Who else is sad that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is taking the next few months off from “The View” for maternity leave? (She had her third child this month.) I am, mainly because Lizzie helps instigate some of the show’s most entertaining brawls, and it wouldn’t be fair to expect Sherri Shepherd to up the crazy in her absence. Thank goodness “View” producers have hired Meghan McCain to cover for Hasselbeck. She’s going to do a three-day guest spot starting September 9. Also on board is former Fox News anchor E.D. Hill, who called Barack and Michelle Obama’s infamous fist bump a “terrorist fist jab.” Wait, should Hasselbeck be worried that “The View” might find a permanent replacement? Meghan McCain Wants Us To Forgive Mark Sanford

This week Daily Beast columnist Meghan McCain takes on Mark Sanford — or, rather, she takes on those who are calling for his resignation, writing that he should be forgiven for his affair and that “it’s of very little concern to me who elected officials sleep with.” While I am inclined to agree with her in general, Sanford’s actions, like those of the many other politicians of late, represent an obnoxious hypocrisy which gives them the authority to preach family values while shirking them in their personal lives. Sanford (who McCain has spent personal time with), for example, was a vocal critic of President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky debacle.   • Britney was sued by her former bodyguard, Kerry Vine, for “negligently operat[ing] her home.” Vine claimed the work he was forced to perform at her Los Angeles estate caused him to sustain physical injuries. [TMZ] — We’re hoping “physical injuries” isn’t a euphemism for “coke addiction.”
  • Meghan McCain talked sex and gay marriage with Colbert last night. [Jezebel] — Props to McCain, who proved to be a bit vapid, but sweet and surprisingly open-minded.
  • Photoshop allowed Obama to transform into a “trekkie” for the day — or for however long you keep these photos as your screensaver. [Urlesque] — Sorry, Pres, but you can’t compete with Chris Pine.

    Meghan McCain Thinks The GOP Doesn’t Understand Sex

    Daily Beast columnist Meghan McCain is like an unpredictable lover. Sometimes her columns hit the spot. Others leave me utterly unfulfilled. When she ably took down Laura Ingraham for making fun of her weight and stood up for gay rights, I cheered. This week’s column seemed especially promising, given the subject matter. “The GOP Doesn’t Understand Sex” targeted the GOP’s support of abstinence-only education and argued that conservatives have a serious problem with sex. Sounds compelling, right? McCain thinks so, tweeting, it’s “possibly my most revealing so far. I really hope everyone likes it.”

    Actually, I thought it was meh. While I agreed with much of what she wrote, I didn’t find any of it particularly illuminating. Yes, the Republican party is super stodgy about sex, especially when it comes to teens and women. But I wanted and expected an insider’s look at why this is the case, not a regurgitation of the obvious. Keep reading »

    So, hip-hip-hooray, Meghan McCain got a book deal! For six figures! It’s not Ann Coulter money, but I’m totally jealous. Also, a little irked. What does Meghan McCain have to offer the world that’s worth that many greenbacks? While her new publisher, Hyperion, isn’t saying McCain will be writing about, her columns on The Daily Beast suggest she’ll continue pontificating on the future of the Republican Party and how they can better appeal to her generation. Given the sea of old face that one typically associates with Grand Ol’ Party, pimping Meghan out as the new face of young conservatism is probably a good idea. Then again, maybe it will be a style guide to workin’ a fabulous curvy figure? Conservatives and liberals would buy that. Except Laura Ingraham, of course. [New York Observer] Keep reading »

    Meghan McCain Fights Back Against Fat Attacks

    Meghan McCain, daughter of John McCain and current Daily Beast columnist, has a new piece up on the website about the recent attacks on her weight by conservative pundit Laura Ingraham. Ingraham is Ann Coulter-esque — blond, rabidly conservative, c**ty — and she and McCain have been engaging in a war of words over the future of the Republican party. Meghan, who is socially liberal and fiscally conservative like many young people who vote Republican, has blogged and made TV appearances since the election, talking about how the party needs to get back to their core ideals and get with the times when it comes to social issues like gay marriage. Ingraham response to Meghan’s thoughtful perspective? “[She's] just another Valley Girl gone awry,” she said on MSNBC, and, in a mocking faux-Valley Girl voice, Ingraham made fun of McCain’s body, joking that she didn’t get a “role in the Real World” because “they don’t like plus-sized models.” Even still, McCain, who is half of Ingraham’s age, refused to stoop to her level.     Who Should Meghan McCain Date?

    Poor Meghan McCain. It’s hard dating when you’re the daughter of a former Presidential candidate. Especially when he lost. But I’m not just emoting here — Meghan has expressed these sentiments in a new blog post over at The Daily Beast. In her column, “Looking For Mr. Far Right,” she writes that dating for her is a Catch-22 because she finds that she’s not only not attracted to Obama supporters (for obvious reasons), but hardcore supporters of her father too.
