Unlikely Style Inspiration: “Mildred Pierce”

Everyone’s talking about the HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce,” based on the 1941 novel by James Cain, which ended its five-part run last night. Things really revved up when Evan Rachel Wood entered the scene, playing Mildred’s grown-up and ungrateful daughter Veda. We’re really feeling her ’30s-inspired feminine suits and tailored looks. After the jump, four dresses that conjure Art Deco, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the age of swing. (Merkin not included, FYI.) Keep reading »

Guy Pearce Was A Teenage Bodybuilder

“I won the junior state championship when I was about 16. I just found the whole world of bodybuilding really fascinating. The idea of actually changing yourself was fascinating, and then as I got older I concentrated on developing my mind and spirit rather than my biceps. I was always looking at my biceps wishing they were bigger. I was never quite the proud bodybuilder that I think some guys are.”

No Movie Is Safe From Becoming A Remake

Lately, we’ve been noticing that no movie from your childhood (or your parents’ for that matter) is safe from being remade. “Annie” is being rebooted with Willow Smith in the lead role and new songs by Jay-Z. Warner Brothers is currently working on a remake of “The Bodyguard,” the Whitney Houston classic. Kate Winslet recently rocked period garb for a reimagining of “Mildred Pierce.” Oh, and did we mention that “Dirty Dancing” is getting the remake treatment, too? Sometimes, remakes are a great idea. Other times—and let’s be honest, usually—we wish filmmakers would leave good enough alone. So, we decided to steal a play from New York Magazine and make an Approval Matrix of all the movie remakes. After the jump, the details on these movies. In the comments, sound off on any movies you think we’ve wrongly categorized. And let us know where you’d place the remakes we didn’t include. Kate Winslet And Evan Rachel Wood Remake 1945 Flick “Mildred Pierce” For HBO

All right, who is the Frisky reader with HBO who will have me over for the five-night series of “Mildred Pierce”? Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood star as a mother and daughter in a remake of an old black-and-white Hollywood film about spoiled children, indulgent parenting, sex, resentment and redemption. I’ve seen the 1945 original and lemme tell you, it’s juicy stuff, so I can’t wait to see what they do in 2010. Not to mention Kate Winslet in a period piece (lots of red lipstick and finger waves) should give Joan Crawford a run for her money. [Women And Hollywood] Keep reading »
