Artist Max Steiner creates these teeny tiny cinder blocks the old fashioned way: by pouring the cement and letting it set for one month. The end result? A 3/4 inch cement pendant that’s incredibly strong and surprisingly delicate, strung onto a long silver chain. I’d love to layer this industrial necklace with a few strands of pearls and other feminine accessories. Perfect contrast piece. [$64, Shana Logic]

Religious symbols are not usually my thing, but when it comes to denominational jewelry, I’m all in. I may have had a bat mitzvah, but I still love to drape myself in all manners of Jesus paraphernalia, particularly rosaries. Plastic rosaries. They’re cheap, colorful, irreverent, and more than a little bit disrespectful, which is kind of the name of my game. But then there’s my Catholic grandmother, who clutches at her heart when she sees the casual way I wind crucifix jewelry around my neck, and on the other hand, my Jewish father, who shakes his head and tells me I’m going to hell. He’s totally wrong, by the way, because Jews don’t believe in hell. Ha! These plastic “Jewish rosaries” are delightful because they’re cheeky and celebratory (l’chaim!), whereas the original has some, uh, darker connotations. Plus, they make the whole mixed family happy — what could be better? They are exponentially more expensive than the dime-a-dozen Catholic variety, but hey, that’s Judaism for ya. An Easy Way To Wear Your Birth Month Bloom

How gorgeous are these birth month flower necklaces? Each one is handmade in Nashville, Tennessee, and feature actual dried flowers pressed in a resin pendant. I didn’t even know there were flowers corresponding to months, but apparently as a May baby my flower is lily of the valley (as seen in the blue necklace in the middle), which is lovely and poisonous. Whatever. I’ll take it. [$48, Uncommon Goods]

5 New Places To Hang Your Necklaces

I’m something of a necklace fiend, and all my prized possessions are currently hanging on a few nails in my bedroom. I actually like the simplicity of this setup, but I’m trying not to put any more holes in the wall and I’m always open to new organizing ideas, so I scoured the internet for alternative necklace displays. Here are five that are easy, original, and aesthetically pleasing. Check ‘em out, and then tell us in the comments — where do you hang your necklaces?

Etsy Spotlight: Lace Necklaces

Lace is showing up everywhere right now — dresses, tights, gloves, skirts — but I’m especially loving the way it’s being used in necklaces. The look of a dainty piece of lace skimming the collarbone is so striking and feminine. Here are 10 lace necklaces handmade by Etsy artists, and trust me: they’ll look equally gorgeous with a little black dress or a little black T-shirt.

Shopping Guide: 11 Powerful Crystal & Stone Necklaces (Plus, What They Mean!)

You might not know this about me, but I’m a little bit into crystals. At the beginning of the year, I bought a green aventurine stone, and I never take it off. I suppose these things are only as meaningful as you allow them to be, but in my case, my aventurine crystal—which is meant to provide a “heart’s new growth.” Also: “Removes hurts of the heart and encourages new, healthy growth. Balances male/female energies. Amplifies leadership qualities. Provides courage through love.—seems to really do the trick. And let’s face it, having a little crystal power couldn’t hurt. One thing to know about crystals—if you’re really putting your energy into them, you shouldn’t let other people touch them and muck up your energy with them. If someone does touch your crystal, you can place it in a clear glass of water and sea salt on a windowsill, and allow it to soak in the sun’s rays. See, I told you I’m into this stuff. After the jump, a selection of lovely mineral and stone crystal jewelry, and what the stones can bring you. Keep reading »

Shopping Guide: Long & Lovely Necklaces

Long necklaces are a magical part of the jewelry kingdom. They’re great for layering with other necklaces, look striking on their own, and — fun fact! — the long vertical line they create can actually have a slimming effect. Add one to a little black dress, for example, and oh man will you look like a tall drink of water. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites that measure at least 24″ long and cost less than $50. Click through to check them out, and remember, contrary to what some stores would have you believe, a necklace is not a shirt.
