Happy Election Day — yes, an end to campaign commercials on TV is in sight! Whether you dragged yourself out of bed before work, will stand in line at the polls before going home tonight, or plan to do it mid-day, all that matters is that you exercise your right to vote! Yesterday, I asked readers to tell us why they’re going to vote and share with us the state they live in and races they’re passionate about. Today’s Lady News: California Candidate Meg Whitman Gets Called A “Whore”

  • An aide for California’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate called Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate, a “whore” on a voicemail which was accidentally left on a phone. According to the transcript, it sounds like the aide was specifically trying to say Whitman is a whore for pension reform. Whitman’s campaign released a statement calling it “an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California.” [KPSP, Los Angeles Times]
  • A so-called “crisis pregnancy center” in Wisconsin, which pretends to offer family planning services but in actuality dissuades women from abortion, has paid for a billboard depicting a teen girl and a fetus in her belly. A thought bubble coming from the teen girl reads, “My mom’s going to kill me” and one from the fetus said, “My mom REALLY is going to KILL ME.” Some locals said the billboard is upsetting to young children who may read the sign, but Bay Area Pregnancy Services said it does not think that it’s inappropriate.   • Sigma Gamma Rho, an African-American sorority, has been accused by students at two different colleges (Rutgers in New Jersey and San Jose State in CA) for “hazing” pledges by beating them with wooden paddles. [New York Times]

Today’s Lady News: Meg Whitman Accused Of Employing An Undocumented Maid

  • Meg Whitman’s undocumented maid claimed in a press conference today that she was fired after she asked the California gubernatorial candidate and her husband for help gaining legal status. Nicky Diaz Santillan worked for the Whitman/Harsh family for nine years and claimed they never asked for her legal status before employing her. When Santillan was let go, she claims Meg Whitman told her, “From now on, you don’t know me and I don’t know you.” Her campaign, which touts that Meg Whitman is “tough as nails” on illegal immigration, says the former housekeeper is lying.   • Someone asked President Obama about his support for late-term abortions at a recent town hall-style Q&A. The president replied that abortions should be “safe, legal and rare” and that families “should be the ones making the decision” to have children, not the government. He did not directly address the late-term abortion question, however, other than to say laws prohibit them and “people still argue and disagree about it.” [CNN]
