The Most Memorable Moments From The 2014 MTV VMAs

Hey! So you probably noticed The Frisky was down all day. We seem to be up and running — FOR NOW!!!! — so I can finally bring you this hilariously late recap of last night’s MTV VMAs. I know, you forgot it happened already.

Without the promise of Miley Cyrus’s flapjacks twerking against Robin Thicke’s sleazy groin, last night’s MTV Video Music Awards had a lot to live up to. So how did it go? Well, there was a lot less tongue, thank god, much better twerking (thanks Nicki!), the Kardashians at their worst, and so, so, so much Beyonce. Here are the moments not to be missed from last night’s MTV VMAs.

Nicki Minaj had a lightening fast costume change in between performing her single “Anaconda” and her collab with Ariana Grande and Jessie J, “Bang Bang,” to open the show — but apparently she wasn’t zipped into her second dress correctly because she had to clutch the front together to prevent a wardrobe malfunction. Style Superlatives: The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards

Did y’all catch the MTV VMAs last night? It was quite a show, what with Blue Ivy showing up to steal the spotlight with just a few dance moves. But before I get to recapping the show, let’s review what Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and more wore by handing out some style superlatives…

Beyonce Just Stole The Show At The MTV VMAs — With A Little Help From Blue Ivy

Beyonce won the Video Vanguard Award at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards, but before she accepted her trophy, the Queen of Everything performed a 15 minute medly for the enraptured crowd. At one point, the world FEMINIST flashed behind her in big block letters — expect to see that moment immortalized as every 20-40something feminist’s Facebook cover photo for the next week. In the audience? Husband Jay Z, from whom she is rumored to be on the verge of splitting, and daughter Blue Ivy, who is so cute that there were a record number of reported exploding ovaries during the show. Jay and Blue also presented Bey with her award (see it after the jump), willfully toying with viewers’ emotions, specifically my emotions, because OMG THEY CANNNNNNNOT BREAK UP. What does it mean, you guys? If they’re about to split, why bother with the song and dance? Their tour is already sold out. Does this mean they aren’t breaking up and the rumors have all been BS and this kiss is a sign that true love lives on? Please help me process. Keep reading »

Join Us Tonight: The Frisky Is Live-Tweeting The MTV VMAs!

Join Us Tonight: The Frisky Is Live-Tweeting The VMAs

A short poem in honor of tonight’s Video Music Awards:

It ain’t hard to remember last year’s VMAs
So many “oh shit” moments happened up on that stage.
The Smith family watched slack-jawed and couldn’t not watch
When Miley stuck her ass all up in Robin Thicke’s crotch.
TSwift told Harry Styles to “Shut the fuck up”
And N’SYNC reunited as uncoordinated grownups.
Gaga danced in a thong and Macklemore was legit,
And we somehow made it through the night without seeing one tit.
But the best part of all was The Frisky’s live tweets
So we’re doing it again and you better be there, bitches.

… I didn’t feel like rhyming anymore. Keep reading »

One Of Miley Cyrus’s Dancing Bears Speaks Out About The Performance That Made Her Feel “Less Than Human”

I was in Miley Cyrus’ 2013 VMA performance as one of the background bears. I had never done anything in a costume with a mask like that before. I mean, I dressed up as a Pink Power Ranger when I was in Kindergarten and I had a mask on but, I digress… I had never been in a performance where I was purely meant to be gawked or laughed at. I will never forget that performance because it is what forced me to draw my personal line in the sand. After our first dress rehearsal in the costumes with the crew, publicists, performers etc watching us, I walked out of the Barclay Center shaking and crying. Thankfully, my best friends, Kelly and Kerri, happened to be NYC to visit me. They were waiting for me and I walked up to them and broke down. I love being the center of attention, but that was something different. I was being stared and laughed at for all of the wrong reasons. I was being looked at as a prop … as something less than human.

One of the women who was a backup dancer during Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMAs performance — as a bear — wrote about the less-than-inspiring experience for her blog. The woman, whose name I haven’t yet figured out, is a little person (LP is the shorthand she uses in the post) and she explains that up until the day of the performance, she didn’t know what she would be dancing to or as, and that that after what she found to be a dehumanizing experience, she’ll no longer take gigs like this. She continues: Keep reading »

Miley Cyrus Says She Doesn't Pay Attention To The Negative
"You're thinking about it more than I thought about it."

“I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music? Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history. Me and Robin, the whole time said, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now.’ What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later, and people are still talking about it. They’re over thinking it. You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me.”

– I don’t think anyone will be surprised to learn that Miley Cyrus did not put much thought into her MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke. I don’t think anyone thinks she’s anything but a 20-year-old, having fun and never hearing “no.” While I think she has a point that the VMAs have always featured “shocking” performances that people remember for years, I think she’s missing a valuable opportunity to, you know, learn something from how her performance was received regardless of its intent. Like that it’s not cool to treat black women’s bodies like props, for example. And, you know, to keep her tongue in the mouth, please. [via E! Online]
