I fell in love with the colorful fit and flare coats Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama wore to the presidential inauguration, and now I’m dying to get one of my own to wear for important events in my non-presidential life, such as going grocery shopping. If you want to join the the fit and flare party too, click through for 10 cozy coats in fun, feminine silhouettes…
Darn those Obama ladies for dressing warmly on an ice cold day and making it look easy. The First Family pulled out all the stops for the Inauguration this morning, with the First Lady wearing a Thom Browne coat and dress, a Reed Krakoff cardigan, J.Crew belt and shoes, and a Cathy Waterman necklace. Malia, 14, is also wearing J.Crew and Sasha, 11, is wearing Kate Spade. Michelle’s mom Marian Robinson didn’t get any style credits, which is a shame, because she looks pretty toasty too! [BuzzFeed]
Barack Obama came out on top in last night’s history-making election, and we couldn’t be happier (or more sedated — it takes a lot of Valium to get through that vote count). Of course, our president is the first to say that he’d never have gotten where he is without his girls behind him, and they certainly dress the part of the picturesque first family.
The sisters chose similar silhouettes, with high-waisted circle skirts, easy flats, and tucked-in tops, but Malia’s bold colorblocking in contrast to Sasha’s sweet bow-front blouse (and that gorgeous watercolor green skirt) flaunted their individual sartorial preferences. They both managed to channel a cool, contemporary vibe while still looking like, well, the president’s children. Michelle wore a streamlined oxblood Michael Kors dress which, if you’re a steadfast follower of the first lady’s style, may look familiar — she wore it a few times back in 2010. Mrs. Obama knows full well that fashion isn’t single-use-only, and that’s exactly why we love her. (Among, like, a million other reasons, but that’s one of them.)
The White House knows that the public looooooves it when Barack Obama talks about his children — and we should, those kids are adorable — so it doesn’t surprise me his campaign released a video of POTUS recounting this one time he tried to do Malia’s hair when she was four. And he really sucked at it. Eh, the president can’t be good at everything. [Buzzfeed]
Stop being so damn cute, Obama family! I can’t tell whose dress I want to fight over more: Michelle‘s or Malia‘s. (Yes, I am envious of a 13-year-old girl’s wardrobe.) [Mrs-O.com]
“It’s only a matter of time until Malia gets her learner’s permit so I’m hoping to see one of those models that gets a top speed of 15 miles an hour and the ejector seat any time boys are in the car. So, hopefully you guys have some of those in the pipeline.”
—President Obama joked in a speech to the auto industry that 13-year-old Malia Obama will be getting her learner’s permit in a few years, so they’d better get cracking on a daddy-approved vehicle. Hey, lots of parents would like this idea, actually. Hmm, has he stumbled upon a way to save the auto industry? [Essence] Keep reading »
Another week, another inappropriate Rush Limbaugh comment. Yesterday on his radio show, the conservative talk show host was discussing the hot topic of the day: TSA airport pat-downs. “Do you know when Obama went swimming with his daughter to show it was safe, during the oil spill?” He asked. “How about taking his daughter through [an airport] screening? How about Obama take [sic] his daughter to the airport and have a TSA grope her (emphasis mine), go through the exact routine with Obama’s daughter that everybody’s else’s daughter goes through, just to show it’s safe for everybody. Like he did in the Gulf with the oil spill.” Ew!
Oh, but it gets worse: Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, also weighed in on “Fox News” with creepy comments about pat-downs on the bodies of the women in the First Family… Keep reading »
