Now that Mother’s Day is over, it’s time for some real talk on this “mothering” thing. Own own mom might be in line for sainthood, but we’ve dated some dudes whose mamas made “Monster-In-Law” look like an episode of “Teletubbies.”
My personal least-favorite mother-of-an-ex-boyfriend was the one who didn’t think I was good enough for her son because I didn’t attend an Ivy League college and repeatedly put down my writing career. This she-beast asked me about my salary and insinuated more than a few times that I should get a ”respectable” job in finance or law. I guess loving her son with all of my heart was not good enough?

Recently we asked Frisky readers to send us their favorite recipes from Mama — or, you know, a suitable maternal-like figure. Everyone’s mom has some special recipe that brings you right back home whenever you eat it. In honor of Mother’s Day (this Sunday, don’t forget!), we’ve collected half a dozen yummy recipes from readers’ mothers that should keep us in the kitchen all weekend.
Why don’t you choose one to make your mom this Sunday?
When I think about Mother’s Day, I usually picture a dad in plaid pajama pants destroying the kitchen with his kids in a clumsy effort to make his wife breakfast in bed. There is flour everywhere, kids are enthusiastically beating something in a bowl and Dad is putting a single red rose in a vase. The entourage brings breakfast to Mom, who is leisurely reclining on a mountain of pillows. Soon her kids are nibbling at the pancakes on her tray and her husband tells her she has an appointment for a massage/manicure/facial in a few hours. “Until then,” he says proudly, “you’re off duty.”
Mother’s Day looks a little different in our house. Because our four-year old son has two moms, it’s not always clear who gets special treatment that day. We both work hard all year and could both use a whole day “off.” Keep reading »
