Inspiration Board: Wearing A Maxi Dress For Fall

Look at Olivia Wilde trying to be all incognito in the photo above. It’s okay, Liv, we’re paying more attention to your early fall look than you, actually. Why are we so smitten with her ensemble, you might ask? Well for starters, we’re suckers for stripe maxi dresses. But even more than that, we love that Olivia took a summer staple and made it appropriate for fall. The trick to successfully working a maxi dress for autumn is to have hints of skin showing while also adding rugged leather and suede pieces. That way you don’t look as if you’re trying to push the season too far or hold on to the last one. A word of caution, though: your leather items should be more boho than biker. Let me tell you a secret: sometimes, when I am feeling supremely lazy, I will wear a maxi dress all day long and then sleep in it that night. I mean, a maxi dress is essentially just a nice-ish looking nightgown, so can you blame me? Well, one maxi dress I won’t be wearing to bed this spring is this slightly dressier version from Gap. Available exclusively online, I love the subtle grey and cream print, racer back, and sexy keyhole in the front. Perfect worn with simple flats during the day and colorful wedges at night, throwing on a fitted denim jacket to keep warm. I’ll figure out my PJ situation later.

Summer months are meant for languid afternoon picnics, happy hours that turn into evenings out, and long boozy brunches. The last thing we have time for when it’s warm outside is thinking about what to wear, and though maxi dresses are a simple go-to, they always need that embellishment that only jewelry can bring. But along with this long white dress comes a built-in dramatic gold necklace, meaning we’re dressed and ready to go before our boyfriends. And that’s an accomplishment.
