At the risk of sounding like my dad, who is genuinely appalled that there are pants in this world that cost more than $15, have you seen the prices of gloves and mittens lately? I was poking through some accessory racks over the weekend and only found a couple options for less than 50 bucks. So, in the interest of warm fingers and non-empty bank accounts, I went searching for some stylish options for $20 or less. From stripes to plaid to studded leather, click on the gallery to see what I found!
As much as we’d love to embrace the springy fashions that are starting to pop up in stores, it is still very much winter, and bundling up is the name of the game. Here are eight of our favorite mittens–all handmade by Etsy artisans, and all 20 bucks or less. Throw on a pair. Your fingers will thank you.
As a dog owner, I spend a lot of time outside during the dead of winter, clutching a leash or tossing a ball at the snow-covered park. I am also a native Californian, and even after 10 years on the East Coast, I haven’t quite acclimated to temperatures below 50 degrees. As a result, super warm winter accessories are everything to me. However, I have the habit of losing scarves, gloves, and hats, so I don’t like to shell out a ton of dough for them. That’s why I was so stoked — see, still got a Cali girl hiding inside me — to find these fleece-lined mittens at H&M. They’re majorly cost-effective and feel like a cocoon of clouds around my paws. Like Uggs for your hands, only not as ugly!
Usually I love Hadley Freedman, the style writer at the London Guardian. First, because she’s in London, so I automatically assume everything she writes is more cultured and posh. But second, because she writes about style in a way that’s intelligent and thoughtful without the usual “LOVE ZOMG I’M DYING” tripe that passes for “criticism” these days.
But now you’re on my bad side, Hadley: You’ve gone after mittens. Keep reading »
The first sign of cold, and we’re already eagerly scoping out winter goods. (We know. It can be a problem.) So we were smitten when we came across these Steven Alan mittens—the perfect cute-combo with their fingerless gloves, cozy-looking cashmere, and cool metallic leather. Even the name is rad: Glittens!
But alas, the $128 price tag cast a harsh frostbite over our find. Sure, when it comes to a winter coat, it’s natural to invest some bones … but justifying the idea of gloves as an investment piece? Not so sure.
Would you spring for (or ahem, fall in this case), these “Glittens”? [StevenAlan.com] Keep reading »
When the cold weather hits, looking hot isn’t an easy thing to achieve. In many cases, an attempt to stay warm can result in a Marshmallow Man phenomenon, something that wasn’t even stylish in 1984. Check out these scarves, gloves, and other winter warmers that will dress you up, but not necessarily weigh you down. Keep reading »
