To be honest, Milan Fashion Week — which just wrapped up this week — isn’t really my favorite. The designers that show out of Milan tend to be older, stodgier and less young and fun than their London and New York counterparts, yet lack the romance and refinement of the Paris shows. Considering Milan’s position as a somewhat secondary Italian city — whose place on the world map is linked pretty much solely to its status as a design city these days — it’s not surprising that its designers would be somewhat more limited in their scope. Even so, there was some beautiful clothing coming out of Italy’s fashion capital. Check out some of our favorite pieces from the Fall/Winter 2012 collections.

PETA Not The Only Anna WIntour Protesters

This season, Anna Wintour decided to cut her trip to Milan for Fashion Week short, which angered designers hoping to seat the editor at their shows. In retaliation, these protesters, clad in signature Wintour bob wigs and sunglasses, and T-shirts announcing, “I will only stay for 3 days,” took to the streets. Oooh, snap! How To Rock A Headscarf A La The Marni Runway

While designers in New York and London were sculpting elaborate hairdos this year at Fashion Week, Marni went the opposite route by covering it all up—just goes to show you that you that sometimes revealing less is sexier. At the designer’s summer 2010 runway show in Milan, models sported bright, printed headscarves and chunky jewelry, giving off a jet-set vibe that we’re dying to try out ourselves. While it’s probably not a look you can wear to the office (unless you have a casual/stylish work zone like The Frisky does!), a Marni-inspired headscarf style would be great for weekend wear (bring on the large sunglasses) or going out (we’re thinking skinny jeans, a clutch, and some vintage jewelry).

Milan Fashion Week Wrap-Up

Milan Fashion Week is finishing up, and then it’s off to gay Paree. If you were suffering from fashion fatigue this week, here’s a cheat sheet to what the critics had to say:

  • NYT fashion scribe Cathy Horyn was none too pleased with Milan’s presenters, singling out Dolce & Gabbana for “cafe curtain lace” corsets, Marni for “Dr. Seuss characters,” and, “Heavy on beige, Karl Lagerfeld’s boudoir show for Fendi made you think a giant pair of old pantyhose had fallen over Milan.” Ooh, burn.     Dsquared2 Fashion Show Showcases “Starlet Trash” Look In Milan

    WWD revealed on Friday that Dsquared2 has created the wardrobe for Britney Spears’ Circus tour, which kicks off tomorrow in New Orleans. The label, which is designed by Canadian brothers Dan and Dean Caten, has been associated with tabloid queens before (Jessica Simpson, Fergie, Rihanna), and their Fall 2009 collection seems to reflect the starlets that wear their designs. The clothes hold a strong resemblance to what Mary-Kate Olsen might wear on a trip to pick up a tall sugar-free vanilla non-fat extra-ice blended latte at Starbucks: plaid shirts, lots of layers, ripped shorts, loads of bracelets, a huge bag, and big sunglasses.     Bruno Storms Milan Fashion Week

    As much as we love fashion, we also think it’s kind of ridiculous how seriously some people take a bunch of clothes and shoes. That’s why we love Bruno more. Bruno is one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s most famous characters, after Ali G and Borat, of course. The actor/comedian is in the midst of filming the “Bruno” feature length movie and made a, uh, rather memorable appearance at the Prada show at Milan’s Fashion Week. Fierce. (Okay, officially retiring that word now.)
