Katy Perry is still going through her blue period. The “Teenage Dream” pop star shared a while back that the inspiration for her blue hair was half Anna Wintour and half Kate Winslet in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” However it seems even more clear what Perry was going for with the gorgeous blue and purple ponytail she rocked at the 25th annual Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in Los Angeles this past weekend. Rebecca Hains, best be known these days as the woman who got busted by the TSA for trying to take a red velvet cupcake through airport security, is, in her real life a media studies professor at Salem State University and author of Growing Up With Girl Power; Girlhood on Screen and in Every Day Life. She is also mother to a little boy who loves “My Little Pony,” a show, Rebecca says on her blog, that, like the beloved Powerpuff Girls, appeals equally to both sexes, defying the notion that boys/men won’t watch stories about girls/women.
I have to admit I’m not a “My Little Pony” aficianado — my daughter was never into them and I recalled the old show as being inane, and largely about selling toys (the fact that the ponies were revived for the Hub, a TV station owned by Hasbro, and are skinnier and “prettier” in their new incarnation only reinforced those impressions). Creator Lauren Faust writes on the Ms. Magazine blog that she was not initially a fan, either:
[Shows based on girls’ toys] did not reflect the way I played … I assigned my ponies and my Strawberry Shortcake dolls distinctive personalities and sent them on epic adventures to save the world. On TV, though, I couldn’t tell one girl character from another and they just had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying – which miraculously inspired the villain to turn nice. I was losing sleep over the New York Times’ careless factual error on their article about college students with Aspergers who are navigating the perils of an intimate relationship. How dare they mix up two My Little Ponies? Not only do they have totally different personalities, but Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy look nothing alike. Fluttershy is yellow with a pink mane and Twilight Sparkle is a lavender unicorn with a pink and purple mane. The Times needs to get their act together or I am no longer going to be able to trust them as a journalistic institution. Thank God they caught this one. [Coke Talk]
Lauren Conrad has never really been my hair idol. Okay fine, I totally have tried to replicate that braid thingy she does—but other that than, I’ve always found her long, blonde locks a little safe. However, last week on her website TheBeautyDepartment.com, Lauren posted a photo of a woman with multi-colored streaks and asked readers whether she should go for it, too. They voted yes. When I was a kid, I begged my parents for months to get me a “Mothers The Pony.” They’d go to toy store after toy store, and no one would have any idea what they were talking about because I’d gotten the name wrong—I, of course, meant that I wanted a My Little Pony. Apparently, Bill Clinton knows more about the pastel ponies than I did. Over the weekend, Peter Sagal interviewed Bill on NPR. After asking some fun questions like, “What is more fun—being president or former president?” and “Did Hilary have to give you any lessons in standing to the side and gazing adoringly?,” Peter got to the segment of his show called “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me,” where he asks people questions about a topic they really shouldn’t know all that much about. We were unnerved by Strawberry Shortcake‘s updated look, and when we first saw an article about My Little Pony, we feared for the worst. What could they do to already unrealistic plastic ponies? Thankfully, it seems that our favorite horses are not getting a makeover, but that celebs are designing limited edition ponies. LeAnn Rimes, Deborah (Debbie) Gibson, graffiti artist/designer Claw Money, Japanese manga artist Junko Mizuno, and Spanish illustrator Catalina Estrada have all decorated 18-inch tall versions of the plastic horses, and they will be unveiled at a gallery event in New York City in September, when they’ll be auctioned.
