Pay Tribute To Michelle Obama’s Style Without Wearing A Cheap Knockoff
The Michelle Obama-focused style blog Mrs. O is getting into the Obama-inspired fashion business. Don’t worry, the site hasn’t become completely tasteless and started selling knockoffs of her outfits. Instead, they’re copying her in a cheeky way, by putting her style on an American Apparel shirt. The Mrs. O T-shirt is a trompe l’oeil interpretation of Obama’s final presidential debate outfit, a Maria Pinto dress worn with three Erickson Beamon flora brooches pinned to a single strand of peals. The limited edition shirt will be available for $30 starting today, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to Operation USO Care Package, an initiative the real Mrs. O supported in her 2008 holiday greeting. And The Obama Copycats Begin…
Michelle Obama’s two Inauguration Day outfits are already getting copied. Faviana, known for “reinterpreting” gowns worn by celebrities, drew up sketches immediately after Obama appeared on Tuesday. The knock-off of Isabel Toledo’s lemongrass dress and jacket will retail for $450 and the copy of Jason Wu’s white gown will cost $400, and they, along with other Mrs. O-inspired looks, will be in stores in four to six weeks. This of course might negate the positive effect Obama has been having on independent designers. Also, don’t people realize that they’re not going to look anything like the first lady, even if they wear replicas of her clothes? [NY Daily News] Keep reading »
Malia And Sasha Obama Know What They Like, Fashion-Wise
Michelle Obama is getting a lot of attention for her keen fashion sense, but it seems that she passed along her style gene to daughters Malia and Sasha. In November, the first lady’s team approached J.Crew about submitting sketches for inaugural events, and the label submitted 20 sketches based on details they received about the first family. “Malia, she likes pleats and pared-down things and is not a huge fan of sparkles, but little Sasha loves bright colors and sparkly things,” said Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. It seems that at age 10, Malia’s fashion tastes tend to be on the sophisticated end of the scale, while Sasha, 7, prefers to dress more playfully. So far, Malia and Sasha have worn two outfits each designed for them by J.Crew, and Michelle Obama has worn one; There were 15 outfits, comprised of about six pieces each, created for the Obama women. Come fall, similar clothes will be introduced into the crewcuts by J.Crew line, but they won’t be exactly the same. “They’ll be versions of them but not the exact coat, in that color, with those buttons,” Lyons said. “Malia and Sasha will not go to school next year and see the girl next to them wearing the same coat.” Heaven forbid anyone else have the same coats as the first daughters!
