Mindy Kaling

Shhh. Don’t tell Mindy Kaling, but I didn’t read her first memoir. (Yet!) From what I hear, 2011′s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) was okay. Her publisher thinks it was more-than-okay, because the 33-year-old is going to write a second memoir about “the high highs and the low lows of the past 18 months” during the hiatus before the second season of “The Mindy Project.” And if that’s not enough Mindy Kaling for you, she’s also coming back as Kelly Kapoor for “The Office” series finale. Damn, that girl is going to be busy! I guess there’s no time anymore for lunches with Reese Witherspoon or flirting with President Clinton. [Deadline Hollywood] [Image: WENN]

“We are pretty inseparable best friends with a lot of chemistry ourselves, and we’re not dating. Whenever we date anyone else, I think there’s a period where the person is very skeptical of our friendship — ‘Everyone seems to think you two might be a couple, and I don’t mean to get in the way. Are you sure you’re not dating? Are you sure you’re not going to end up dating?’ It’s such a common thing to have that platonic best friend that becomes a little weird when you start dating someone.”

–BJ Novak, who played Ryan to Mindy Kaling’s Kelly on “The Office,” and is now a producer of her new show “The Mindy Project,” describes how the duo’s real-life BFF relationship often complicates their romantic lives. I had no idea these two were friends in real life, and thinking about it is kind of giving me a cute attack (that’s when you’re so overwhelmed by cuteness you have to breathe into a paper bag for 5 minutes). In related news, BJ just started a two-episode guest appearance on “The Mindy Project,” so we’ll get to see more of their BFF chemistry in action. [Inside TV]

Style Stealer: Mindy Kaling’s Pretty Pattern Mixing

Mindy Kaling always looks so cute, and I especially love this outfit she wore to the FOX Winter 2013 Television Critics Association previews, rocking mixed patterns like a pro. I spent forever trying to find an affordable version of her printed coat, but ultimately had to settle for a polka dot number that’s not an exact replica, but will still go beautifully with a floral dress. After the jump, get the shopping details on all the pieces to recreate Mindy’s look — for $80 or less! Keep reading »

“Do you remember that episode of 30 Rock where Liz got the cheap Lasik and starts crying out of her mouth? It was so funny and a bit grotesque. I just thought, This is the funniest, coolest thing ever. In The Office, I didn’t get that many opportunities to go, Yeah, I’m completely willing to do stuff for comedy. In the pantheon of funniest people ever — Sasha Baron Cohen, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey — they all do these things that show they have no vanity, I’ve been really eager to embrace that.”

Mindy Kaling, on putting it all on the line for comedy. We agree, gross can be really funny, though sometimes gross is just, well, gross (sorry, I’m watching “Scary Movie 4″ as I write this). Point is, female comedians shouldn’t be afraid of looking gross in order to be funny. [NY Mag]

How To Tell The Difference Between A Man And A Boy

I’ve finally gotten around to reading Mindy Kaling’s book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? One of the things that struck me the most is her chapter about the difference between men and boys. She reveals that until she was in her 30s, she only dated boys because men scared the shit out of her:

“Boys are wonderful in a lot of ways. They make amazing, memorable homemade gifts. They’re impulsive. Boys can talk for hours with you in a diner at three in the morning because they don’t have regular work hours. But they suck to date when you turn 30 …Men know what they want and they and they don’t let you in on their inner monologue, and that is scary.”

Why Mindy Kaling Is A True Man Repeller

“I have found it to be true that men tend to not understand or like sequins very much,” actress and writer Mindy Kaling said in an interview on Tuesday with Terry Gross on NPR’s “Fresh Air.” She continued, “Men don’t like the wedge shoe, I have noticed. Men don’t like the statement necklace or chunky, tribal jewelry.”

But, she hasn’t let this “unscientific research” have an impact on what she actually wears. Kaling explained her list is somewhat meaningless, “These are all the things, by the way, that I love, so the overlap in the Venn diagram of things that men hate for women to wear, and things that I love to wear, is almost full overlap … which is unfortunate for me.” Hey-o! Man repeller alert! Hangin' With Mindy

We're seriously psyched about Mindy Kaling's funny memoir. Read More »

“My relationship with my mom is really the single most profound relationship that I’ve ever had in my life,” she tells me. “By the way, it seems like I’m … I’m just blowing my nose. It’s not because I’m sad.” She has allergies and a cold, she promises. But her voice breaks when she starts talking about how she sat down with a pen and paper and asked her mother to give her all the advice she could possibly give her before she died, and Kaling realized she’d never be able to ask her mother for advice again. “I said to her, ‘Mom, I’m going to be so lonely without you.’” She’s crying now but keeps going. “And she just said, ‘You have to be your own best friend. If you always remember that, you will always have someone there with you.’”

– I had no idea that writer/actress Mindy Kaling lost her mother to cancer in the last year, a year that happens to have been one of the most exciting for her career, with her debut memoir becoming a best seller and her pilot being picked up by Fox. Mindy’s entire interview with New York is fantastic, both funny and moving, and it’s quotes like these that make me excited for her new show, “The Mindy Project” (despite initial reports of squicky jokes about race). Her sense of humor always seems to come from a good place, with a lightness to it that still has a lot of depth, and I suspect much of that is due to the parents who raised her. I suspect her mother, wherever she is, is very proud. [NYMag.com]

The Mindy Project

It’s not easy to make offensive jokes about ignorance. One person’s ignorant joke can be another person’s joke about ignorance and even if your comedy has the best of intentions, it’s frequently misunderstood.  Offensive humor is tricky to balance, but smart humorists can do it well.

I believe Mindy Kaling from “The Office” is extremely smart and that she deserves all the success she’s garnered from her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and her upcoming sitcom “The Mindy Project.” But after watching the pilot for “The Mindy Project,” which is airing on Hulu Plus, I have to say I was disappointed about several squicky jokes made about race.
