Newsweek’s Michele Bachmann Cover Has A Case Of Crazy Eyes

I’m sure Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party candidate who is running for president, was thrilled when she heard she’d be on the cover of Newsweek. I am also sure her campaign is freaking out right now over this picture. Could the magazine have possibly found a photo that makes her look more nuts? On the other hand, it’s a perfect illustration of the bigoted, sexist and inane things that come out of her mouth. In this case, the power of imagery is not such a bad thing. Today’s Lady News: Pssst! Did You Hear Michele Bachmann Might Have Menopause?

  • Rep. Michele Bachmann may suffer from migraines, according to a conservative website which is possibly trying to smear the politician. The Republican presidential contender “suffers from stress-induced medical episodes that she has characterized as severe headaches,” according to The Daily Caller, which quoted “three people who have worked closely with Bachmann.” The Caller claims these “episodes” occur roughly once a week and “incapacitate” Bachmann for days at a time, occasionally landing her in the hospital. Asked one aide who spoke anonymously, “As president, when she’s in crisis management mode, is she going to have the physical ability to withstand the most difficult challenges facing America?” Some in the blogosphere are wondering if this leak is trying to insinuate that Bachmann cannot handle the stresses of leadership, possibly because she is a woman. Another theory is that “migraines” is a code word for “menopause,” which may also make Bachmann unpalatable as a candidate. Others say there is nothing sexist at all about reporting Bachmann may suffer from migraines (or whatever). What do you think? [Daily Caller, NYmag.com Daily Intel, XX Factor, Care2]

Jerry Seinfeld Performs A “Comic Intervention” On Jon Stewart

Everyone in the media has been scratching their heads on how to write about Rep. Michele Bachmann‘s bigotry towards gays and her husband Marcus Bachmann’s work “treating” gays in so-called “ex-gay therapy.” He apparently said gay people are “barbarians” that need to be “educated” and “disciplined.” Do we report this as straight news? Blow a gasket over how cruel and dehumanizing they are? Even Jon Stewart struggled with how to report on Marcus Bachmann on last night’s episode of “The Daily Show.” That’s when Jerry Seinfeld came to the rescue and prescribed a spoonful of “ex-comic therapy.”

Fox News Commenter Makes Crack About Palin And Bachmann “Jell-O Wrestling”

Hells bells. The campaign season has barely started and already sexist comments are being made about the women running for office. Fox News commenter Cal Thomas has made a crack about Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin “Jell-O wrestling.” The roundtable was discussing Bachmann’s comment over the weekend that the media wants to see a catfight between her and Palin, which she called a “mud-wrestling fight.” Then Thomas joked about how “Jell-O wrestling” might be more preferable. Oh, what a card. A woman on the panel noted that when Bachmann mentioned mud-wrestling, “that’s where the mind goes.” True, and that’s where a professional pundit should keep his sexist asshat-ery. I’m no fan of either woman, but female politicians deserve better than this. [Media Matters For America] Keep reading »

Michele Bachmann And Sarah Palin Won’t Have A “Mud Wrestling Fight”

“They want to see two girls come together and have a mud-wrestling fight, and I’m not going to give it to them. I’ve got a lot of great respect and admiration for the governor. I appreciate her and I wish her well, and I think that this race is wide open.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann knows the media loves a good catfight. Alas, she and Sarah Palin are not taking the bait. (Yet.) They’ll leave it to these ladies to do the down ‘n’ dirty fighting, thank you. [Reuters]

Michele Bachmann Doesn’t Call Herself A Feminist

I could not have been more annoyed when Sarah Palin called herself a “feminist.” It wasn’t because I think a hairy-legged, Diva Cup-loving separatist in Berkeley should get to decide what a feminist is. (I am quite sure she would take one look at my mani/pedi and send me back to the gallows for more pubic hair braiding.) No, it pissed me off because, while there are some aspects of Palin’s life that actually are rather feminist—she’s a woman in a traditionally male job, she’s a working mom with a mostly-stay-at-home husband, etc. — she went co-opting the word “feminism” as if its hers and hers alone. As this clip of Palin appearing on “The O’Reilly Factor” illustrates, she uses the term “feminist” to suit her needs while at the same time trashing “women’s rights groups … and those [who] do not empower women.” Oh, so now you’re telling us what feminism is, lady who believes abortion should be illegal, gays and lesbians shouldn’t marry, and youngsters should be taught abstinence instead of comprehensive sexual health?

Thankfully, the feminists of America need not worry our pretty little heads about the next arch-conservative swooping in: Michele Bachmann has already come right out to say she is not a feminist. Keep reading »

Michele Bachmann: What Sexist BS Can She Expect While Running For President?

Michele Bachmann photo

Rep. Michele Bachmann formally announced on Monday she is seeking the Republican nomination for President. The feminist within me says, “Yay, someone with a vagina running for president!” Followed by a vehement, “OH HELL NO.” Just because a woman is running for president does not mean all women should support her. Just like Sarah Palin did, Bachmann painfully illustrates this point: She is bigoted against gays and lesbians, opposes legal abortion, and spoke out against a change in the IRS code to make breast pumps for nursing mothers tax deductible. Those are just a few of the policy reasons why Bachmann would make a terrible president. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin A “MILF”

  • Ugh. Obnoxious comments from “Hardball”‘s Chris Matthews and “Real Time”‘s Bill Maher, who were discussing Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann on TV. Matthews said, “They showed up together looking — well, they’re attractive ladies.” And then Maher added: “I think you’re right. You hit on something there. They’re attractive, especially to the Republican Party which is not known as the party that does really well with the opposite sex. Usually they’re doughy white men. I think they look on Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin as, you know, MILFs … and I agree. They’re morons I’d like to forget.” Hey, guys? It’s still sexist — and unprofessional — when liberals say it.
