We’re Madly Jealous Of Feminist Summer Camp For High School Girls

feminist summer camp

Summer camp is the quintessential summer experience for many, but at this Manhattan-based camp, there isn’t a campfire or s’more in sight. This is Feminist Camp.

Created by Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner, the co-authors of Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future, Feminist Camp aims to teach girls what being a feminist really means. Young women can expect to “hone their leadership skills, meet inspiring activists, and tackle the real issues that impact their lives.” Sounds rad! Keep reading »

plus size woman's body

This weekend I was riding the A train, as I do nearly every day, and I received the first stranger comment about my weight in a long time. He had been sitting next to me for several stops and was talking to another girl with a stuffed Nintendo Mario character backpack near us, clearly trying to pick her up. I suspected he was drunk. I kept reading my book and said, “Excuse me,” as I walked past him when we got to my stop.

He loudly said to my back, “You should go on a diet,” as I was getting off the train. I had a pause waiting for the doors to open. Usually I ignore these kinds of things, but this time I turned to the 20-something white dude, looked him dead in the eye and said, “My body is none of your business, nor is anyone else’s.”

He started to rebut as I got off the train. I just kept going. I realized as I was walking away I said that not so much to change his mind but for the benefit of anyone else listening that might think it’s okay to talk about someone else’s body. Keep reading »

On Monday in New York City, thousands of people marched in honor of Mark Carson, a 32-year-old man who was shot to death this weekend for being gay.  Protesters, which included the openly gay City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, shouted, “We’re here. We’re queer. Homophobia has got to go!”

Yet across town, hate crime violence persisted: more men were attacked in NYC because of their sexual orientation that same evening.  Keep reading »

Mark Carson, a 32-year-old gay man, was murdered on Friday night in a hate crime that has rocked New York City’s famously gay-friendly West Village.

Carson was shot in the head with a .38-caliber revolver by ex-con Elliot Morales, 33, who yelled numerous gay slurs before the shooting. He’s been charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to NY1, and is being held without bail.  Keep reading »

sybil jason nicolas almonte case

Last Thursday, Frisky staffers noticed the sound of a police helicopter hovering above midtown Manhattan for what felt like at least an hour. We had no idea what they helicopter was looking for – until later that evening, when New York news reported on the manhunt for Nicolas Almonte, a Queens man who had walked off his job Thursday morning, carjacked three different people at gunpoint, robbed another man and attempted to rob two others at gun point. After crashing his third carjacked vehicle — a gold Mercedes —Almonte broke into the basement of 27-year-old Brooklyn resident Sybil Jason’s apartment building. Sybil just-so-happens to also be a friend of mine.

What follows is Sybil’s first-hand account of what happened next:

groping

Oh, FFS, America. Last year, New York City was captivated by the tale of the good-looking, really well-dressed, white man — totally the kind of guy who want to bring home to your bubbe — who was sexually assaulting women in public. The man the tabloids called the “Gentleman Groper” was later fingered as a lawyer named Paul Kraft, who plead guilty to groping or taking crotch shots of numerous women in wealthy neighborhoods like the Upper East Side or the Financial District. Here are some creepy examples of stuff he did. Gross, right? Well, you’ll be … surprised … to hear he’s gotten off without jail time. Keep reading »
