

Carla Bruni is pregnant with twins, according to French magazine Voici. The 43-year-old singer/actress/model/French First Lady already has a nine-year-old son, Aurelian, from another relationship. Carla is allegedly due to have her first child/children by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in October. But Carla is being mum about any potential pregnancy. When asked in an interview on Monday if she is pregnant, the Telegraph claims Carla said:

“If you’ll allow me, I’d rather not answer these questions about my family. I’d love to talk to you woman to woman about my family life, my personal dreams – and I’m really a very chatty person. But on this subject, I’m going to keep quiet. Not through arrogance or because I like keeping secrets. I am remaining tight-lipped about that to protect something. I would really like to to talk about it, but then it would take over everything else. And besides, it also involves people, so I’m not answering.”

Sounds like a non-confirmation confirmation to me! Another magazine, VSD, claims a senior aide to President Sarkozy also confirmed her pregnancy in off-the-record remarks. Sarkozy’s communications officer refused to comment, saying “That is a subject that is none of my business.” I guess we’ll have to wait un petit peu longer for an official confirmation about a trés trés chic bébé.

Roman Polanski Has A Friend In A Really High Place — President Nicolas Sarkozy

Roman Polanski, who has dual citizenship in Poland and France, reportedly enlisted French President Nicolas Sarkozy in his bid for leniency in his child-sex case, according to the French newspaper L’Express. Polanski had Sarkozy hand-deliver a letter to President Barack Obama during last week’s nuclear weapons summit. In the missive, Polanski wrote that he believed the 47 days he spent in a California jail in 1977 and two months he spent confined in a Swiss jail last year were enough punishment for his now 32-year-old case. A spokesperson from Obama’s press office had no knowledge of the letter yesterday, but something tells me Obama, a father of two daughters, wouldn’t tarnish his presidency by getting involved in Polanski’s case. French Parliament Debates Burqa Ban

Toward the end of last month, French President Nicolas Sarkozy addressed Parliament, stating his position on burqas. He said the face-covering, body-length Muslim veils are an unacceptable symbol of “enslavement,” and that it’s not a religious issue, but simply a “sign of the subjugation, of the submission, of women.”

This discussion has resulted in threats from Muslim groups outside of France, but Parliament hasn’t made a decision on the matter just yet. A committee held its first meeting today, and Jean-Francois Cope, the head of the governing conservative party UMP, suggested a two-stage ban of burqas. Meaning there would be “six months to a year of dialogue, explanation, and warnings” before the ban would go into effect. Keep reading »
