Is It Inappropriate For “Forever 21″ To Sell Maternity Clothes In States With High Teen Pregnancy?

Budget-conscious mommies-to-be are surely excited about Forever 21‘s new line of maternity gear, love21maternity, which is available in Arizona, Alaska, California, Texas and Utah. Finally, cute pregnancy clothes that don’t look like a camping tent! But our friends at The Gloss noticed something of note: Arizona, California and Texas all have high teen pregnancy rates. A teen pregnancy counselor who spoke to CNN about the love21maternity line said that seeing maternity clothes in their stores will “desensitize” teen girls towards pregnancy. Sure, California and Texas have huge populations to begin with. But was the decision to sell maternity clothes in a store favored by teens, in places with lots of pregnant teens, a business-savvy decision? And isn’t that kind of — I dunno — icky? Keep reading »

Maternity Shapewear: Wrong Or Just?

Most of us wear shapewear to try to eliminate any hanging belly. But what if your pooch is something you really can’t get rid of? As in, you’re seven months pregnant and there is definitely a living person in there waiting to come out. Apparently, there’s quite a market for maternity shapewear. Take this getup by Blanqi, for example, an over-the-butt tank top shaper meant to smooth out lines. It also claims to lessen baby weight with its belly support and its “x-shaped back anchors and lifts reducing belly stress.” The question that remains: is it really necessary to wear shapewear when pregnant? Is it useless to try to make yourself seem slightly thinner when you’re obviously carrying? Or, have you tried pregnancy shapers and know them to make having a bun in the oven more comfortable (or more sexy in a dress)? Sound off in the comments below! [Bare Necessities] Keep reading »

What Do We Think Of Christian Siriano’s New Maternity Line?

Pics are out of Christian Siriano‘s new maternity collection (random) for Moody Mamas. We’re not sure what’s to be expected of a designer maternity line (is anyone ever actually excited to wear those clothes?), but what we’re seeing here doesn’t show the fierceness Siriano is known for. What he’s brought to the closet: a series of girly silk dresses, ruffle tops, and standard sweaters. On the other hand, when you’re pregnant, how edgy do you want your clothes to be? Do you want to stand out for being fashion-forward? Or would you rather just wear normal, neutral styles that make you look like what you’re about to become … a mom.

A few more pics of Siriano looks after the jump. What do you think? [StyleFrizz] Keep reading »

Trend Watch: Pregnant Brides On The Rise

A lot of brides have already got something old, something borrowed, and something blue, but now they’ve really got something new — baby bumps! According to the Daily Mail U.K., there was a sudden rise in maternity bridal dress sales to satisfy the estimated 20,000 brides in Britain who were with child on their big day last year. That number accounts for a record 10% of women under 45 who are tying the knot for the first time! Here in the States, one in six brides is preggers — just like Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba when they married their spouses. And these gals are not just waddling down the aisle on their wedding day wearing a muumuu; they’re going for traditional white gowns with big price tags. Keep reading »
