I’m Ready For A Bald Miss USA

Miss Delaware, Kayla Martell, one of the ladies competing for the Miss America title this week, believes she has a leg up on her fellow competitors … her baldness. Suffering from a rare form of alopecia, Kayla started losing her hair in her early teens. “By the time I was 13, my hair was out completely. The thought of getting a wig never crossed my mind at all. My mother first brought up the suggestion and brought home this awful brown wig. I don’t know why, because I’m naturally blond and everyone in my family is blond. I wore it to school, but took it off in the middle of the day, put it in my backpack and never looked back,” she explained. Keep reading »

Decrowned Miss USA Leona Gage Dies At 71

Leona Gage, the OG of beauty pageant scandalites, died this weekend of heart failure. So what’s her story? In 1957, Leona was crowned Miss USA only to have her title stripped days later. The scandal? That she was married and had two children. Well, I never! Actually, the story is pretty juicy—Leona claimed to be 21 on her pageant forms but was actually 18. She’d gotten married at age 14 and had her second baby at 16. After the Miss USA scandal, she became a regular on late night television, appearing on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and several others. And we think tabloid culture is a new thing? [NY Daily News] Keep reading »

Tripping Won’t Cost You The Miss USA Crown

For all those aspiring beauty pageant hopefuls out there, here’s glimmer of hope. Though, generally, poise and grace are keys to winning the crown, the latest Miss USA wasn’t exactly full of balance and stability this weekend at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant, took the stage in a white gown as Miss Michigan, and while showing off her evening wear, she almost tripped on her train. Now, that small error could have majorly altered the final results of just who would go on to win the entire show, but not this time. Despite her close call with the train, judges found Rima to be the most beautiful, most elegant, and most well-spoken of the contestants, and they named her the newest Miss USA. Just like models, beauty contestants prove they’re real people with their balance issues. [Daily Mail]

Miss USA Rima Fakih: 10 Things To Know

Two things happened to Rima Fakih yesterday. She nearly went splat after tripping over the long train of her wedding-like gown. And more importantly, the Miss Michigan USA pageant queen was crowned Miss USA. Rima, who was born in Lebanon and moved to the U.S. as a baby, said she knew she’d be crowned the winner when she saw Donald Trump‘s expression. “That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’ on ‘The Apprentice,’ she said. Rima will go on to represent the U.S. in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also will receive a New York apartment for one year, an undisclosed salary, and various beauty, health, and professional services. After the jump, find out more about Rima, including the surprising talent that helped her win another kind of contest. Keep reading »

Miss USA Contestants Strip Down For Photos. Cue The Controversy.

Conveniently just in time for the live webcast of the Miss USA pageant tomorrow night, there’s a BIG CONTROVERSY stirring up lots of press for the event. (And since I know it’s hard to keep your pageants straight, this is not Miss America. This is the pageant that brought us Carrie Prejean, the one which Donald Trump owns, which sends its winner to Miss Universe, and which was featured in that MTV reality series “Pageant Place.”) A few days ago, Miss USA unveiled its promo photos, showing the contestants in racy lingerie, posing on beds in all sorts of suggestive ways. Apparently, some of the women were not OK with the shoot. Because everyone loves a good beauty pageant scandal, right? Keep reading »

Frisky Rant: The One Thing Ivanka Trump Has To Do To Be Taken Seriously

It’s no secret that I have a rather low threshold for Rich Kids, especially Celebrity Rich Kids, who don’t get their elbows particularly dirty building up their resumes like the rest of us. A few months ago, I wrote a post grousing about how Ivanka Trump wrote a business advice book called The Trump Card; I found this super-obnoxious considering her life couldn’t be more different than those of the regular folks reading her book. Ivanka even admitted on “The View” that Anna Wintour offered her a job at Vogue upon graduation.

Last night Ivanka appeared with her dad, Donald, on “Celebrity Apprentice.” And I had the realization that I’d be eminently less annoyed with Ivanka if she undid some of her father’s damage. I’d like her to start with the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA competitions. Keep reading »

Miss USA Carrie Prejean Loses Her Crown … Finally

Miss California, Carrie Prejean, has been dethroned for what is being vaguely termed “contract violations”, but what really sounds like a prissy attitude because Prejean refused to make certain appearances. Keith Lewis, a state pageant director said, “It has become abundantly clear that Carrie is unwilling to fulfill her obligations under our contract and work together.” The verdict isn’t a surprise, but is perhaps a bit belated considering the nude picture scandal that almost lost her the crown last month. Along with her public statements against “opposite” marriage (that’s gay marriage for those not proficient in ditz), Prejean hasn’t been America’s favorite figure. She’ll be replaced by runner-up Tami Farrell. With sex, beauty, lies, and probably a lot of tears, we think it’s only a matter of time before Hollywood adapts this story for the small screen. Is Slut-Shaming Carrie Prejean Really Necessary?

When Carrie Prejean lost last month’s Miss USA pageant because (some think) she opposed gay marriage, after which she did an ad for the National Organization for Marriage, rather than attending to her Miss California “duties,” she made it pretty clear where her loyalty lies. It makes sense strategically — her anti-gay marriage stance ruined her appeal for many, but it did increase her popularity with a powerful few. Prejean hedged her bets by distancing herself from the Miss California Organization and lining up with those who had her back. She wasn’t going to be a pageant queen forever, after all.

She should have handed over her crown to someone who was interested in fulfilling those Miss California duties — whatever they are — since she had better things to do. But she didn’t and because of that — and Perez Hilton’s relentless campaign against her — Prejean stayed in the spotlight and the inevitable happened. Topless photos! Of a beauty queen! Who believes in God! The hypocrisy! Let the slut-shaming begin! Keep reading »

Miss California Carrie Prejean Exposed

Oh, dear. Miss California Carrie Prejean, who made headlines for her answer to a question about gay marriage at last month’s Miss USA pageant, has more secrets spilling out of her closet. First, it was revealed that the Miss California Organization paid for Prejean to get breast implants prior to the Miss USA pageant. Now, a topless photos of the beauty queen have been leaked to The Dirty. Miss USA judge Perez Hilton claims his sources say more photos of Prejean in a state of undress are due to hit the internet. Normally, I’d be like, “Topless? Who cares?” Considering Prejean believes “gay marriage isn’t biblically correct,” I’m amped to holler: “Hypocrite!” Stripping your top off and shooting the camera that come hither look is not what Jesus would do. Click here to see the full photo (safe for work!).

Prejean released a statement: “I am a Christian, and I am a model. Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos that were taken of me as a teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid website that openly mocks me for my Christian faith. I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be.”

One small problem? This puts Prejean at odds with her contract with the Miss California Organization, which prohibits its representatives for posing for photographs in a state of full or partial nudity. Keep reading »
