Michel Stipe Wants You to Wear A Cassette

Though Martin Margiela is a huge recluse, the brand is getting a very recognizable face, in the form of Michael Stipe from R.E.M. He’s designed a silver microcassette as a form of jewelry. But the really fun part with this is that he’s leaving it all up to the wearer. Fashion it like a necklace, use it on a headband, attach it to your shoelaces — it’s all up to your creativity. “The microcassette can not be defined as either a piece of jewelery or an art object,” a Margiela spokesperson said. “It’s both and neither at the same time. It can be worn or displayed in any way the wearer and owner desires.”

What Will Become Of Maison Martin Margiela?

While some designers, like Karl Lagerfeld, love to take center stage — he’s even translated his life and iPod obsession into a documentary –Martin Margiela is quite the opposite.

He prefers to stay hidden in the shadows. So hidden, in fact, that most blogs use a question mark in place of a picture for him, because there’s only one known image of the designer (published in The New York Times). But his secretive lifestyle doesn’t stop the fashion crowd who live for his surrealist creations and edgy, conversation-provoking pieces. Keep reading »

Wacky Shoes Abound!

Crazy shoes. They’re all the rage! Last week, we admired Rodarte‘s urban glamazon heels that could have been made from leftover parts found at the local mechanic’s. Yesterday in Milan, Miuccia Prada debuted a series of Lucite and plastic chandelier shoes with a rainbow of heel colors and swinging crystals. Equipped with what looks to be a velcro strap, the Prada footwear looks somewhat comfy — at least they didn’t send the models tumbling, as did Rodarte’s Nicholas Kirkwood stilettos. After the jump, two more highlights of the over-the-top heels trend! Keep reading »

Martin Margiela Calls These Sunglasses

We get it, Martin Margiela. You like to think outside of the box, you’re a non-conformist (as evidenced by your recent cray-cray couture creation). But must you insist on being so out there that your new sunglasses have practically no form at all? From the Fall/Winter 09 collection, these men’s shades are more like a windshield for your face. For the price of nearly half a grand, you could probably just as easily bend some plexiglass over your face. [Colette.fr] Keep reading »

Is Fashion Art? (Margiela Couture Makes Us Wonder)

LA Times blogger Elizabeth Snead has a bone to pick with Maison Martin Margiela’s couturiers. She writes:

“The oceans are dying, children are suffering around the world, the ozone is disappearing, and the polar ice caps are melting, and this is the best idea you can come with up for us to wear in a few months? Is it any wonder no one takes high fashion designers’ suggestions to heart anymore?”

Okay, it’s kind of funny and true (in a sad way), but at the same time, this brings us back around to the age old question: When it comes to fashion, and more specifically, to the meticulously crafted works we see during couture week, should we consider it art or, um, just really unwearable clothes? Let’s discuss! Keep reading »
