Last night, a crazy, woman-hating man fired 52 shots into a ”Latin Impact” dance aerobics class at a LA Fitness health club outside of Pittsburgh. Three women were killed, and nine others were injured before the guy turned the gun on himself. George Sodini, 48, was a huge wack job. He had major beef with women and had been planning this murder for nine months on his website. On the site, he complained about having no control over his life, getting rejected by women, being a loner, failing at an earlier shooting attempt, and his problems with alcoholism. He even listed his death as August 4, 2009, the day the shooting happened.

On Monday, eight-months-pregnant Darlene Haynes of Massachusetts was found dead in her bedroom, her unborn baby cut from her womb. Amazingly, this tragic murder has a silver lining: Darlene’s baby girl has been found alive. Police found the baby with one of Darlene’s friends, Julie A. Corey, in New Hampshire yesterday. When some of Darlene’s friends heard about the grisly murder, they tipped off authorities that they had seen Corey shortly before, carrying around a newborn girl. Corey claimed she had recently given birth, “sometime” between July 23th and 24th, and couldn’t remember the name of the Massachusetts hospital where she’d had the baby. Corey is currently charged with being a fugitive from justice, but something tells me that in the end she’ll be charged with something much stronger. Police are currently investigating what happened in this heinous crime. The most important part is that Darlene’s baby girl is healthy and getting proper medical attention. [CNN] Keep reading »
Some really awful things have happened this week and, unfortunately, a huge percentage of them happened to women. We know you don’t exactly enjoy reading about this kind of stuff but, hey, it’s important. So here it goes.
- Okay, this story is really awful. A Massachusetts woman named Darlene Haynes, 23, was found dead in her closet after neighbors complained of a smell coming from her house. Worse still—the woman’s 8-month-old fetus had been cut out of her body. The baby could have survived, but would have needed medical attention ASAP. It looks like someone may have literally stolen her baby. Horrible. [CNN]

Professional boxer Arturo Gatti may have beat down the best, but over the weekend, his 23-year-old exotic dancer wife allegedly strangled him with her purse strap while he was sleeping at a swanky resort in Brazil. Gatti’s wife became a suspect after she claimed she didn’t notice her hubby was dead for ten hours, even though they were in a room together. Keep reading »
While the rest of her friends will be graduating from the University of Washington this weekend, 21-year-old Amanda Knox will go over her testimony given earlier today in Italy defending her innocence in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher. Kercher was found dead — stabbed in the neck and strangled — half naked in a pool of blood on November 1, 2007 in the house she and Knox shared while studying abroad, beginning the murder trial that continues to shake the little town of Perugia, Italy. Five months into a case that has so many missing pieces and piles of misinformation, Knox took the stand today facing life imprisonment, in hopes to finally clear her name. Unfortunately for Knox, charged with murder and sexual violence along with ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, that is going to be a very hard thing to do. Keep reading »
Last week I changed my relationship status on Facebook from “engaged” to “single”, since I had decided my break was now a breakup. Emma Forrester, a married woman in the U.K., changed her status to single too, only her husband responded by hacking her to death with a meat cleaver. Wayne Forrester told police he had been provoked by his wife changing her marital status on her Facebook entry, and had taken copious amounts of cocaine and alcohol before the murder. He’s been jailed for a minimum of 14 years. There’s really nothing I can say about this, because it’s insanely f–ked up. [Daily Mail U.K.] Keep reading »
When I was younger, I always thought hiding in folding couches was super stealth, but now I might be developing a foldout couch phobia. A woman in St. Petersburg, Russia, got in a fight with her drunken husband, and when he wouldn’t get off the couch, she hit a lever and it folded up, leaving him stuck between the mattress and the back of the couch. The woman walked out of the room, and when she came back three hours later, she thought he was sleeping quietly, only he was dead. [Reuters] Keep reading »
Suffice it to say, I’m not much for many traditions, including the one that says your intended fiance should ask your dad for permission to marry you (I just got engaged and while I thought it was sweet my bf…err, fiance…talked to my parents about his intentions after the fact, I am glad the only person’s permission he sought was mine). Subhash Chander, 57, of Oak Forest, Illinois might disagree with me on that. He allegedly set fire to the apartment building where his pregnant daughter, her husband, and their young child lived (killing all three) because the husband (who he didn’t approve of because he came from a different caste) didn’t get his permission to marry his daughter before they wed. If it turns out that he’s guilty, I am going to scream in outrage. What do you all make of this story? We’re anxious to hear your thoughts in the comments. [CNN via Feministing] Keep reading »
