I’ve instinctually known that boys were more immature than girls since Charlie chased me around the playground with his bloody wart carcass in 2nd grade. I cried hysterically, which I guess made me immature too. But it was really gross, and warts are contagious, so I felt justified in my outburst. My traumatizing childhood anecdotes aside, a new study confirmed that men are, in fact, the more immature sex. According to the findings, men don’t come of age until they’re about 43, whereas women reach full maturity around age 32. That’s more than a decade on average, which is a bigger gap than I thought. Despite the assertion that men do eventually mature, 80 percent of the women surveyed said that they believe that men “never stop being childish.”

So how do you know if the guy you’re dealing with has hit the maturity tipping point, if you will? Researches came up with a checklist of indicators. For the record, I find many of the “signs of immaturity” to be totally charming (and do a bunch of them myself … crazy dance moves!). I’ll always have love for a man on a skateboard who laughs at his own farts. But a cartoon bedspread and pajamas? Yeah, not so much. After the jump, 30 things that supposedly make a dude immature. Dating Don'ts: Criticism
It's time to put a moratorium on beating yourself up. Read More »

I’ve been thinking a lot about a date I had this weekend. I’m not sure that the guy and I are a right fit for some compatibility reasons, but we did end up having an interesting conversation over coffee on Saturday night. We were discussing the different ways that online dating sucks for girls and for guys. Girls, I was telling him, are inundated with creepy, overly sexual messages from random dudes, including dudes who are way, way, waaaaay too old for us. And this guy was telling me how for dudes, one of the worst things he experiences on a date with a girl is when she is too guarded and gives off a vibe of “I don’t need you.”

The  stereotype may be that women are “too needy,” this guy told me, but the reality of dating strong, successful, accomplished, financially independent women is the exact opposite. “Okay, great, so what role am I supposed to have?” This guy asked me hypothetically. “It’s great if a girl’s got her life together. I think that’s awesome! But I need her to want me to be there because she needs a partner in some way, or else, what’s the point?”  Keep reading »

Increasingly, the line between adulthood and childhood is blurring. Some may blame a crappy economy for careers that strayed from the traditional path. Others adhere to the 30-is-the-new-20 theory. Or maybe a slew of forgotten birthdays got you confused about what year it actually is.

To remind yourself of the progress you’re making, here are 10 signs (among many others, of course), that you’re growing up. How many apply to you? Keep reading »

Are There No Mature Men In Our Age Bracket?

In a Times interview with Chloë Sevigny, the 34-year-old actress dished about her love life. While she’s dated musicians in the past, she said she wants to have kids before she’s 40, and the guys her age and in her social circles aren’t cutting it:

“I don’t know where to find a successful guy. Maybe branching out into different circles? Art parties? The boys from my generation are less driven than the women. I meet great women all the time. We all go out and say, “There are so many beautiful varieties of women here. Where are the men that deserve them?”
