Miss America Nina Davuluri: Too Indian For America, Too Dark For India?

Who could blame you if on Sunday night, after Miss America was crowned, you wanted to quit America for a little bit — or at least Twitter? Nina Davuluri, an aspiring med student, performed a Bollywood dance, charmed the judges’ hearts, and took home the coveted, glitzy Miss America crown. She also poked the bear that is racist morons on the Internet. The Syracuse, New York-born Davuluri was called everything from an “Arab” to a member of “Al-Quaeda” to “Miss 7-11″ … despite being from the good ol’ U.S. of A suburbs.

Well, this story gets even more depressing. Miss America Nina Davuluri might be too brown for some racist twats to consider her “American.” But, some people have noted, Davulauri might be too dark-skinned to be considered pageant-worthy in India, a country that has been known to privilege fair-skinned women who lighten their complexion with dangerous skin-bleaching creams. Racists Are Upset That The Newly Crowned Miss America Is Of Indian Descent

Nina Davuluri Indian miss america 2014

I didn’t watch the Miss America Pageant last night because “Breaking Bad” was on and DUH. But when I learned that the woman crowned, Miss New York Nina Davuluri, was the first woman of Indian descent to be awarded the crown, I was like, Oh cool. Stupid honor, no doubt, but hey, diversity! Some people who apparently take the Miss America Pageant seriously had the opposite reaction. Davuluri was forced to spend her first few hours with the title defending herself against those who say she’s not American simply because she’s brown. First, there were the moronic tweets (collected by The New York Daily News):

“How the fuck does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! #idiots.”

“If you’re #MissAmerica you should have to be American.”

“9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?”

sgt theresa vail miss america tattoos

Sgt. Theresa Vail is quite the unconventional beauty pageant contestant. On Sunday, September 15th, she will become the first Miss America contestant permitted to expose her ink. Keep reading »

Miss America Contestant Says She’ll Get A Double Mastectomy Even If She Wins

For all the talk about Miss America being a “scholarship program,” we all know that at its essence, it’s still more a beauty contest than anything else. And even though the definition of beauty has evolved in so many ways over the years, some notions of it have not changed. Which is why current Miss District of Columbia (and former Miss Maryland) Allyn Rose has received hate mail over her plans for a double mastectomy. It turns out some die-hard pageant fans feel that a woman without breasts can’t meet the requirements of the title.

Allyn is planning to get a double mastectomy after her year of service as Miss DC or Miss America is over. Her mom, grandmother, and aunt all died of the disease and she feels as though this is her best chance of beating it. The preventative mastectomy has long been a controversial choice for women. Some people bristle at the idea of removing your breast before there is a confirmed problem. But for Allyn, it’s the safest option for a healthy future. “For me, breast cancer is not a matter of if. It’s almost a matter of when,” she told “Today.” Read more…

Miss Arkansas’ Ventriloquism Act Isn’t Enough To Win Miss America Title

Saturday night’s Miss America pageant should have come down to three ladies: Miss New York, who was running on a gay rights platform; Miss Delaware, who suffers from alopecia and is bald; and above, Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady, whose talent was this amazingly bizarre ventriloquism act. Sadly, a blonde robot hailing from Nebraska won the coveted title. Boo. Hiss. [via Buzzfeed] Keep reading »

Joy Behar Will Judge Miss America Pageant Based On “Intelligence, Talents”

“I realize it is out of character for me to be judging Miss America. But maybe it will make the show more modern or bring it up to date. I do always find the odd girls prettier. But I don’t think I am going to judge anybody on their beauty as much as their intelligence and their talents. … This is a complete departure for me. But I have a permission slip from Gloria Steinem.”

Joy Behar To Judge The 2011 Miss America Pageant

Color me shocked: Joy Behar, the one co-host of “The View” who makes any damn sense, will be judging the 2011 Miss America pageant. Now, if the qualities needed to rate women in bikinis include not being a misogynist and a prescription pill addict, Joy Behar is a vast improvement over last year’s judge, Rush Limbaugh. Still, what is this woman thinking? Keep reading »

Miss New York Wins Crown With Gay Rights Platform

Meet Miss New York 2010, Claire Buffie. Like many beauty queens before her, Claire has selected a platform to run her campaign for Miss America on, only she hasn’t selected a topic that’s as palatable as, say, “breast cancer research” or “education.” No, Claire won her state competition — and is competing for Miss America — on a gay rights platform, calling for equal treatment of gays and lesbians. As Drew Grant writes over at Crushable, this is especially awesome considering most beauty queens are “pigeonholed as the Carrie Prejean anti-gay-sex/pro-secret-porn-tape type.” Claire is the first woman in the pageant’s 100-year history to be campaigning on this issue and it’s a personal one for her; her sister is a lesbian. In this interview with MSNBC, Claire says she isn’t worried that the controversial issue — and her progressive views — will harm her chances at taking the crown. She says the Miss America organization is “looking for a woman who is intelligent and compassionate, and who is working every day diligently in her community to effect positive and lasting change, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.” [Crushable] Keep reading »

Barf: Dress Your Little Beauty Queen In Miss America-Approved Attire!

Apparently, the world can’t get enough of pint-sized beauty queens and toddlers in tiaras because the Miss America pageant decided to expand its empire to include a clothing line for miniature divas! Where once stage moms dressed their mini-mes in poofy skirts and kitten heels from the local pageant store, now they can put them in French terry hoodies, purses, rugby-striped polo dresses, bathrobes, and ballet slippers — all for under $25 and preciously decorated with the requisite tiaras, sparkle, and stars. On the plus side, the line is vaguely age-appropriate in that there aren’t any midriff-baring shirts or skimpy skirts, and the makers claim the focus is on empowerment and positive self-esteem in young girls. Uh-huh. [WWD] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Miss America Is Homeless!

  • The cable channel TLC has announced its three-year contract to air the Miss America beauty pageant is complete and there won’t be a renewal. Could it be that beauty pageants are finally no longer relevant? [Variety]
  • Warning, people who live in Bristol, Tennessee: some random person might walk up to you on the street and hand you a pamphlet that says:
“You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed. Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged? Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin. By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?”

If this happens to you, you’ll have a lot in common with 19-year-old Keshia Cantor, who received such a pamphlet from a lady at the drive-thru window at the Hi-Lo Burger where she works. Area religious groups say they have no idea who is responsible for distributing the disturbing pamphlets. [Tricities.com]
