The beauty at Nanette Lepore’s fall 2010 show was inspired by women in Renaissance paintings, but makeup artist Makky’s two-toned lips look anything but old-fashioned. He applied MAC Cosmetics’ MAC PRO lipstick in Charred Red, a dark burgundy, to the bottom lip. Then, he put Odyssey, a bright fuchsia, on the top. While Makky doesn’t recommend wearing this out on the street as-is, he suggested using two different (but not quite this different) colors for a similar effect. Just make sure to put the darker color on the bottom lip, because otherwise, he told us, your top lip will look thin. Good to know. Keep reading »
Model Coco Rocha has just claimed that she’s a runway-reject at 5′ 10″ and a size 4, and the fashion industry is getting more flack for its pin-thin models. Steven Kolb, of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, stood by the skinny standard and called the runway a world of fantasy where genetically svelte girls will always be in season. The problem is that while the council has set rules and regulations about age and body mass index, they have no way of enforcing these standards and don’t believe it is their job to do so. While some fashionistas don’t see any change on the way, Lynn Grefe, of the National Eating Disorders Association, thinks the change is going to come in the structure of the runway: “… they are going to have to widen the runway so this person can have a feeding tube on wheels.” Oooh, burn. You may recognize documentary filmmaker and photographer Lauren Greenfield’s work from Girl Culture, her photographic series that exposed what it’s like to grow up female in America, or “Thin,” her documentary on young women battling eating disorders. Now, Greenfield has taken on Fashion Week as her latest subject, seemingly using Fashion Weeks around the world as a way to examine our culture’s beauty obsession. A mix of snapshots and video footage, “Fashion Week” captures the awkward moments behind the scenes and on the runway as young women parade, and sometimes fall, in front of stony-faced onlookers, revealing the strange contradiction that is our worship of all things fashion. Why is “Project Runway” judge Nina Garcia sprawled on the sidewalk outside the Bryant Park tents at New York Fashion Week?
A) Tim Gunn turned into a tiny man, and she is trying to find him before he falls into a storm drain.
B) She saw a penny on the ground and is picking it up because that could be her lucky penny!!!!
C) It was icy. “Oh, sheesh,” she said, as every “Project Runway” loser within eye shot snickered.
- Despite the sudden increase in Alexander McQueen sales following the designer’s death, the label will likely shutter. The Gucci Group, the owners of the fashion house, feel that sales can’t be sustained without McQueen. Sad! [TimesOnline.co.uk]

Backstage at Cynthia Rowley, I spotted a new ‘do that some of you ladies out there (and certain people around here) are going to love. The curled bang look created by hairstylist Bok-Hee is just as retro as Simcha’s usual pompadour, but, as Bok-Hee told me, it has “a little modern twist.” To create the bang, Bok-Hee combed a section of hair forward and rolled it over a hair donut she had cut to fit the model’s forehead, pinning it into place. The rest of the hair was slicked back into a pony, and that’s it! This could also be a pretty slick way to try bangs before you commit to cutting your hair. Just pair with this purple MAC shadow they blended together to give the look a modern edge. Keep reading »
Prabal Gurung showed his first collection in February (before that he was design director at Bill Blass), but his name is on everyone’s tongue this season. Not only was he quoted in today’s New York Times article about getting into the fashion biz, but Rachel Zoe tweeted last night that she was wearing one of his designs. We got to peek backstage as the models were getting prepped for the show, where it was all about bringing out the inner bitch. Keep reading »
- The label is launching a new jewelry line. (They currently offer some slightly unwearable rope and tassel bedroom accessories and a few necklaces.) The designs to launch in September will be much stronger with leather cuffs adorned with silver plates and Swarovski crystals. [InStyle.co.uk]
- Also for fall, Agent Provocateur brings back its classics collection filled with the standard colors—pink, black, white, red—and featuring lacy corsets, nipple tassels, and demi-cup bras. [ViewOnFashion.com]
One of the beauty trends at New York Fashion Week was the reverse French manicure, where the moon, rather than the tip, is a different color from the rest of the nail. You might not remember this unless you’re a Batman nerd like me, but Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) had nails like this in “Batman and Robin.” Anyway, would you paint your nails like this? Keep reading »
