Newsflash: Divorce Doesn't Always Work Out Well For Women

So here’s a thing that is making my eye twitch: There is a (fringe) group of people — mostly men — who believe that divorce is, basically, a feminist conspiracy meant not to empower women to live autonomous lives (y’know, the whole “pursuit of happiness” thing) but to allow women to destroy men’s lives.

This is largely a product of the Red Pill community. For the vast numbers of people who live in blessed ignorance of Red Pill, it’s a group of people (again, mostly men) who believe that they’ve “taken the red pill” (à la “The Matrix”) and embraced the painful reality that our society is increasingly being set up to disadvantage men. Not that this is an actual reality: They believe that “involuntary celibacy” exists, i.e. they are having celibacy forced on them; they are disadvantaged for being virgins; their entire identity is wrapped up in having or not having sex. They’re the notorious believers in pick-up artistry, a concept that posits that since all women are brainless automatons, there’s a magical formula of actions and behaviors you can adopt to manipulate women into sleeping with you. They’re so obsessed with false rape accusations that they practically never actually validate the fact that women in America are raped (and then, if she was, of course, she probably deserved it). They buy into the “alpha/beta” social theory (because humans are dogs!). They talk about women in terms of monetary value. They believe they are buying their “partners.”

And they hate divorce, because in the Red Pill community’s minds divorce is a system set up to allow women to vacuum money out of men’s bank accounts and steal children away from their fathers. They believe men should be able to divorce women for even spurious reasons, but women should be shamed for getting divorced (by the way, read all of these links at the risk of your sanity). Pad Gardner, The Man Who Wants To Be A Maxi Pad, Alleges He Was Assaulted By MRAs

Meet Pad Gardner
He wants to become a Kotex maxi pad. Read More »

Remember Pad Gardner, the guy who is trying to become a pink, disposable maxi pad? Pad is obviously a unique individual and his desire to be something that is, according to his Facebook About Me section, “pressed against a soft vulva for a woman’s period” seems fairly harmless. (Although maybe I just think that because I use tampons and/or a Diva Cup, and no pads of any kind ever go near my vulva.) But according to a Facebook status update posted last night, Pad has become a target of Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs). Pad’s post explains:

Today I went to my math class at the college, and upon leaving class I was being followed around by two guys. After leaving the college they continued to follow me downtown as I walked. I realized I was being followed, and hid inside a bathroom downtown. They came into the bathroom, and jumped me. They said I didn’t belong in the Men’s Room. They hit me in the stomach and ran. Ohio University Student In Hiding After MRA Website Misidentifies Her As A “False Rape Accuser”

Ohio University Student In Hiding After MRA Website Misidentifies Her As A "False Rape Accuser"

Last week, a video which showed a young man giving oral sex to a young woman in public in Athens, Ohio, went viral. Shortly thereafter, the unidentified woman reported that the video — shot on October 12 — actually depicted not a consensual sex act, but a sexual assault. This week, a men’s rights website called Crimes Against Fathers decided to publish the name, address and phone number of the woman they believe is in the video, branding her a liar and “an evil woman,” saying she was lying about being raped. Revealing the identity of an alleged rape victim is terrible enough — but the Ohio University student Crimes Against Fathers has identified as being in the video, Rachel Cassidy (above), says it’s not her in the video and that she’s the target of a witch hunt.

Peter Nolan, the man behind Crimes Against Fathers, told The New York Daily News in an email, “I believe that it is VERY likely Rachel Cassidy is the woman in the now viral video. … There are a great deal of similarity in looks between the woman in the video/photos and Rachel Cassidy.” In his post identifying Cassidy as the woman in the video — a connection made initially by members of 4Chan — Nolan says it’s “very clear” that the sex act in the viral video “was fully VOLUNTARY.” Aside from a physical resemblance, Nolan, who lives in Germany, offers no further proof that the woman is actually Cassidy. The Best Of The #MensRightsMovies Twitter Hashtag

I love reading about how clever trending hashtags are born. The Daily Dot has a post about the currently trending #MensRightsMovies hashtag, which was born out Aaminah Khan‘s punning tweet about bronies, above. The hashtag took off almost instantly, with hundreds of others contributing their own hilarious anti-woman/anti-feminist/pro-MRA spins on popular movie titles. On Thursday night, I had what seemed like a pretty good first date. By Friday lunchtime, any chance of a romance between that guy and I had fallen spectacularly to pieces.

I wrote about what went down in a post called “An Open Letter To The Guy Who Called Me ‘Crazy.’”  I’ve been pretty thrilled by its reception, particularly all the messages from women who’ve said they totally relate to what happened with Mean Crazy Bitch Guy. However, something in the comment thread has caught my eye: a (new) commenter penned a lengthy comment insinuating Mean Crazy Bitch Guy was actually the victim in the entire scenario and that he lashed out and called me horrible names because he “[felt] creep shamed.”

“Creep shamed”? I thought. I know that term from somewhere. Where is it …? Oh, right, it’s a “men’s rights activist” term. But I wanted to know more. Keep reading »
