When a designer strays outside the box of beauty stalwarts, it’s a refreshing change, given our steady diet of so-called “trends” — smoky eyes, red lips, dewy skin, and bold brows. These ubiquitous looks are beautiful and striking, but they’re also easy go-tos, which on principle renders them, well, kind of boring. But with each new season comes a fresh crop of innovative makeup looks that we guarantee you’ll see on the red carpet come 2013. Behold, the six top trends we’ve spotted on the catwalk this week…

Just when I thought New York Fashion Week was going to come and go without any designer sending a sequined, feathered, red-nippled bustier down the runway, The Blonds (who also designed the outfit for Drag Queen Barbie) come through for me. Phew, that was close.
My favorite thing about fashion week is the craaaazy things designers parade down the runways in an effort to stand out, like bondage hula skirts and models with giant, eye-less lizard heads. My second favorite thing is looking at the season’s fresh crop of breathtakingly opulent gowns, and the Spring/Summer 2013 collections didn’t disappoint. Here are 21 of the most gorgeous gowns that showed up on the runways this week, many of which quite literally made my jaw drop when I saw them. So. Freakin’. Beautiful. Today, J. Crew showed its wares for next season, so you know Amelia was stoked. We swooned, on the other hand, for the new collection from Assembly, which has a real understated cool to it. The Row’s collection of oversized, flowy garments seemed to really reflect the Olsen twins’ personal style. And Rachel Roy’s collection showcased her girly, feminine chic. Check out those collections, along with Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson and Sophie Theallet, after the jump!
Spring and summer fashion is generally pretty predictable insofar as it is, well, summery — think airy, diaphanous fabrics in light, muted colors accented by eye-catching brights, and you’ve just about hit the nail on the head every time. As the S/S 2013 shows crop up, we get a good glimpse at what to expect come next year … and is it just me, or is it all turning out to be a bit darker than usual? That’s not to say that the season’s requisite lightness, comparably more cheerful than that of Autumn/Winter styles, has been sacrificed in favor of deeper, moodier hues; it’s just that all of the whites and pastels are offset by a whole lot of black. I’m the last to complain — black is the predominate color in my wardrobe — so yes, I am unquestionably biased, but I think the contrast serves to make the clothes all the more striking. Are you, like me, thrilled that some of your favorite black pieces might just make the spring/summer cut, or are you all about the whites and brights come June, regardless of what the runway dictates? Day 6 of fashion week and there were several strong shows: Rodarte, Karen Walker and Monique Lhuillier all impressed with their deeply feminine, highly wearable collections. Marc Jacobs’ clown-wear, not so much. Check out his runway looks, along with Alice + Olivia, Thom Browne, and more — after the jump!
As New York Fashion Week slogs on, we’ve seen some commonalities emerge between designers. Besides all employing desperately skinny models, we’ve noticed other similarities between collections. Like white. It was everywhere on the runway this NYFW, in flowing dresses, in surprising suiting — and in inexplicable hat/dress combos (we’re looking at you, Prabal Gurung). Check out our gallery of the best white runway looks.
Can you imagine being this model? You show up at the Asher Levine show ready to show the world your incredible cheekbones, you watch all the other models get outfitted with cool sci-fi hats and belted trenchcoats, and then the stylist comes up to you with this giant eye-less lizard mask and is like, “Uummm, yeah, so you’re going to be wearing this.” That’s gotta sting.
