Will There Be Picket Lines At NY Fashion Week?

Drama may ensue during New York’s upcoming fashion week. Because the IMG Fashion event changed venues this year from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, a contractual mess has occurred between IMG and Lincoln Center’s theatrical labor employee union, which is normally granted work contracts to oversee events on the entire campus. Reports the Wall Street Journal, “Certain events occurring under the umbrella of New York Fashion Week will take place in Lincoln Center facilities that require the use of union labor, and those events will comply with the lease terms of those facilities, according to a person familiar with the matter”; however, there is a slight disagreement because some of the tents will be erected on the plaza (outside) and not in Lincoln Center’s buildings, which may allow IMG to hire others to help oversee and produce the event. The union wants to be the sole labor provider for NY Fashion Week, and if an agreement is not reached, they are considering a protest complete with leafleting and picket lines. Drama! Let’s hope this gets worked out quickly as the week’s September 9 start is just around the corner. [Wall Street Journal] Keep reading »

Plus-Size Runway Show Coming To New York Fashion Week

Big news for the world of high fashion: OneStopPlus.com, an online retailer of plus-size fashions, is going to present the first ever plus-size runway show during New York’s Fall Fashion Week. Though the show is not directly aligned with IMG Fashion Week, it will take place in one of the buildings at Lincoln Center, where NYFW is being held. Participating designers include Avenue, Jessica London, Women Within, Ellos and La Redoute, while Lizzie Miller (who made headlines as a nude model in Glamour) and Toccara Jones (from “America’s Next Top Model”) will be among the models strutting their stuff. Diana Eng’s Glowing LED Garments Illuminate The Runway

The Atlantic website just posted this beautiful video from Diana Eng‘s fashion show at last February’s New York Fashion Week. You may remember Eng as the technology-obsessed designer from the second season of “Project Runway.” Now she’s known (at least according to Wikipedia) for having popularized the term “fashion nerd.” Her collection featured garments outfitted with microphones, LED lights, and interactive components: “Off the runway, the dress’ microphones can pick up sounds from the wearer’s voice: when she speaks, she lights up in true diva style.” While we’ve certainly covered the intersection of fashion and technology here before, it’s not always this beautiful. See New York Fashion Week From Model Lindsey Wixson’s POV

What’s Fashion Week like when you’re one of the industry’s hottest young models? Photographer Gabrielle Revere followed Lindsey Wixson, a 5-foot-10 15-year-old from Wichita, KS, who also happens to be the face of Miu Miu, as she traveled from castings to fittings to hair and makeup to the runway during last month’s New York Fashion Week. Watch how she inspired one of Jason Wu’s dresses, encouraged Agyness Deyn to get up after a runway spill, and stopped at Starbucks for a snack. And because the photo essay was shot for LIFE, rather than an ad campaign or glossy mag, everything you see is real, meaning no wonky Photoshopping. [LIFE] Keep reading »
