Today’s Lady News: ACLU Sues Catholic Bishops Over Abortion Policies At Hospitals

todays lady news
  • The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Catholic bishops for denying medical care to women by refusing to provide the morning-after pill and perform abortions in their hospitals. In some counties, a Catholic hospital is the only place for a pregnant woman to receive medical care. Such was the situation for Tameska Means, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, who was exposed to dangerous infections after her water broke after only 18 weeks of pregnancy but Mercy Health Partners in Michigan did not even offer to induce labor or remove the fetus. Instead, Means suffered in pain until she miscarried, going to the hospital seeking help a total of three times. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops makes directives for medical care at Mercy Health Partners. [New York Times] Keep reading »

Bad News: The Morning After Pill Could Be Less Effective For Women Over 165 Lbs

todays lady news
  • A European company making a morning-after pill similar to Plan B says it has found its product, Norvelo, to be less effective for women over 165 lbs. and to not work at all for women over 176 lbs. Obviously, this has implications for American-made emergency contraception and whether it, too, is ineffective for some women. All the more reason to use another primary form of contraception,  ladies and gents.[TIME]

Pro-Choice Activist Secretly Tapes “Crisis Pregnancy Center” Counselor Lying

Today's Lady News photo
  • Kate, a 24-year-old pro-choice activist, went undercover at a so-called “crisis pregnancy center” in Cleveland and secretly taped the counselor doling out medically inaccurate advice, like how emergency contraception could cause her to “hemorrhage” and “is like having an abortion.” It’s absolutely outrageous the way the counselor completely lies to her! You have to watch these videos, they’re insane. How scary is it that plenty of women go to CPCs because they think they will receive real, actual, medically unbiased reproductive health counseling? In an enormous victory for women and girls across the nation, the Food and Drug Administration finally approved the Plan B One-Step brand morning-after pill for over-the-counter use. Plan B One-Step is a one-pill version of emergency contraception and this approval covers women and girls of all ages. Like all EC, it is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex. If taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, EC is almost 90 percent more effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy.

Earlier this month, the Obama administration backed off its resistance to making the morning-after pill accessible OTC to women and girls of all ages. Previously, Obama had been against girls younger than 15 being able to access the pill. Keep reading »

The two-pill version of the morning-after pill must be immediately available over-the-counter without age restrictions, a federal appeals court has ruled today. However, the court also upheld a “stay” on the one-pill version of emergency contraception (called Plan B One-Step), essentially agreeing with the Obama administration that its use for young teens needs further review.

In response to today’s decision, the president for the Center of Reproductive Rights said in a statement, “After more than a decade of politically motivated delays, women will no longer have to endure intrusive, onerous and medically unnecessary restrictions to get emergency contraception.”
