Quotable: Is It A Faux Pas To Match Your Makeup To Your Outfit?

“If the shade is in the same family, but a slight variation it should be okay.”

– Jillian Dempsey, a celebrity makeup artist and Patrick Dempsey‘s wife, answered a question that’s been on my mind since Michelle Obama wore blue eyeshadow with a blue gown to the White House State Dinner. The first lady followed Jillian’s rule; her eyeshadow is close to teal, whereas, her gown is a royal blue. To read more of Jillian’s makeup tips from her Avon Twitterview check out #AvonJDBeauty. Burberry Gets Beautiful With New Cosmetics Line

Remember that episode of “Full House” when D.J. begins middle school and starts caking on the makeup and dressing like a slut to fit in with the cool girls? In the end, it was wise Aunt Becky who imparted upon her some of the best womanly advice: “The secret to makeup is to look like you’re not wearing any.” That’s the concept behind Burberry‘s new line of cosmetics. In fact, in describing the collection’s feel it sounds almost as if Christopher Bailey, creative director of the British fashion house, lifted lines from the family sitcom script. He explains: “The Burberry girl wears just a trace of makeup — no crazy eyes or crazy lips … Makeup should enhance women, not just cover up what they perceive as flaws.” The mix of products relies on subdued hues (“inspired by the label’s classic trench coat and by the moody hues of the British climate,” reports the New York Times“) and brings classy packaging to lipsticks, foundations, powders, and more.

Worth checking out if you’re a Burberry fan. Or just feeling nostalgic for “Full House.” [T Magazine Blog] Keep reading »

Beauty Test Drive: Illamasqua Pure Pigment In Static

I’ve found a miracle in a pot, and, no, I’m not talking illicit drugs. I’m basically obsessed with my latest multi-tasking makeup find. Illamasqua, a British cosmetic company that crossed the pond about a year ago, is known for its bold and vibrant makeup colors, so I was super excited when Catherine (miss ya, girl!) handed me a pot of Pure Pigment in Static, an iridescent purplish-pink. The New Meaning Of Drawn-On Lips

Back in the ’90s, no one wanted anyone to know they used lip liner to make their lips look fuller. But now, the new trend is to totally relocate your lips so they can be any size you want ‘em. But seriously, while this looks cool in a beauty editorial, I hope no one tries it for real. [Trend Hunter] Keep reading »

Urban Outfitters Gets In On The Beauty Game

Urban Outfitters knows that even hipsters need makeup. Following in the general direction of Topshop, the retailer has launched a mega online beauty shop. We’re loving the selection for the cute, niche brands like Paul & Joe, Anna Sui, and DuWop, but the best thing about this new venture is the stock of indie makeup labels you may have never seen before. Today, we discovered Japonesque, a line of super-slick eyelash tools; Girlactik, a collection of glam, shimmery makeup; and Cutler, a specialist in top-notch hair products. See what good Urban can do when they stick to what they’re good at (instead of, you know, telling us how to eat)? Enjoy! [Urban Outfitters] Keep reading »

Give Katy Perry’s Purple Eyeshadow A Try

It’s hard to ignore the hideous ’80s images that flash before our eyes when we think of purple eyeshadow, but a recent uptick in celebs pulling off the look has forced us to re-consider our fear of the stuff. Katy Perry may look a little bit like a pretty bobblehead doll in this picture but her shimmery purple shadow definitely isn’t to blame; her eye makeup is gorgeous. Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and a handful of other classy ladies have tried out the look, too, all with great success. After studying their triumphant purple eyeshadow usage, we came up with a few universal tips for trying out plum-colored eye makeup. [Elle UK] Keep reading »

Tried & True: CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus

Despite health risks, I’m a huge fan of lining the inner rim of my eyes with deep black eye makeup. For years, I searched for the perfect eyeliner to provide a deep black rim, throwing away more money than I care to think about while testing countless options. Finally, I found my go-to during college, and luckily it was cheap! CoverGirl’s Perfect Point Plus has all of my requisites: a soft pencil for simple, delicate application; a self sharpener; and a smudge brush for days I’m feeling the need to go a little Taylor Momsen with my liner. You’ll find that this eyeliner not only covers your inner rims quickly and easily, but it holds up throughout the day and needs only minimal re-application. With CoverGirl’s liner, I’m also able to draw a perfect line on my upper eyelids , and I never have to deal with scratchy, painful application since it’s self sharpening. I promise you won’t be disappointed with this option, and with the cheap price tag, your wallet will be pleased, too. [$4.99, Target] Keep reading »

Beauty Test Drive: Dior 5-Color Eyeshadow Palette

I’m not an eyeshadow girl. I hate how it tends to get all built up in the crease of your eyes, and before you know it, you look like a hooker doing the walk of shame. Or else you have to put on tons before it looks like anything, and all of a sudden, it’s very obviously too much and you have to give up, stay in, and buy, like, 20 cats. Lucky for me (and you, because I was going to keep going with these scenarios), there is good eyeshadow to be had. Recently, I tried Dior’s five-color palette. The packaging is a little flashy, but this stuff gets the job done. The consistency is nice, it blends easily, and the colors in each set are lovely and complementary. Though pricey, at $58 each, they do come with five colors, so if you’re looking to improve your eyeshadow situation, it might be worth the splurge. [$58, Sephora] Keep reading »
