Saturday night’s Miss America pageant should have come down to three ladies: Miss New York, who was running on a gay rights platform; Miss Delaware, who suffers from alopecia and is bald; and above, Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady, whose talent was this amazingly bizarre ventriloquism act. Color me shocked: Joy Behar, the one co-host of “The View” who makes any damn sense, will be judging the 2011 Miss America pageant. Now, if the qualities needed to rate women in bikinis include not being a misogynist and a prescription pill addict, Joy Behar is a vast improvement over last year’s judge, Rush Limbaugh. Miss New York Wins Crown With Gay Rights Platform

Meet Miss New York 2010, Claire Buffie. Like many beauty queens before her, Claire has selected a platform to run her campaign for Miss America on, only she hasn’t selected a topic that’s as palatable as, say, “breast cancer research” or “education.” No, Claire won her state competition — and is competing for Miss America — on a gay rights platform, calling for equal treatment of gays and lesbians. As Drew Grant writes over at Crushable, this is especially awesome considering most beauty queens are “pigeonholed as the Carrie Prejean anti-gay-sex/pro-secret-porn-tape type.” Claire is the first woman in the pageant’s 100-year history to be campaigning on this issue and it’s a personal one for her; her sister is a lesbian. In this interview with MSNBC, Claire says she isn’t worried that the controversial issue — and her progressive views — will harm her chances at taking the crown. She says the Miss America organization is “looking for a woman who is intelligent and compassionate, and who is working every day diligently in her community to effect positive and lasting change, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.” [Crushable] Keep reading »

Barf: Dress Your Little Beauty Queen In Miss America-Approved Attire!

Apparently, the world can’t get enough of pint-sized beauty queens and toddlers in tiaras because the Miss America pageant decided to expand its empire to include a clothing line for miniature divas! Where once stage moms dressed their mini-mes in poofy skirts and kitten heels from the local pageant store, now they can put them in French terry hoodies, purses, rugby-striped polo dresses, bathrobes, and ballet slippers — all for under $25 and preciously decorated with the requisite tiaras, sparkle, and stars. On the plus side, the line is vaguely age-appropriate in that there aren’t any midriff-baring shirts or skimpy skirts, and the makers claim the focus is on empowerment and positive self-esteem in young girls. Today’s Lady News: Miss America Is Homeless!

  • The cable channel TLC has announced its three-year contract to air the Miss America beauty pageant is complete and there won’t be a renewal. Could it be that beauty pageants are finally no longer relevant? [Variety]
  • Warning, people who live in Bristol, Tennessee: some random person might walk up to you on the street and hand you a pamphlet that says:
    “You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed. Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged? Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin. By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?”

    If this happens to you, you’ll have a lot in common with 19-year-old Keshia Cantor, who received such a pamphlet from a lady at the drive-thru window at the Hi-Lo Burger where she works. Area religious groups say they have no idea who is responsible for distributing the disturbing pamphlets. [Tricities.com]

Rush Limbaugh Loves The Women’s Movement, Especially Walking Behind It

Obnoxious quote of the day time! Last week, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh judged the Miss America beauty pageant and this morning, he chatted with “Fox and Friends” about the experience. Interviewer Gretchen Carlson asked the host about critics who have said Limbaugh hasn’t “been a supporter of women in the past.” Limbaugh replied, “Oh, I’m a huge supporter of women. … I love the women’s movement—especially when walking behind it.” Ahh, very charming.
