Get Your Rocks Off: The Heavy’s Playlist Of Songs For The Pissed And Broken-Hearted

This British soul band has been described as sounding “like Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Pusherman’ resurrecting Led Zeppelin and the exiled spirit of Cassius Clay” making it hard “not to fantasize about Pam Grier fighting off her pimp with a broken bottle.” Heavy, indeed. Their debut record, Great Vengeance & Furious Fire came out in the U.S. on April 8th and they launch on U.S. tour in May. But if you’re freaks for the HBO show Californication than The Heavy probably caught your ear when their song “That Kind Of Man” came blaring out of the stereo when David Duchovny’s character Hank Moody took a Porsche — and a Porsche sales rep — for a ride. Check out their list of songs for those times when love has really got you down. Keep reading »

Sex And The City And Fergie, A Good Combination?

A lot has changed since Sex and the City went off the air four years ago, including the show’s opening music. Written for the movie, “Labels & Love” is inspired by the original, lyric-less ditty and sung by Fergie. “It’s an entirely new song with lyrics, but it has the Sex and the City theme as the DNA — on steroids,” according to the movie’s director, Michael Patrick King. Give it a listen and tell us whether it’s your new favorite song. We think it sounds like it was put together in a hurry on Fergie’s home computer using Garage Band. [Greasy Guide] Keep reading »

Madonna’s Hard Candy Gets Leaked

A bunch of tracks from Madonna’s not-yet-released new album, Hard Candy, were leaked this weekend. What do you think of her latest effort? We think a lot of the tracks seem to be more of a Justin Timberlake/Timbaland show than a Madge-spectacular, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. [Oh No They Didn't] Keep reading »

Slideshow: Dynamic Music Duos

He Says/She Says: Usher’s “Love In This Club”

Usher is a five-time Grammy-winner, a partial owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a master of catchy songs and slick — maybe too slick — dance moves. My friend Geoff and I watch the video for his new song “Love In This Club” and try to figure out what’s going on. Videos can be so confusing.

Catherine: Let me guess, he’s in a club.
Geoff: It looks like the one strip club I’ve ever been to. I suppose most of them look the same, though. Keep reading »

Get Your Rocks Off: Nina Persson’s Heartbreak Hymns Playlist

Chances are, you probably remember Nina Persson as the angelic front woman for the band The Cardigans — remember their hit “Lovefool”? That was some goodness. Nowadays, Nina is still a member of The Cardigans (who released Super Extra Gravity last year), but she’s also got an amazing side project called A Camp, described as “a minimalist fusion of eclecticism and Americana.” A Camp’s self-titled debut record won four Swedish Grammys and Nina is hard at work on a follow-up. Hopefully this one, thanks to the loads of critical praise the last one received, will be available stateside (without having to pay for an import). In the meantime, the melancholy wonderment which makes Nina’s voice so special is also present in her list of “Top Ten Heartbreak Hymns.” Enjoy her picks, after the jump!

    Dealbreaker: Bad Music Taste

There are so many things involved in attraction. From clothing to chemistry, a never-ending list of items can be turn-offs. But sometimes differences are a turn-on, from magnets to men, you know what they say: opposites attract. Still, some things are so repellent, they’re dealbreakers.

When my friend introduced me to a man who was over a foot taller than me, pale as a sheet of paper with pitch black hair and black leather boots laced to his knees, I fell head over heels for this grown-up goth. I’m sure we looked like a bit of an odd couple, or the cast of a horror movie (me being the girl that would get killed first) but he was sweeter than the little pink dresses I wore. On our dates, he was so cute and surprisingly funny, all I could do was giggle and find ways to show off my cleavage.

    Yes, You Can!

Movies about real people are inspiring, but screenwriters and actors dilute their stories a bit by making them “Hollywood,” in my opinion. That’s why Young @ Heart is going to be amazing. It’s a documentary showing a real group of senior citizens who sing cool songs from Coldplay, The Clash, James Brown, and more. I have been waiting for this movie for months — the trailer gives me goose bumps. Luckily, it’s playing in theaters starting tomorrow. [Young @ Heart Chorus] Keep reading »
