The End Zone: Guys, Stop Mansplaining Football To Me

The End Zone: Guys, Stop Mansplaining Football To Me

If you ask a woman what the worst part of being a female football fan is, they’ll most likely not love that you’ve segregated them into the boat of “female football fan,” but even that’s a close second to having an ostensibly well-intentioned male football fan mansplain the game to you. Just because I mused out loud the merits of starting Carson Palmer over Eli Manning at QB2 in my PPR league doesn’t mean that I need to be walked through the merits of running it down the middle on 4th and 8 (which, as an aside, if you think running it down the middle on 4th and 8th is a viable strategy, you, friend, are in no position to lecture me about football). Some of the worst offenses? Keep reading »

The current furor over street harassment is hard to miss. Everything from Internet message boards to Facebook pages are littered with gender driven discussions on an issue that has become a hot-button topic the world over. There are countless voices in the mix, but sadly, many of the loudest male opinions serve to dismiss any serious consideration of street harassment’s impact on female autonomy. The result is that many women and girls continue to feel threatened when walking or participating in public places.

This discomfort is often internalized and so passively condoned, empowering the aggressors in not only continuing their harassment but justifying their behavior. Some of these rationalizations are more common than others and are often called upon to derail any conversations highlighting the issue. For that reason, I have created a comprehensive list for ladies with responses to these typical arguments posed by men who believe street harassment is a “crazy” feminist idea that really does not need to be addressed. “I was a double major in college in mathematics and political science, and I served for six years on the House Budget Committee in my first six years in the House. And I am very confident that when proposals come before the U.S. Senate, I will be able to evaluate them as to how they benefit or harm middle-class Wisconsinites. A yardstick of ‘does it create jobs,’ ‘does it lower the deficit’ and ‘does it help grow the middle class’ is an important one. I’m quite confident that I have those abilities.”

– This is Rep. Tammy Baldwin, the senator-elect in Wisconsin, in response to some laughable mansplaining on account of WI’s Senator Ron Johnson. Baldwin has served in office for two years longer than Johnson and, as stated above, she was a freaking math major with six years on the House Budget Committee in her state. Yet Senator Johnson told the Associated Press he was hopeful he could sit down with her and “lay out for her my best understanding of the federal budget because they’re simply the facts. Hopefully she’ll agree with what the facts are and work toward common sense solutions.” Oh, Senator Johnson, whatever would your longer-serving female colleague do without you?! Thank goodness she has someone to “lay out” YOUR “understanding” for her. [Huffington Post]

Have you ever dated a mansplainer? You know, one of those dudes who feels the need to tell you exactly how the world works by spouting off incredibly obvious information. According to Urban Dictionary, mansplaining is simply: “To explain in a patronizing manner, assuming total ignorance on the part of those listening. The mansplainer is often shocked and hurt when their mansplanation is not taken as absolute fact, criticized or even rejected altogether.”

So yes, you’ve met/dated/dumped one, right?

Dr. Drew Pinsky is utterly clueless about about bondage, dominance, and sadomascochism in relationships and has no business discussing them on national television. That is my conclusion after seeing Dr. Drew brought in as an “expert,” and yes those air quotes are intentional, on “The Today Show” recently to discuss the book 50 Shades Of Grey. As you may have heard, the explicit, erotic BDSM romance novel about a dominant/submissive relationship has become extremely popular with women across the country — slightly surprising considering how being whipped and spanked is not everyone’s cup of tea. I have not read 50 Shades myself yet, but I’ve read numerous other BDSM novels, short stories, and  true-life tales, and I’ve been in consensual submissive/dominant relationships since the age 18 or 19. So I can say with 110 percent confidence that he does not know what he is talking about and Dr. Drew actually did a huge disservice to women and men when he called the book “actual violence against women.” Keep reading »
