Today’s Lady News: “Sex And The City” Star Speaks Out For Abortion Rights

  • “Sex and the City”‘s Cynthia Nixon is speaking out for abortion rights in light of the restrictive Stupak-Pitts Amendment in the House health care reform bill and the Nelson-Hatch Amendment in the Senate’s bill. Nixon recently told CNN.com: “My mother had an illegal abortion pre-1973, and it’s something that I would never want to face or want my daughter to be facing or any of her friends. Abortion is a right I feel must not go away, and I feel like people aren’t mobilizing so much because it’s so complicated and it’s difficult to understand.” [CNN]

Senators Introduce Anti-Abortion Amendment For Health Care Reform Bill

The House of Representatives’ version of the health care reform bill contained the Stupak-Pitts Amendment (explained in full here) to make sure health insurance doesn’t cover abortion.

Today, the Senate began their own campaign for a similar amendment, when Senators Bill Nelson (D-NE), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and others introduced an amendment to its version of the health care reform bill. Just like Stupak-Pitts, the Nelson-Hatch amendment will restrict federal subsidies for health insurance from being used for private health insurance plans that cover abortion. Keep reading »
