Put On Your Seatbelts Because Kirsten Dunst Is Turning Japanese

Remember when Kirsten Dunst was running around Japan, looking all wacky anime? Well, if you had told me, “Oh, she’s making a total insane cover of that ‘Turning Japanese’ song directed by McG,” I would not have believed you. Even if you swore it was true. Yet, that appears to be what we have here. It’s called “‘Akihabara Majokko Princess.” Obviously. In order to spare you any trauma brought on by an overdose of manga or exposure to anime quasi-nudity featured in said video, we’ve embedded it after the jump. Watch it. I dare you not to get the song stuck in your head forever. Oh, and if you don’t know what “turning Japanese” means, ask your mom. Keep reading »

Karl Lagerfeld Is Watching His Figurine

Seems like Karl Lagerfeld has been lightening up recently which is nice, because, really dude, why so serious? Now the K-man’s image is getting a makeover in the form of a 10-inch collectible. Designed by Tokidoki, Mini Karl comes all Manga‘d-out, but still retains his signature style: black suit, tie, sunglasses, fingerless gloves. (Although, that stance actually looks Schwarzenegger-esque, no?)

Naturally, Karl wouldn’t want just anyone getting their hands on the doll. The limited edition collection contains just 1,000 models, which will be sold at Colette in Paris, and in the New York and L.A. Tokidoki stores.

Of course, all Mini Karl might do is make real Karl’s ego bigger. [WWD]

We’ve got to admit that Kirsten Dunst looks completely eye-catching (in a cuh-razy kind of way) all dolled up in her Manga finest. Is it a look she should wear every day? Probably not. Are we totally down to try it out? Yes, we are. How to dress like human anime after the jump. Keep reading »

Transform Your Face Into A Whole Lotta Ugly

Top Row: Original, Child, Teen; Middle Row: Afro-Caribbean, East Asian, Masculinese; Bottom Row: Modigliani, 50% Ape, Manga

How much do I love fun online gizmos which allow you to upload a photo and distort your appearance in bizarre ways? The Face Transformer allows you to see what you’d look like as a baby, a teenager (always uglier, fyi) Afro-Caribbean, East-Asian, Manga cartoon, or muse of Modigliani, amongst others. Needless to say, I look scary as anything other than a young adult white woman. Though I do think I am a touch fetching as a Manga cartoon. Now go have fun! [The Face Transformer] Keep reading »

Roleplaying For Women At Tokyo Cafe

A Japanese cafe devoted to “boy-love manga,” or comics about boy-boy romance for female readers, the first of its kind, opened late last year. Business is going well so far — that particular genre is undergoing a huge revival in Japan. At Edelstein, modeled after a 1970s comic book about romance at a German school, feminine-looking waiters pretend to do homework so customers can escape into a different world.

In Japan, role play cafes for men have been popular for a while, but female “otaku,” the term for geeky fans of comics and animated movies, tend to be better looking, trendier, and more sociable then male otaku, according to a Reuters article. And 150 boy-love manga and magazines are published every month in Japan, so more of these cafes will probably follow. Interestingly enough, one of the popular themes in these comics is putting these feminine-looking guys in near-death situations. Hopefully this won’t happen at Edelstein. [Reuters] Keep reading »
