Sunday nights I have a ritual. I cook a kick ass dinner, I smoke some weed and I watch “Cosmos” high. The show is incredible all on its own, but man, it is mind-blowing when you’re stoned. The visuals are even more wondrous and the expansiveness of the universe is, like, extra, extra expansive and crazy and WHOA. But what if host Neil deGrasse Tyson took a few bong rips before jetting of in his Spaceship of the Imagination” to show us how ”fucking rad space is”? It might look something like this. [TIME]

I didn’t think it was possible for me to love Neil deGrasse Tyson more than I already do, but then the “Cosmos”‘ host went dropped some real talk in a discussion about whether genetics — specifically difference between the sexes — is to blame for there being so few women in STEM fields. “I’ve never been female. But I have been black my whole life,” he begins, before drawing parallels between the ways societal forces have long created barriers based on race and gender that have prevented equal opportunity. This is just perfect. [The Mary Sue]

Last week, some baby genius with a bit of time on their hands slowed down a video of American astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson talking so that he sounded, well, baked. The host of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” enjoyed the video so much (you can watch it after the jump) that he showed it to a full audience at a speaking engagement in Toronto this weekend. Coincidentally, last night’s episode of “Cosmos” (my current reason for living) saw Tyson revealing that some of science’s most renowned thinkers enjoyed marijuana, which I read as an enthusiastic recommendation that viewers smoke more weed. Whatever you say, Neil, you’re the boss. Check out the original “Neil deGrasse Tyson stoned” video after the jump! [Gawker] Keep reading »

16 Mind-Blowing Quotes From "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" (So Far)

“Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” Neil deGrasse Tyson’s reboot of Carl Sagan’s 1980s’ television documentary series, “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage,” is, so far, one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring shows I’ve ever watched. (Seriously, watching it I was more excited and moved than this little girl.) Jetting around in Tyson’s “Ship of the Imagination” — “free from the shackles of space and time” — “Cosmos” explores the origins of the universe and life itself, explained in a way that is both comprehensible and absolutely mind-blowing, alongside visuals that stun. As Tyson has said, “The universe is in us … Many people look up at the sky and they feel small. But I feel big. Because my atoms came from those stars.” Click on for just 15 of the most profound quotes from “Cosmos” first two episodes and then actually watch them in full on Hulu. You won’t regret it. I haven’t seen “Gravity” yet, but I’m eager to, as I love movies about space and the reviews have, for the most part, been really, really good. But one person wasn’t necessarily so impressed with the accuracy of Alfonso Cuaron’s cinematic vision — renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson tweeted up a storm after seeing the film last night, hilariously pointing out some of the movie’s flaws from a, you know, scientific perspective. See some of my favorites (beware of potential spoilers!) after the jump! Keep reading »
