Jason Wu's Guerrilla Ad Campaign

If you happen to see some photos of seriously refined, flawlessly groomed women in ladylike ’50s-style dresses thrown up on buildings and street signs around Manhattan, don’t be alarmed — it’s just Jason Wu’s latest ad campaign. The designer will forgo the traditional direction in favor of going guerrilla with his spring 2012 collection. Photographed by Willy Vanderperre, “wild postings” of ads like the one shown above are set to occur in our fair city. I love the idea of an artsier, more spontaneous take on marketing, and it’s a foolproof way to grab everyone’s attention. It reminds me of Alexander Wang’s similar guerrilla campaign back in July — I suppose great minds, and great designers, think alike. [Racked NY]

Hands Off! Alleged Subway Groper Gets Shot By Cop

It’s been rough going for men who grope women and girls on public transit. Last month, some creep on the New York City subway got the crap beaten out of him by college student Shayne DeJesus, who filmed the incident with her phone, and was ratted out to the po-po by his brother. And on Friday, an off-duty cop shot a 22-year-old man who allegedly groped an 18-year-old and a 13-year-old. Keep reading »

Last week, we were kvelling about Shyane DeJesus, a 22-year-old college student in New York City who fought back when she was groped by a man while waiting for a subway. And she didn’t let the guy who lifted up her dress and slid his hand under her skirt get away when a train arrived: she followed him on the train, punched and kicked him, and shoved her Blackberry in his face to snap pictures. “I’m glad I fought back. I’m going to defend myself,” she told the New York Post. “I want him on the list for sex offenders.”

Well, it seems like Shyane DeJesus might just get her wish. The alleged subway groper, Froylan Andrade, 39, was arrested on Sunday after he was turned in by his brother. Keep reading »

True Life Occupy Wall St

Brace yourself, folks:  ”True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street” will air tonight on MTV and here’s what the New York Times has to say about it.

“[The show portrays] the scene in Zuccotti Park as summer camp with protest signs, a rolling festival of exasperation and naïveté, stone-faced cops and Hacky Sack—Fuming Man.”

Hmm. That doesn’t sound too positive.

Today’s Lady News: Woman Opens A Can Of Whoop-Ass On Subway Pervert

Today's Lady News
  • Shyane DeJesus, 22, a senior at City College in New York City, was waiting for the subway when she felt a man grope  her on the thigh and then shove his hand under her skirt. So Shyane started beating him about the head; when the subway arrived, the man jumped on it, and she followed him inside, where she kept punching him. He tried to get off at the next stop, so grabbed her Blackberry to snap pictures of his face to give to the cops. The guy is still on the loose, but maybe he’ll think twice about sexually assaulting another woman.  ”I’m glad I fought back. I’m going to defend myself,” she told the New York Post. “I want him on the list for sex offenders.” Girl, I am so proud of you! [NY Post] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: NYPD Officer Being Investigated For Unsolved Rapes

  • Last week, New York City police officer officer Michael Pena was charged with allegedly grabbing a 25-year-old woman off the street, flashing his gun, and raping her in her yard. Pena was caught, literally with his pants down, when a neighbor saw the sexual assault from her window and called 911. Now the NYPD is investigating several other unsolved rape cases and seeing if his DNA matches any that was retrieved from a rape kit in those other incidents. The police commissioner would not comment on the specific reasons certain cases were being examined. However, another NYPD official indicated that a stranger rape on the street is relatively uncommon — most rapes are committed by individuals who know each other — so those may be the types of cases the police department is examining. Regardless, it’s very unnerving a cop allegedly did this. [New York Times]
