Skinny Jeans Are The Downfall Of The American Man, Says Lady Who Needs A Hug

Sometimes I like to write in a dry style. When I do this, it’s amusing to read comments by commenters who don’t understand that I’m being sarcastic. So I hoped this op-ed which popped up in my Google alerts, “Skinny Jeans, John Wayne, And The Feminization Of America,” was also being very dry. But in fact this author, Jane Gilvary, is quite serious that men in skinny jeans are the downfall of America. How about this gem?

“… real men don’t wear skinny jeans. Real men also don’t wear V-neck tees, or accessorized scarves, and they avoid purple and pink like the plague. The mere idea of a pedicure or waxing makes a real man nauseous. If a woman hangs out with this kind of girly-man routinely, it’s only because she wants to share his wardrobe and his non-fat caramel macchiato.”

Well, menswear-as-womenswear is hot right now. Keep reading »

A Stay-At-Home-Dad: Status Symbol, Mr. Mom, Babysitter … Or Parent?

There are many names you could call a stay-at-home dad who raises the young’uns while wifey brings home the bacon. “Mr. Mom.” The babysitter. Or, according to Marie Claire magazine, a status symbol — the beta husband of the “alpha mom.”

One stay-at-home dad, however, has a different label he would like you to use. This morning, “The Today Show” interviewed a pediatrician mother and her husband, the full-time parent of their toddler daughter. This proud papa was frankly disgusted that traditional stay-at-home mommies at the playground have asked him, “Oh, are you babysitting today?”

“No it’s not babysitting,” he sniffed. “It’s called parenting.” Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Too Pretty To Be A Construction Worker?

  • It hurts to be beautiful: A woman’s attractiveness is considered “detrimental” when applying for stereotypically masculine jobs, according to researchers at the University of Colorado at Denver Business School. Someone get Citibank’s Debrahlee Lorenzana on the phone, stat! [Daily Mail UK]

  • Girls are reaching puberty earlier than ever before — as early as 7 or 8 years old in some cases. According to the journal Pediatrics, researchers are concerned that early puberty might raise the risk of breast cancer because of the increased exposure to estrogen. [Wall Street Journal]

Why Is Sarah Palin Talking About Barack Obama’s Balls?

Fresh off his gabfest with the girls last week on “The View,” Sarah Palin is taking a stab at the president’s masculinity. Appearing on “Fox News Sunday” yesterday, she said Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has “the cojones” — Spanish for “balls” — that President Barack Obama “does not have” to deal with illegal immigration. Arizona, as you surely remember, recently passed strict immigration laws which “would make the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and give the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally,” according to The New York Times. Mind Of Man: I Want To Grow A Sweet Mustache

I always wanted to grow a mustache. Fearsome pimp whiskers. To me, the mustache is to masculinity what long, flowing tresses are to femininity. Aphrodite’s long hair was the source of her sexual authority, which she’d comb while sitting inside her pet oyster “Chester.” Aries, God of the pointy phallus and the shield, wore a ‘stache no doubt soaked in the blood of a minotaur. This ideal was implanted in me at a young age. Growing up, there were three men who defined manliness. To a little kid, being manly was being a hero. Not that a woman or a girl couldn’t be a hero, but it was more likely that I grew up to be a man who helped those in need than a woman who would help those in need. Keep reading »

NJ Parents Freak Over Boys’ “Crossdressing” Fashion Show At Elementary School

It’s never too early to reinforce gender roles!

Wilkins Elementary School in Maple Shade Township has canceled its third grade class’ Women’s History Month fashion show after (wait for it … ) a parent complained that the boys and girls were both asked to create an outfit from a period of women’s history, like the ’20s or the ’70s. Teacher Tonya Uibel sent home a packet for parents (which included photos of style icons like Madonna and Twiggy) and said kids should create an outfit to better understand how women’s fashion and women’s roles have changed over time. Boys’ Clubs Are Back At British Universities — Why?

Most colleges these days have a women’s group and lots of colleges have a Women’s Studies, or even better, a Gender & Sexuality Studies program. But recently, male students at Oxford University and Manchester University in the U.K. have started their very own “men’s groups” to work through their issues with the current state of dude-dom.

According to an article in the Guardian, the men’s groups, which are called Man Collective and MENS Society (Masculinity, Exploring, Networking and Support), respectively, have caused quite a bit of controversy across the pond, with critics saying they’re just glorified frats promoting sexist, macho behavior.

Could it be that modern day “men’s groups” are just a grown-up version of the He-Man Woman Haters Club (from “The Little Rascals”)? Keep reading »

Study Finds Scars Make Men Sexier

While my Jewish grandmother could probably give you a bunch of different reasons why I’m still single, researchers from the Universities of Liverpool and Stirling think they’ve solved my problem. Last week, The Frisky’s resident cutie pie, Catherine, asked us to confess what turns us on. Here’s what I admitted:

“I love a man with scars, especially from acne. I can’t explain the attraction. Sometimes I have to ask myself: ‘Am I into this guy or am I just hot for his acne scars?”

It’s true. My friends tease me like I’m some sort of scar-fetishist because I always go for dudes with “damage.” To them I say the old Apple Jack’s slogan, “Hey, we eat what we like!” I like me a face full of scars and apparently I’m not alone…. Keep reading »

Quickies!: Beyonce Might Not Be Having Babies Quite Yet

  • Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown are trying to prevent Bobby’s tell-all book from coming out. In it he describes how his ex-wife introduced him to cocaine. Now that I know this little tidbit of info, I don’t really need to read the book. [Media Takeout]
