It seems like no corner of the beauty industry will be left unturned when it comes to finding ways to market to men. The newest beauty trend for guys? The MANicure. Yes, despite the fact that there’s absolutely nothing inherently gendered in nail polish colors, several companies have developed “man-friendly” polishes. A company annoyingly named Alphanail, for instance, claims that its line of fugly colors is “designed by men. Worn by warriors.” Oh, warriors, you say?

I’m slightly baffled as to why Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond Chandler would take to Facebook, of all places, for input on changes to the Army grooming standards. Maybe he thought his Facebook pals were the best people to solicit advice on the Army’s consideration of a ban on French manicures, earrings and ponytails? Keep reading »
When the seasons change, I like to be prepared. I tend to start stocking up on potential fall nail polish shades by, say, mid-August. Of course, I already know which colors I’ll be wearing because they’re the same ones I go for every year — rich, autumnal reds, neutral nudes and taupes and muted shades of true blues and greens. Now that it’s October, it’s safe to say that normal people who are not hoarders like myself can now assuredly begin to make their selections for the latter seasons. Here are my top 10 picks for fall and winter nail polish. Click to buy after the jump! Keep reading »
Can’t afford a Chanel bag? That’s okay, just wear the brand on your nails instead. Chanel’s just revealed three of its new colors for spring 2012–titled April, May and June. Perfectly fruit punchy, wouldn’t you say? [Fashionista]
Speaking of “The Muppets,” Kermit the Frog and Fozzie the Bear don’t necessary conjure thoughts of slick manicures and pedicures, but don’t tell OPI that. They’ve launched a collection of 12 new colors in conjunction with the upcoming “Muppets” movie, several of which feature over-the-top sparkles and all of which include radical Muppet-y names. Want one of the more subdued shades? Try Animal-istic, Meep Meep Meep, Wocka Wocka, Pepes Purple Passion, Designers De Better or Warm and Fozzie. For more outrageous, sparkly shades, go for Rainbow Connection, Excuse Moi, Gone Gonzo, Fresh Frog of Bel Air, Divine Swine, or Gettin Miss Piggy With It. But patience, Kermie! You won’t be able to get your paws — or hooves — on these shades until November. For now, you’ll simply have to approximate Miss Piggy Pink yourself. [OPI] Keep reading »
Two of my guilty pleasures: pretty personal style blogs and nail polish. Often these two things go together, as I end up discovering nail polish shades I might not have considered upon the manicured hands of chic ladies whose looks I covet. Case in point: for the last few weeks, I have been trying to find a nail salon that carries this exact shade of hot pink after seeing it on one of my favorite style blogs, Could I Have That? Thus far, I have been bitterly disappointed because apparently it was discontinued. Luckily, I have been able to find it on the web, so I’m just gonna bite the bullet and buy a bottle for myself. Uh, please save one for me, okay?

It’s been years since I’ve fallen in love with a pink nail lacquer. I usually prefer variations of gray, which are season-less, or some sort of red, which a friend says has become my signature. But I was curious about the new, limited-edition Nice Stems! by OPI collection of shades of pink, from pale frosty pink to rich fuchsia. I was initially drawn to “I Lily Love You,” because who doesn’t love a tint of pink with flecks of glitter? But last week, I wanted something new, so I tried “Play the Peonies,” a soft, frosty pink from the same collection. And what do you know? I fell in love. Keep reading »
OPI’s recently released “Shatter” nail polishes are the new black in the world of manicures. Our initial encounter with them was less than moving. At first we thought, Won’t it just look like my polish is peeling off? But the salesperson explained that applying Shatter over two coats of regular nail polish would give a crackling effect you can see in seconds. Our next thought: You mean every nail is different? Too OCD for that!
Shatter, obviously trying to win us over, began to show up everywhere. Unable to ignore it any longer, we tried it and the crackly manicure grew on us. Now we love the Shattercure. And apparently we’re not the only ones, because it’s sold out everywhere. Keep reading »
Never in my life did I think the words “David Lynch” and “nail polish” would end up in the same post, but there you go: here we’ve got some “Twin Peaks” nail art. Whatever screwed up, Lynch-ian things you choose to do with these nails is your business. [Flavorwire] Keep reading »
