As Markets Fall, Heels Get Lower

While models stumble and tumble while strutting the runway in Fall 2009 shows like Hervé Léger, a few smart designers and fashion insiders are forgetting all about gorgeous-yet-painful high, higher, and highest heels and opting for more sensible shoes. Have they finally grasped that on the whole, people have less money to spend and need to make practical purchases (low wedges can be worn to work and on weekend trips to the grocery)? Keep reading »

Ashley Dupre And Kelly Cutrone Are A Match Made In Reality TV Heaven

Who sits in the front row at a fashion show is a big deal. That doesn’t mean, however, that wannabes aren’t sneaking in. At Friday’s Yigal Azrouël show, former callgirl Ashley Dupre found a spot in the front row, and she wasn’t even invited. Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Backstage Is Where The Magic Happens

This morning, I got up before sunrise and hoofed it from Brooklyn to the New York Public Library, where the women who walked in The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection were getting primped and pampered before the show. Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin, in a velour Juicy tracksuit, typed away on her phone while getting her hair curled. Susan Lucci looked like a pro getting her smoky eyes put on (damn does she look good for 61). Hairstylists combed and curled extensions still waiting to be attached to heads. Manicurists with tool belts ran around giving manis and pedis — a favorite color was the almost-nude Negligee. A woman shouted “Can I get an E.T.A. on Katie Couric?” into her headset. It was like opening night of my high school play, but with famous people. Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Barbie Gets Her Close-Up

New York Fashion Week kicked off this morning in the tents at Bryant Park. Inside the venue, there are Barbies everywhere — and not just the tall, thin, glamorous editors and buyers attending the shows. There’s a whole display that spells out “Barbie” in Barbies, each letter with a different doll. After the jump, more photos of the copious amount of Barbies in the tents (she is, after all, an official sponsor of Fashion Week). Keep reading »
