It does my heart good to see women of all races embrace Michelle Obama. It is too rare indeed for a brown-skinned woman, a descendant of slaves, a product of Chicago’s South Side to be lauded on an international stage. Considering the heavy burden of stereotype still faced by black women, I cheer a little each time the First Lady gets some shine for her strength and smarts. But I note that in their eagerness to identify with Obama and make her emblematic of modern woman, some mainstream feminists unwittingly erase a key part of her identity–her blackness–and deny the experiences and histories of many African American women in the process. I want love to be comfortable yet scintillating and constantly evolving. Even if life’s not full of adrenaline-pumping surprises, I still crave a little adventure. And the butterflies should never die, just perhaps calm down a bit. And just when you think I’ve gotten outlandish with my demands… I want to have all of these things with my best friend.
I believe it exists. Back in 2007, when I really started paying attention to the black man running for president and his elegant, radiant partner, Michelle, I realized that I was more enamored with their interactions than with his take on the issues (I eventually researched those before I stepped into the voting booth, I promise). And on a completely shallow note, Michelle Obama looked amazing in a Tracy Reese dress at last night’s Democratic National Convention — but it was her nail polish that caught my eye. Upon closer inspection — I couldn’t sleep, okay? — the polish appears to be a blue-ish grey color, possibly in tribute to the Democratic Party, but more likely just further proof that she’s naturally fierce in the style department. I’m not sure what brand/color she was wearing, but I found a few similar shades — check ‘em out, after the jump! Keep reading »
Did you watch the televised coverage of the first night of the Democratic National Convention? I did! Now, full disclosure, though I’m sure you guys already know this — I am far-left-leaning lady, and while I’m no fan of the two-party system, I’m obviously more inclined to agree with the Democratic Party’s platform. I’m a progressive — pro-choice, pro-marriage equality, pro-immigration, etc. — and my opinions on what’s said at the RNC and DNC reflect those beliefs. But politics aside… Keep reading »
The look on President Obama’s face as he and his daughters watch First Lady Michelle Obama deliver her speech (which she wrote!) at the Democratic National Convention tonight says it all: “You got this, babe.” Michelle Obama absolutely knocked it out of the park and her husband looks proud indeed. More on the DNC first thing tomorrow, but I couldn’t resist posting this now. Night y’all!
Plenty of absurd things are “artsy,” like crafting Jesus on the cross out of elephant feces or giving birth inside an art gallery as a live action installation. But a drawing of Michelle Obama topless on the cover of Spain’s Magazine de Fuera de Serie is plain old tasteless. In my opinion, they have every right to depict her artistically, even in poor taste. But that doesn’t mean they should do it. Keep reading »
