Holiday Hair Tutorial: Disco Heaven

The internet is teeming with hair tutorials for ladies with long hair, but if you have short or curly (or short and curly) hair, it can be tough to find styles that will work for you. We asked hair and beauty guru Aileen Cady to come up with a fun party hairstyle specifically for short, curly hair, and she gave us Disco Heaven: a fun, retro look perfect for pairing with glittery gold eyeshadow and dancing the night away on New Year’s Eve. It’s never too early to start planning your New Year’s Eve outfit! I’m all about this festive top with sequins and glittery details that’s exclusively on OldNavy.com. With three different color choices, you can find the one that goes with your current crop of cardigans best! It’ll look adorable with jeans or a miniskirt and it’s not hella cleavage-revealing, either. I might just buy it in pink and recycle my outfit on Valentine’s Day. Shh, don’t tell anyone. The bloating of Thanksgiving and the bloodshed of Black Friday are behind us, and now Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s celebrations are ahead of us. It’s the most joyous time of the year, right? You’re ridiculously happy and emotionally stable right now, aren’t you? Not so much? Yeah, me neither. For one thing, we’re down to about three hours of cold, gray daylight every day. Seriously, yesterday I thought I’d pop out for a walk at the reasonable time of 3:45, but it was already so dark I would have needed one of those spelunking headlamps to safely navigate my neighborhood streets. At the risk of sounding like an emo poem I wrote in 7th grade, constant darkness outside is enough to make me feel constantly dark inside.

Whether it’s family drama, bad weather, relationship problems, financial issues, cabin fever, or some crappy combination of all of the above, a lot of people I know are having a rough time right now. How can you navigate the hyper-joyful holiday seasons when you’re not feeling so merry yourself? Well, here are 8 things to try… Keep reading »

A few years ago my friend Katelyn and I started our own New Year’s Eve tradition. We stay in, make dinner, drink wine, and spend the night reflecting on the last year and making up fun hippie rituals to usher in the new one (I hear this year’s festivities are going to include a ceramic chalice). Laid back NYE celebrations like mine might not require sequins or high heels, but they do require cute, comfortable basics, and slippers sturdy enough to pop out to the store for more wine if necessary. Not that I saw that terrible looking movie “New Year’s Eve” — I’m waiting for it to be on DVD, obvs — but there was a line from the trailer that I found to be quite on point. “New Year’s is the worst holiday to go out on,” says Ashton Kutcher’s sure-to-be-douche-y character. “People who don’t drink, don’t party all year, suddenly going all Kanye on you.” And it’s true. At least the (fake) New Year’s Party invite above is honest about what you can expect from your average overhyped, big-budget, overcrowded New Year’s shindig. [Buzzfeed]

Well isn’t this adorkable? Oh crap, I just remembered we hate that word. Fine. Let me start over. Isn’t this lovely? Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, back together again, this time covering Nancy Wilson’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” Julie would absolutely hate me for saying this, but luckily she is on a plane to Mexico right now, so here it goes: I really kind of wish Zooey and JGL would give romance a shot in real life. I like them together. By the way, if any of you send this post to Julie, I’ll know.

So this reminds me — what the heck are you doing for New Year’s Eve, Frisky readers? So far, I have no plans. I am either going to Rhode Island to hang out with someone very tall, chilling out on my couch with someone very furry, or doing something in between, like drinking champagne straight from the bottle on a street corner in Brooklyn. What are YOUR New Year’s Eve plans?

New Year’s Eve Style Inspiration #1: The Human Disco Ball

New Year’s Eve means a lot of things: reflection, rebirth, resolutions, parties, flirting, champagne singing, and perhaps most importantly, SEQUINS. Add a little festive sparkle to your outfit this weekend with one or two sequined accessories, amp things up with a pair of sequined heels, steal the show in a sequined dress, or channel your inner disco ball and wear them all at once. Call me a Grinch, but I’ve never really celebrated New Year’s Eve. It’s freezing cold, it’s all about drinking (which means other people barfing and fighting), it involves staying up until the wee hours of the morning, and sometimes your crazy-ass friends expect you to shell out $250 for some stupid club. No thanks! I usually stay home on New Year’s Eve or briefly attend whatever party is closest to my place.

I suspect I’m not the only homebody out there, though, because now is the time of year when I hear people bitching about how ritzy New Year’s Eve plans (usually planned by someone else!) are making them go broke. In the spirit of not starting off 2012 with credit card debt, here’s some tips on how to plan your own low-key New Year’s Eve party that doesn’t suck: Keep reading »

New Year’s Eve is completely overwrought with expectation, isn’t it?  Will your party be hip-hop-video-caliber awesome? Who are you going to kiss? And most importantly, are you wearing enough sequins?

It’s enough to make a girl throw up her hands and stay in watching re-runs of “Breaking Bad.”

Never fear, friend.  We’ve got seven ideas for totally different ways to ring in 2012. Keep reading »
