Mindy Kaling To Vogue: “I Don’t Want To Be Skinny”

“There’s a whole list of things I would probably change about myself. For example, I’m always trying to lose fifteen pounds. But I never need to be skinny. I don’t want to be skinny. I’m constantly in a state of self-improvement, but I don’t beat myself up over it. … It’s really tempting not to take chances [with fashion]. But I don’t want to be fearful. I don’t want my tombstone to say, she hid her imperfections well on the red carpet.”

Mindy Kaling dared to tell Vogue that she has no interest in being skinny and, amazingly, the world did not explode. I love how honest Kaling is about, yes, trying to lose weight, but also acknowledging that the pursuit of skinniness — being and looking skinny – is not the most important thing in the world. Love her. [Vogue]

Mindy Kaling On Diversity: “I’m A F**king Indian Woman Who Has Her Own F**king Network TV Show, OK?”

“I look at shows on TV, and this is going to just seem defensive, but I’m just gonna say it: I’m a fucking Indian woman who has her own fucking network television show, OK? … I have four series regulars that are women on my show, and no one asks any of the shows I adore — and I won’t name them because they’re my friends — why no leads on their shows are women or of color, and I’m the one that gets lobbied about these things. And I’ll answer them, I will. But I know what’s going on here. … It is a little insulting because, I’m like, God, what can I — oh, I’m sitting in it. I have 75 percent of the lines on the show. … And I’m like, oh wait, it’s not like I’m running a country, I’m not a political figure. I’m someone who’s writing a show and I want to use funny people. And it feels like it diminishes the incredibly funny women who do come on my show… I don’t know, it’s a little frustrating.”

This is Mindy Kaling‘s response (as quoted by Flavorwire) when she got asked at a SXSW panel why Mindy is the only female doctor and the only doctor of color on her show, “The Mindy Project,” which she writes, executive produces, and stars in. I don’t blame her for being defensive or feeling frustrated: it is a show written/produced/starring a woman of color with a bunch of female co-stars and yet these types of questions from journalists still insinuate that Kaling not doing enough. Mindy Kaling Is Just Fine With Her ELLE Cover, Thank You

  • Mindy Kaling is on the cover of the February issue of ELLE, as are three other, skinnier, actresses. Kaling is not showing as much skin or as much of her body in general on her cover of ELLE, in comparison to the three other actresses’ covers. Some people have found this objectionable. So now, Mindy Kaling has responded to complaints that her normal-woman-sized body was covered up on the cover up ELLE with the most Mindy Kaling-est reply ever. [ET Online]
  • Sophia Bush called her brief marriage to “One Tree Hill” costar Chad Michael Murray “two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place” and made reference to them “hating” each other, yet having to deal with it because they still worked together. Sheesh. [US Weekly]
  • The whole family from “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” were in a bad car crash on Monday night, and all suffered multiple, but minor, injuries. Eek! Get well soon. [TMZ]

Lena Dunham Interviews Mindy Kaling In BFF Conversation We Should Have Been Invited To

  • Lena Dunham interviewed Mindy Kaling for RookieMag.com’s second book, Rookie Yearbook 2. “More than half the questions I am asked are about the politics of the way I look,” Mindy Kaling said. “What it feels like to be not skinny/dark-skinned/a minority/not conventionally pretty/female/etc. It’s not very interesting to me, but I know it’s interesting to people reading an interview. Sometimes I get jealous of white male showrunners when 90 percent of their questions are about characters, story structure, creative inspiration, or, hell, even the business of getting a show on the air.” [Rolling Stone]

Mindy Kaling

“I always get asked, ‘Where do you get your confidence?’ I think people are well meaning, but it’s pretty insulting. Because what it means to me is, ‘You, Mindy Kaling, have all the trappings of a very marginalized person. You’re not skinny, you’re not white, you’re a woman. Why on earth would you feel like you’re worth anything?’”

–Mindy Kaling brilliantly deconstructs the media’s obsession with her confidence in the latest issue of Parade magazine. “There are little Indian girls out there who look up to me,” she adds, “and I never want to belittle the honor of being an inspiration to them. But while I’m talking about why I’m so different, white male show runners get to talk about their art.” PREACH. [Marie Claire]
