We’ve seen quite a few a capella videos lately, and many of them have been very impressive. However, this is definitely the first one to include the theme song from “Bill Nye the Science Guy” and Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Get ready for a nostalgia bomb, ’90s kids! [Buzzfeed]

Most dads–even the weird ones–have one thing in common: their taste in music. After being lectured about the underrated glory of certain bands and seeing them go crazy with their steering wheel drum solos while driving us to soccer practice, we feel we have a pretty good sense of the “Dad Music” genre, and we thought it was time to document it. Check out our Dad Music Field Guide, after the jump! Keep reading »

Colin Powell

Well, well, well. Look who it is. Colin Powell, former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, was on CBS  this morning and added himself to the pantheon of “Call Me Maybe” covers. Technically it’s not a cover — he just sings a few bars with Gayle King — but its still clear the man knows his Carly Rae Jepsen from his Demi Lovato. Who knew? [Popdust]

Hi, welcome to Camp Lady Gaga Is Boring And Pretentious, population 1 and it’s me. I recognize that I am all but vastly, utterly alone in thinking that this “Lady Gaga” character is one of the most stale, uninteresting “personalities” to have ever made her mark on pop culture. David Bowie, Grace Jones, Madonna Ciccone for Christ’s sake — they did it first, and better. It’s not her image I take issue with, it’s the severe, and I think unmistakable, dichotomy between her mask and her music. She’s so avant-garde! She has a lobster on her head! She’s in a meat dress! She’s in an egg! It’s like the womb! Edgy! Individual! Born this way! Lazy, insufferable ra-ra-ra bubblegum pop cribbed from “Express Yourself,” tossed into the mass media music machine! She’s making a perfume called “Fame” that will be a black liquid with “the feeling and sense” of blood and semen and a bottle heavily “inspired by” Thierry Mugler’s Alien. She snagged the upcoming cover of this year’s Vogue September issue. Tell me why, you guys! When is this person going to do something that’s real and unique? I’m not going to hold my breath, but can we please move past Stefani Germanotta? Bring me the next Britney! Whatever happened to the punk rock pop stars?

One of my favorite parts of the Celine Dion concert this weekend (besides ALL THE PARTS) was when Celine deviated from her usual song lineup and sang her own powerhouse version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Apparently one of my fellow concertgoers was secretly recording it — click on the video to listen for yourself! You’ll have to excuse me if I don’t know what to say about this Fiona Apple video for “Every Single Night,” the first song off her new album, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. Fiona is wearing an octopus on her head, writhing in the dirt with snails, and floating through assorted ethereal and weird scenarios. God only knows what it’s supposed to mean. Maybe nothing? Anyway, The Idler Wheel comes out June 19, but the entire album is up on NPR today for your listening pleasure. Snail-free, I should say.  [BuzzFeed]

I have a dark secret. Okay, it’s not actually that dark and as far as secrets go, it hasn’t been particularly well hidden, but still, here goes… This weekend, I am going to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion in concert. For the eighth time. I have an entire section of my closet dedicated to sparkly Celine concert dresses. My favorite nightgown is an ankle-length T-shirt with Celine’s face on it. “Queen Celine” is by far my most played Spotify playlist, albeit usually on the private setting. Yep, I’m a Celine Dion superfan, and I think it’s finally time to share my truth with the world. Keep reading »

The Ultimate Guide To Rock ‘N’ Roll

Former Frisky columnist Judy McGuire has exchanged her first love (dispensing hilarious dating advice) for her second (rock ‘n’ roll) with her new book, The Official Book of Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll Lists. But as the title promises, there’s plenty of salaciousness to go around. McGuire got plenty of music’s greatest — and greatest fans — to dish the dirt; Ozzy Osbourne dishes health tips, Coco (Ice-T’s wife) shares her advice for keeping your rapper happy, and Willie Nelson riffs on his area of expertise (smoking pot, of course). You’ll read it from cover to cover and then leave it somewhere easily accessible, as it’s always good for a laugh or inciting conversation. I mean, when don’t you need Snoop Dogg’s deepest thoughts on sex and relationships? [$16.20, Amazon]

Miss USA Call Me Maybe
Watch Video

“Call Me Maybe” is catchiest damn song of the summer, so it figures the Miss USA pageant did its very own cover. It is safe to say none of the contestants will take home the prize for lip synching, but there are a couple funny cameos by the hosts Bravo’s Andy Cohen and E!’s Giuliana Rancic. And (ick) Donald Trump, who owns the pageant (likely to scope out new wives).

By the way, Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo, a 20-year-old cellist, won the pageant. I’m not sure which one she is in the video … maybe one of the ones in bikinis? [YouTube]
