MAC’s Disney-Themed Collection Looks Kind Of Like The Kid Stuff To Us

When it comes to cosmetics, how important is the packaging to you? Are you likely to buy something just because it has something distinctive on it? Like, for example, MAC‘s new Disney-themed makeup collection, which features cartoon character designs of some of the empire’s villains like Cruella De Ville, the Evil Queen from Snow White, and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. This is just our opinion, but to us, these products feel a bit like your normal MAC purchases simply re-packaged with new graphics. And we also kind of feel like from afar, pulling out an Evil Queen lip gloss from your purse might look like you’re lacquering up with the souvenir you got from your last Disneyland trip (or the souvenir you stole from your 11-year-old cousin’s makeup box). After all, regular Disney kid makeup (bottom lip gloss images) seem fairly similar, at least in the straightforward packaging and aesthetic. No? [Refinery 29, PartyCity] Keep reading »

Would You Go A Week Without Makeup?

This week some inspired bloggers are taking on a new challenge: a week without makeup, initiated by writer Rachel White of the blog Rabbit Write. Says White:

“It’s not about taking a week off because make-up is somehow bad or because not wearing it is better. It’s that by taking a week off, I should be able to understand my relationship to cosmetics more clearly. Why do I feel I need to sketch on eyebrow pencil before going to the grocery? To shellac my face before seeing a friend? And if I am going to a networking event or party, can I feel comfortable in anything less than contoured cheeks and caked on lashes?

Frisky Rant: Can Nail Polish Stop Being Ugly, Please?

Fashion’s Night Out is on Friday, which means the fashion industry’s brightest bulbs will clack around New York City trying to get you to buy stuff. But makeup freaks everywhere await Chanel’s debut three new nail polishes: khaki brun, khaki vert, and khaki rose. Or, as I see them, baby poop brown, pea soup green, and bathtub grime red. Inspiration For Your Fall Nail Palette

Three reasons we love nail polish:

  1. It’s something you can change about your look in a few minutes time.
  2. It’s a cheap and easy way to add something special to your wardrobe or outfit theme.
  3. The trends are always changing, making it a pleasant surprise to find that gray actually looks really sophisticated on your hands.

This fall, we’re cultivating our nail polish palette with muted hues of gray and brown, earthy tones, and some rich pinkish reds to remind us of the changing leaves. Check out our suggestions after the jump! Keep reading »

Which Lipstick Trend Do You Prefer For Fall—Matte Or Glossy?

Not since the days of Cindy Crawford and plum-brown shades have we really rocked a matte lip. But Nars Cosmetics is bringing the texture back with the announcement of their new Pure Matte lipstick. Another lipstick debut that has garnered lots of blog attention recently—Tom Ford’s Private Blend collection, which features a super-glam, high-sheen finish.

Are you a matte or glossy kind of girl? For which seasons/occasions do you switch it up? [Talking Makeup, Luxist] Keep reading »

These Fake Eyelashes Are Made From Flies’ Legs

Yes, this may be the creepiest thing you see all day. Here, artist and sculptor Jessica Harrison has traded in those phony, synthetic fake eyelashes for eyelashes made from the legs of flies. You read that right. Flies’ legs. Mostly, I try and be opened-minded about these things, but, among a whole host of other things, what about hygiene? Lord knows where those flies’ legs were before they got ripped off. The Frisky ladies will not be working this trend. Keep reading »

Do You Still Wear Lip Liner?

Maybe it’s just us, but has lip liner become a bit obscure? It certainly had its heyday back in the J. Lo era of the ’90s, but we haven’t seen much noticeable proof of it being around in recent years. As for us, we still have a few pencils around, but have mainly replaced our lip liner with lip stains, which create a nice slow-fading base for lipstick or glosses. What about you … do you use lip liner? If so, how do you rock it? Leave your answers in the comments below! Keep reading »

Beauty Test Drive: L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Stars Collection

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with lipstick for the last two years. I love red lipstick and apply it perfectly in the morning, even using a matching lip liner to outline and fill in my lips first. But it never fails that once I take a mouthful of yogurt at work, my spoon is wearing most of my lipstick. I can’t stand to see lipstick marks on utensils, glasses, or napkins, especially if I’m the smudgy culprit. What I hate more, though, is having lipstick on my teeth and no one telling me. So I was pretty psyched to try out L’Oreal’s Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Stars Collection in Beyonce Red, a very vibrant red suitable for life in the limelight and on stage. The Infallible lip color basecoat and topcoat are housed in a handy-dandy compact that functions as a mirror in a pinch too. Although the name suggests this cosmetic is incapable of error, there are some rules to follow. Keep reading »

Which Beauty Products Can You Share With Friends?

Personally, I would never, ever use the tester products at stores like Sephora. Everyone’s grimy fingers and germs are all over everything, the makeup palettes are left out for who knows how long, and it’s just plain dirty. But while I would never share beauty items with strangers, I’m not so picky with friends. My best best friends are allowed to borrow certain items — lip balm, eyeshadow, and blush, but never eyeliner or mascara for some reason. So when I found out just which items I should and shouldn’t be sharing, I was more than a little shocked. Read on to find out which beauty products to keep to yourself. Keep reading »
