Michelle Williams Continues Her Depressing-But-Good Movie Streak

Since hitting the big time with her “Dawson’s Creek” character Jen Lindley, Michelle Williams has gone on to make mostly independent films. Besides “Brokeback Mountain,” a lot of her movies haven’t landed in theaters—at least not in wide release—and I’ve Netflixed a few of them recently. Right now, I’m halfway through “Wendy and Lucy,” about a young woman who lives out of her car with her dog, and I have to watch it in parts so I don’t get too down. It’s great, but depressing as hell. I think I might have the same reaction to her and Gael Garcia Bernal’s upcoming film, “Mammoth,” which comes to theaters Nov. 20. The movie tells the story of a young family that seems to have it all, until a series of events change their lives. Do you like movies that show the sad side of life? Or do you stick to comedies and lighter films?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Next Big Movie

So my boyfriend—Joseph Gordon-Levitt, not to be confused with my other boyfriend, Ryan Gosling—has made a new movie, and it looks awesome! “Uncertainty” is about a couple who leave some major decision—what, we don’t know—up to the flip of a coin, and the film looks at the two scenarios that could unfold. It’s kind of like “Sliding Doors” with some shoot-‘em-up thriller action thrown in for excitement. Now, what am I going to wear to the premiere?

If Blow-Up Dolls Could Talk ...

Blow-up dolls have feelings, too, you know. They’re not simply inanimate objects that lonely men can have their way with. At least that’s the premise behind the Japanese film “Air Doll.” Based on a manga, “Air Doll” tells the story of an inflatable sex doll who magically comes to life and explores the world after her owner leaves for work each day. She even starts dating a man she meets in a video rental store. The movie, which was shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, isn’t available on Netflix quite yet, but we’ve already added it to our queue in anticipation of its U.S. release.

Mo’Nique And Mariah Carey Give Stellar Performances In “Precious”

“Precious,” adapted from the novel Push by Sapphire, is a gritty indie film directed by Lee Daniels about an obese and illiterate teen who is pregnant for a second time by her own father. Set in Harlem in 1987, the story follows Precious as she struggles with her insecurities and disastrous home life while using what resources she has to improve her life. Although, “Precious” has an impressive cast, Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Shepherd, Paula Patton, and Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe in the starring role, Mariah and Mo’Nique’s performances are already generating Oscar buzz. Mariah strips off the makeup and glitz from her normal life and steps into the role of a social worker. Mo’Nique is terrifying as she plays Mary, Precious’ mother, who is both physically and verbally abusive and delusional. Mary has the power to crush all of Precious’ hopes. Gabby also gives a great performance in her acting debut for someone who auditioned on a whim. If the book is any indication, “Precious” won’t wallow in the bleak details of the main character’s life. Instead it captures an energy that is pushed along by anger and hope. If you need more encouragement to see this film when it opens Nov. 6, consider that it won three awards at the Sundance Film Festival, including the coveted Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, and received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Why Are Porn Parodies So Popular?

Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock for the last couple of years, you may have noticed an uptick in adult movie spoofs. From “30 Rock” to “The Cosby Show,” no show is sacred when it comes to X-rated remakes of popular sitcoms and movies. But why are movies like “Not the Bradys XXX” the “new gold rush in porn”? According to one director, it’s not the sex that’s the ticket; it’s the humor. (Yeah, right.) And what sacred TV cow does he want to take hardcore next? “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Yowza. Trailer Park: “Inglourious Basterds,” “Post Grad,” “Shorts,” “World’s Greatest Dad”

Do you really need an excuse to go to the movie theater? It’s nearly fall, you’ve gotten enough sun to worry your dermatologist, it’s still hot out, air conditioning is expensive, and there are a helluva lot of movies coming out these days! Keep up! This week you can get some revenge on Nazis with “Inglourious Basterds,” get anxious about the employment rate with “Post Grad,” make a wish with “Shorts,” or take solace in the fact that your life isn’t as depressing as Robin Williams’ in “World’s Greatest Dad.”

Clips From “The September Issue”: Sienna Miller Didn’t Look Good In A Wig

By the time “The September Issue” comes to New York Aug. 28, the entire documentary will be available in bits and pieces on the internet. Two new clips have just been released: one (above) with an editor freaking out about Sienna Miller’s wig not working for the cover shoot, and another (after the jump) of creative director Grace Coddington dressing a model for a photo shoot and talking about how she is the last stylist to buckle models’ shoes.

While some have wondered whether this Vogue documentary will make editor-in-chief Anna Wintour look bad, I worry about how Sienna Miller will deal with the film. Normally, celebrities don’t know exactly what goes into making them look good enough for glossy magazine pages, but the doc shows photographers, hairstylists, and editors focusing on her flaws. It’s no fun having people call you “teeth-y” and talk about your fillings. [via Racked]

Holla! Another New Moon Teaser Trailer

It doesn’t take much to get “Twilight” fans in a tizzy. This new 14-second teaser trailer for “New Moon” is certainly doing the trick. What does the trailer show us? To, uh, not have high expectations for the acting and dialogue in this flick. OK, fine. We won’t judge it on this tiny snippet. But I think we can all agree that the highlight here is Taylor Lautner‘s bod. He’s over 18, right?

Attractive People Abound In “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”

We’ve been hearing bits and pieces about Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” for a while, ever since Heath Ledger died during production and his role had to be recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell. From the looks of it, this movie will be a feast for the eyes, and I’m not just talking about the special effects.

Coming Soon: New York, I Love You

New York, I Love You Trailer

Poor Catherine. For the last year she’s been obsessively waiting for the release of “New York, I Love You,” originally slated for last Valentine’s Day, but now being released sometime this fall. And what do you know? The day the official trailer and the first movie poster pop up on the web (or at least our radar), she’s out of the office! Well, guess she’ll have something to look forward to watching when she gets back.

The film is a series of vignettes by different directors, all telling a uniquely New York story, taking place in a different neighborhood or borough. The cast is stupendous: Natalie Portman, Rachel Bilson, Shia LaBeouf, Hayden Christensen, Orlando Bloom, Blake Lively, John Hurt, Ethan Hawke, Robin Wright Penn, Cloris Leachman, Drea de Matteo, seriously, the list goes on and on. Check out the trailer, after the jump…

“Amelia” Tells The Story Of The Legendary Aviatrix

Part of the reason my parents named me Amelia was in honor of Amelia Earhart, the female aviator. Earhart broke a bunch of aviation records and was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was pronounced dead in 1939, a year and a half after her plane vanished on a flight somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Her body was never found. The first trailer for the biopic “Amelia,” starring Hilary Swank, has been released and it’s got OSCAR written all over it. I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed in the casting. Yes, Swank is a double Oscar winner, but, um, I find her kind of boring. I can’t help but think Amy Adams—who plays Earhart in “Night At The Museum 2”—would have been a fresher choice. But I’ll reserve final judgment until I see the flick, which I think all Amelias should get free tickets to.

The Boyfriend Experience

By now, you’ve probably heard of “The Girlfriend Experience,” Steven Soderbergh’s new movie about a high-end call girl who charges $2,000 for the privilege of letting guys pretend she’s their girlfriend and who’s played by porn star Sasha Grey. But have you heard of “The Boyfriend Experience”? The crew over at Totally Sketch has created a highly amusing faux trailer for the nonexistent sequel to the GFE feature. This time, the storyline focuses on a nice young woman who has a total jerk for a boyfriend. And guess how much he charges by the hour to ignore you, eat your food, and make a mess everywhere? Well, it’s a heck of a lot more than you’d think. [Cinematical]

Keira Knightley And Sienna Miller Fight Over A Man In “The Edge Of Love”

Keira Knightley seems to make period film after period film, and “The Edge of Love” doesn’t break the trend. In it, she and Sienna Miller play two women loved by the famous poet Dylan Thomas. The movie is out in very limited release in the U.S., but we think it looks worth Netflixing for a few reasons: 1) Lindsay Lohan was originally cast in the role Sienna plays, and we’d like to imagine how the train-wreck would have played it. 2) A first, we didn’t even recognize Sienna Miller. She had to put on a little weight for the role, and she looks lovelier than ever. 3) Matthew Rhys, aka Kevin Walker on “Brothers & Sisters,” plays Dylan Thomas. 4) Cillian Murphy and his baby blues.

If Love Is A Sniper, Kill Me

There are so many great movies out in theaters now: “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Revolutionary Road,” “Marley & Me”… But I’m a broke ass ho who can’t afford to pay $12 a ticket, but, thanks to the TV, I saw this lil’ gem, “Bed Head,” during a film festival and it’s up on YouTube for free. Yay, for the interweb! Now, I’m not sure why the lady star is wearing a tube dress and carrying a clutch mid-day, but love is all about the suspension of disbelief.

New “Twilight” Trailer: This Movie Is Going To Suck (Blood)

Forget it. I am so excited to see this movie. The new trailer for “Twilight” is out and dang, it looks pretty awesome and I’m not just saying that because Robert Pattinson makes my loins burn in the pleasurable way (as opposed to the bladder infection way). So tell me, “Twilight” fans, which of the books should I read in anticipation of the film? I want to walk into the theater with an understanding of the “Twilight” universe.

Preview: “Confessions Of A Shopaholic”

Catherine and I cannot wait for “Confessions Of A Shopaholic” to hit theaters in February 2009 and we’re not embarrassed to say it. Based on the novel(s) by Sophia Kinsella, the film stars adorable Isla Fisher as Rebecca, a woman for whom shopping is the world’s great aphrodisiac. I wouldn’t have thought I would be THAT psyched about this movie, because the books (I’ve read one…okay, maybe two) are insanely mediocre as far as chick lit goes. But by the looks of the film’s trailer, Fisher breathes such life into an otherwise “meh” character, that it seems certain the movie will, for once, be way, way, way better than the book.

The Harvey Milk Biopic Does A Body Good

Back in February, we got our panties in a bunch over the making of a new movie called Milk.  Based on the swinging ‘70s life of San Francisco gay activist and politician Harvey Milk, the biopic stars Sean Penn, James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Diego Luna.  Needless to say, we can’t wait to see this film, which is practically guaranteed to be an Oscar contender. Sigh, we’ll have to wait for the film to be released on December 5.  But today, they threw us a cookie crumb to go with that Milk in the form of the movie’s trailer. We promise you at least one shirtless stud.  Both the sexy stars and the dramatic storyline about the fight for basic human rights have got us all fired up!

A Romantic Movie That Doesn’t Suck?

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

Most romantic comedies are a little sap-tastic with few moments that are actually funny. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, looks cute, and more importantly, funny. I’m sitting in a coffee shop with my headphones in, and I actually laughed out loud while watching it. Seriously, people are looking at me. It comes out October 3.
