Florida’s State Attorney is pursuing 60 years behind bars for Marissa Alexander, a Black woman who fired a “warning shot” in the direction of her estranged husband and his two kids.
In August 2010, Alexander’s husband allegedly read messages from her ex on her cell phone and got so enraged that he strangled her neck and threatened to kill her. She grabbed a gun from the garage, where she was stuck inside, and fired a “warning shot” into the air, near where his kids were standing. She did not injure or kill anyone yet she was unsuccessfully able to argue the Stand Your Ground law. An appeals court threw out the case and in November, Marissa was released on bond from her 20-year conviction. Now, State Attorney Angela Corey is seeking 60 years — three times the original sentence — as punishment. Keep reading »
A little bit of good news on this Thanksgiving Day. Marissa Alexander, the Florida woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot at her abusive husband, has been released on bond. She is now under house arrest as she awaits a new trial. Her pre-trial release comes with conditions, which include:
- Remain under the supervision of the pretrial services program at all times
- Subject to electronic monitoring through the CTC at all times
- Remain on home detention until completion of her case and will be allowed to leave her residence except for court appearances, medical emergencies and to satisfy any requirements of PSP or the CTC Keep reading »

After the broke free, the 31-year-old mom of three fired a handgun into the air in an attempt to scare him off. Note: she didn’t actually injure him or anyone else.

A Florida woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Friday for firing a warning shot — note: not actually injuring anyone — at her abusive husband.
Marissa Alexander, 31, said that in August 2010, her now ex-husband Rico Gray read messages from her ex on her cell phone, became enraged, strangled her and threatened her life. When Alexander broke free, she tried to run out of the house but couldn’t get out of the garage; so she grabbed a gun from the garage and fired it into the air to attempt to scare Gray off.
No one was injured, but the “warning shot” hit a wall near where his two kids were standing. As such, she was charged and found guilty by a jury of three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, which carries a 20-year sentence. Keep reading »
