Happy Christmas Eve! I fell down an insane nail art rabbit hole and have emerged covered in tinsel, Christmas lights, and gilded snowflakes. People are serious about their nail art, especially around the holidays. Click through for 20 insanely festive Christmas-themed manicures.
I love having a manicure, but get bored at the nail salon, so I was thrilled about Red Carpet Manicure’s new At-Home Gel Manicure line. The line, which includes a LED light to help set your gel polish, gives you everything you need to do your own gel manicures at home. Why bother with gels? They last much longer — up to two weeks — and won’t chip and crack like regular manicures. Buying everything you’d need to do it at home will cost around $80, which is equal to about three salon gel manicures, so it’s totally worth it. Plus, Red Carpet already has more than 20 great colors, with more coming this winter! Gel on!
How much does “Twilight” star Nikki Reed love her fiance, “American Idol” also-ran Paul McDonald? Enough to put his visage on her fingernails. All of them. She wore his face on her fingers to this past weekend’s Teen Choice Awards. I imagine that she meant as a sweet gesture, but somehow, it seems kind of creepy. Like, what if she picks her nose with her fiance’s face? Or unwedges her underwear from her butt with two Paul McDonald-clad fingers? Paul McDonald, did you put her up to this? Or are you two just really crazily obsessively that much in love with each other? I mean, most people just put pictures of their significant others on their phones, guys. [Celebuzz] Keep reading »
Two of my guilty pleasures: pretty personal style blogs and nail polish. Often these two things go together, as I end up discovering nail polish shades I might not have considered upon the manicured hands of chic ladies whose looks I covet. Case in point: for the last few weeks, I have been trying to find a nail salon that carries this exact shade of hot pink after seeing it on one of my favorite style blogs, Could I Have That? Thus far, I have been bitterly disappointed because apparently it was discontinued. Luckily, I have been able to find it on the web, so I’m just gonna bite the bullet and buy a bottle for myself. Uh, please save one for me, okay?
Manicures and nail decals are so over. Enter the next big thing: Nail tattoos. Our Philadelphia buddy Jacci, who runs the blog Being Perfect is Hard, hit upon the idea and met up with a local tattoo artist friend recently to get her nails tattooed. She drew a variety of cute and quirky designs and had them tattooed directly on her fingernails. “I chose a bunch of my favorite things which include Bart Simpson heads, a Wu Tang symbol, a Chanel logo, a diamond, an eye, a pizza slice, a smiley face, a dollar sign and a heart.” But did it hurt? No, says Jacci, who also explained that the art is semi-permanent, as in, it’ll last only until your nails grow out, so if you get bored, you can simply paint over the designs. The tattoo process itself took around 35-40 minutes for all 10 nails, and cost Jacci around $60. And this is why Philly girls rule so much. [Being Perfect Is Hard] Keep reading »
Need a quick nail pick-me-up? Then head to your nearest Sephora, because soon the cosmetics giant will offer manicures and nail art, via a partnership with XpresSpa, the company that offers quickie manis and pedis in airports. Called Sephora Nail Studio Art+Lacquer Services, the first of the franchises will open up on July 25 in two NYC locations and at Sephora’s San Francisco Powell Street store, and will then be rolled out at select locations across the country. OPI’s recently released “Shatter” nail polishes are the new black in the world of manicures. Our initial encounter with them was less than moving. At first we thought, Won’t it just look like my polish is peeling off? But the salesperson explained that applying Shatter over two coats of regular nail polish would give a crackling effect you can see in seconds. Our next thought: You mean every nail is different? Too OCD for that!
Shatter, obviously trying to win us over, began to show up everywhere. Unable to ignore it any longer, we tried it and the crackly manicure grew on us. Now we love the Shattercure. And apparently we’re not the only ones, because it’s sold out everywhere. Keep reading »
You may tote a boa handbag or strut around in python pumps, but now your nails can get in on the reptile action. Nail artist Terri Silacci has created a gel manicure using snakeskin.
The Monterey, California-based manicurist tells the “Today” show that these scaly digits were inspired by snakeskin her son brought home from his science class.
“One snake’s trash is a toenail’s treasure,” says Silacci. “I find that the initial reaction from people is, that’s weird, that’s disgusting. And then they say, ‘I want it. And I want it right away.’” Keep reading »
