This November, MTV’s “Total Request Live” is going on “hiatus,” after 10 years of celebrity appearances, musical performances, and screaming fans. Even though I haven’t watched the show in years, I’m strangely sad about the news. This was the show I raced home from school to watch! When I was younger, my mother didn’t like me watching MTV, so I would have to be really sneaky and flip to another channel if she came into the living room.
Since it was live (hence the “L”), a lot of crazy stuff went down at MTV’s Times Square studios. Check out our favorite moments on the music video countdown show — and share yours in the comments!
- In 2001, Mariah Carey showed up to TRL wearing only an over-sized T-shirt that said “Loverboy” and a pair of heels, while pushing an ice cream cart. Then, she stripped off her shirt to reveal gold go-go shorts and a green “Supergirl” halter. “You’re my therapy session right now, Carson,” she declared. “Every now and then somebody need a little therapy, and today is that moment for me.” She didn’t really make much sense, and shortly after the surprise TRL appearance, she actually suffered a physical and emotional breakdown and checked into a hospital. Apparently, “Carson therapy” wasn’t enough.

Marriage is so out this wedding season! Only Mariah Carey is doing it, that’s how over it is. After a nuptial-less summer — not even Kate Moss made it down the aisle — we started noticing the new Hollywood trend. Longterm partnerships (sans diamonds, splashy affairs, and cheesy photos) are the must-have Ray-Ban Wayfarers of relationships! After both had failed marriages, hippie generation icons Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been going at it, without making it official, for 25 years. In an interview, Goldie claimed their secret to success is, “knowing I can walk out at any moment…that keeps things fresh.” And after going through the pain of divorce, many stars seem to agree.

Happy couple Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon keep getting photographed in identical outfits. It’s like they’re going to the senior prom every day. Honestly, what is it with couples that dress alike? Okay, the occasional matching outfit can be a funny way of realizing how right you are for each other, but when you wake up in the morning and have to discuss color coordinating, you’re taking things too far! Although, we’re sure with the leash Mrs. Mariah has got on Mr. Carey, he’s not really allowed to stray at all — especially to colors that don’t look good on her. However, the same outfits are even ridiculous for a diva like Mimi. If you’re in love with your style twin it’s like you’re too lazy to masturbate. Show the world you both really are a match by wearing different clothes. [DListed] Keep reading »
So, Nick Cannon’s wedding ring. From the looks of this photo, it is large and covered in diamonds. Eek. Men shouldn’t be allowed to have gems on their wedding bands. I realize this is discrimination, but men who wear diamond rings are just trying to be Tony Soprano or P.Diddy. Like, because they’re hyper-masculine, they’re allowed to wear diamonds. If a guy wants people to know he has money, he should buy a vintage Cartier watch. Or a private island. [PopSugar] Keep reading »
Newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are on the cover of People this week. “We really do feel we are soulmates,” Carey says. “I never felt a love like this was in the cards for me.” Cannon agrees, saying, “She is beautiful on the outside and 10 times as beautiful on the inside.” Aww. So no pre-nup huh?
