For once, controversial supermodel Naomi Campbell is making headlines for something other than cell phone beatdowns. I don’t know how long she’s been involved in charity work (maybe it’s been overshadowed by her more notorious exploits), but evidently she visits Africa often and is the global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance, an international coalition for maternal health, which is holding its annual general meeting in Tanzania, where a woman dies in childbirth every hour. To raise money, she helped organize the Fashion for Relief charity featuring local designers, and gave a talk from the runway, which she used as a platform for another cause as well:

“Where do we see a woman of color in an advert? It’s quite blatant. There’s definitely space for more black models but has there been enough effort? It was getting better but it’s slipped back this year. Women of color who have had a great experience in life need to share their experiences with others. The world is not made up of blonde hair and blue eyes. We need to share ourselves.”

Maybe she hired some spin doctors to fix up her image, but we like this new direction for Naomi, as crusader of change for the fashion industry and doing important charity work. Hey, it worked for Angelina. [Daily Mail]

Naomi Campbell has continued to work as a supermodel despite being 39, but even though she’s been able to defy fashion industry norms, she says black and other models of color are having a tough time in the recession. “This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced,” she told The Telegraph. “I don’t see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns.” Naomi says Italian Vogue‘s Black Issue last summer “made some noise,” but didn’t actually cause any changes in how often minority models are booked. “People, in the panic of the recession, don’t dare to put a girl of colour in their campaign, full stop,” she added. “Nor of any other race. It’s a shame. It’s very sad.”

Naomi has been in the fashion biz for a loooong time, so she’s seen a lot, but is she just talking out of her butt with this attack? I mean, black, Hispanic, and Asian models have always taken a back seat to white models, so what’s so different during the recession?

To promote the release of the latest additions to D&G’s Anthology fragrance line, the designers have released a series of sexy ads featuring the original supermodels stripping off their clothes: Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, and Eva Herzigova, among others. With George Michael’s “Freedom” blaring in the background, it’s the ‘90s all over again! Schiffer does 18 La Lune (for The Dreamer), Naomi does 3 L’Imperatrice (for The Star), and Eva does 10 La Roue de la Fortune (for The Player) with Fernando Fernandes. Twiggy has just been tapped to be the face of Oil of Olay, again. Back in 1985 she was the star of their commercials and now she’ll be bringing the glamor back for their Definity ad campaign. Of her new gig the model said, “I am delighted to be fronting the new advertising campaign because as a women who is nearly 60, I am a strong believer in using trusted brands like Olay, that are clinically proven to meet the needs of more mature skin.”

It’s nice to see a familiar face, not to mention an adult one.  In an age where models seem to be getting younger and younger, Twiggy is part of a trend of talented women breaking through the ageist industry and proving they’re as sexy and as valued as ever! And these confident supermodels, who are not teenagers anymore, are beating the odds of a highly critical, looks based business. Thanks to the women in this slideshow, true beauty is something we all can achieve at every age.

Do you swear to tell the truth, avoid neon colors, and not wear sunglasses as headbands, so help you God? In a courthouse, there is a legal oath as well as a fashion oath. Few people would repeat [Michael Jackson’s pajama-clad court appearance faux pas, but many overlook the less obvious style no-no’s in a courtroom. Whether you’re in the jury box, testifying, or, heaven forbid, the defendant, there are certain rules everyone should follow in front of the (fashion) judge.

If you haven’t heard already, the July issue of Italian Vogue was unprecedented. All the models in it were black. Amidst the buzz that followed, the much-hyped “Black Issue” became such a popular success that distribution was increased by 40-percent, an amazing feat. Some (including me) saw the concept—race as an “issue”—as a gimmick, an attempt to shush critics who frequently point out how little page-time the fashion industry gives to anything other than white faces. But, without a doubt, the issue got people talking about the issues. Now, let’s hope their attention isn’t squandered.

Naomi Campbell, who has been dating a Brazilian businessman, was rushed into surgery in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday. The Afro-Jamaican-Chinese model, whose vajayjay has been seen everywhere from Playboy to Madonna’s Sex book, allegedly needed to have a small ovarian cyst removed. Naomi’s publicist released a statement on her behalf, “Following the successful procedure, she is now resting and is looking forward to getting back to work. She would like to thank the doctors who have kindly looked after her.”  Her medical staff included gynecologist Dr. Jose Aristodemo Pinotti and Dr. David Uip, a leading expert in the treatment of infectious diseases who you know was just hanging around to sneak a peak at the promise land. Although she may not be able to get good help at home (how many cellphones does she need to throw to get a cup of coffee???), we’re glad to hear that she is getting the health care she needs.
