Is Madonna A Fashion Has-Been?

Photos of Madonna

I’ve noticed lately that many fashion magazines and blogs are referencing Madonna‘s style from eras past, as they’ve often done. Take, for instance, this mini photo spread from the October 2009 issue of InStyle, in which Madonna’s style influence is evident on three of today’s biggest pop stars—Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. The only problem is the most recent look from Madonna that is reinterpreted is from 1994, which makes me wonder if anyone takes their fashion cues from her present style. Don’t get me wrong, Madonna is still fashionable, but is she also setting trends like she used to or is she simply following the fashion pack? Check out 10 of her recent looks, decide for yourself, and let me know your verdict in the comments. I’m sure you’ll definitely notice a color theme.

Is Madonna Working On Another Book?

Madonna

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Fabien Baron, an art director who worked on Madonna‘s Sex book, reveals that he’s working on a new book with the icon. So, what’s it about? Why, Madonna, of course! Supposedly, it’s a coffee table book, “a massive retrospective of the queen of reinvention as photographed over the years by everyone from Herb Ritts to Steven Klein.” Sounds very Madge. “I’m not sure I’m supposed to talk about it yet,” Baron says. Ooops. Too late now. [The Daily Beast]

Frisky Charticle: The History Of Pantslessness

Carine Roitfeld in a a leotard

French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld is my mom’s age. So why in God’s name is she going pantsless in lace tights and hooker boots, forcing us to be sick all over the place? I don’t care what people say about age being just a number, 55 is far too high a number for this Lady Gaga-esque behavior. In an effort to come to terms with a former icon’s decline, we’ve constructed a highly scientific chart tracing the progress of pantslessness through the last four decades. It won’t be easy, but taking the journey from ‘70s roller girls all the way up to Carine is cathartic somehow.

Completely Conflicting Madonna/Jesus Luz Stories Make Us Distrust Gossip Columns

Conflicting Madonna/Jesus Luz Stories

Today’s New York gossip columns confused me. Page Six in the New York Post ran an item about how Mandonna is hustling to make sure that boyfriend Jesus Luz becomes an in-demand celebrity deejay. “Madonna is prepared to grind hard to promote man-candy Jesus Luz’s career,” the story claimed, before describing her attending his DJ gig at the Standard Hotel last night and heating up the dance floor to make a good impression. Meanwhile, Gatecrasher in the New York Daily News went with the exact opposite story: “Madonna beau Jesus Luz lacking Material support for DJ dreams.” They decided that, since Madonna had not offered to do a collaboration with Jesus, she wasn’t in his corner. And furthermore, since Jesus didn’t play a Madonna song during his set, he was clearly hurt by the situation. A nice illustration of just how tenuous gossip columns are, no? [NY Post, NY Daily News]

Support The Latest Celebrity Cause: Save The Gypsies

Madonna fights Gypsy discrimination

Causes like rebuilding New Orleans, protesting animal cruelty with PETA, and helping poor children are totally played out. No, today’s press-seeking celebrity will have to come up with something more exotic. How about saving the Gypsies?! In Eastern Europe, especially in Romania where their population is close to half a million (that’s a lot of caravans!), Gypsies are facing major discrimination in housing, health care and education due to their nomadic ways. Who better to help them get the equal rights they deserve than the former material girl, Madonna. Always on the cutting edge, she spoke out about Gypsy discrimination at a recent concert in Bucharest to the dismay of many of her non-Gypsy fans, who booed her offstage. But Madge does not stand alone in the fight. Another celeb is applauding Madonna’s Gypsy support. Ethan Hawke and his mom Leslie, who has been running a charity organization to support the Gypsies since 2000, think Madonna is a gem for raising awareness about the problem. She even donated a pair of autographed Christian Dior shoes to be auctioned off at a recent Gypsy charity ball. Next stop for Madge … Gypsy baby adoption? [PopEater]

Lourdes In Louboutins: At What Age Should Girls Start Wearing Designer?

lourdes ciccone

It was inevitable that Madonna‘s eldest, Lourdes Ciccone Leon, would be a style icon by the time she became a teenager. Well, now we know what’s in the closet of the 13-year-old celebuspawn, thanks to the tell-tale red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes, which tend to retail at about $600 per pair. Here, Lourdes was recently spotted wearing a pair of these must-have studded flats. Of course, the children of celebrities are naturally predisposed to be well-dressed in luxury goods, and they’re some damn lucky kids. But for the rest of the “normal” world, at what age should girls be allowed to wear high-end designer labels? It seems like more and more, there’s a growing culture of teens and pre-teens who are just really, really well-dressed. Honestly, it does make us a little jealous. When we were 13 years old, we would have given anything to live in Cher Horowitz’s closet. How old were you when you started wearing more high-end goods? At what age is it appropriate (if any) for the younger set to start sporting Louboutins, Chanel purses, or whatever happens to be hot these days on Shopbop? [Style Frizz]

Madonna And Other Celebrity Neighbors From Hell

Madonna

Central Park West resident Karen George is suing her co-op board because it has not reigned in her “neighbor from hell”—Madonna. George claims that Madonna makes an insane amount of noise, especially when she rehearses in her living space and the dance music literally vibrates the walls. The building super says Madonna’s been threatened with eviction. Um, who throws out the Material Girl? You’d think keeping her around would up property values enough that folks wouldn’t be so concerned about the noise? [All Headline News]

Interestingly, she isn’t nearly the only celeb we wouldn’t want to live next door to.

The Cast Of “Glee” Prepares To “Vogue”

Madonna Songs On

You know when two good things are put together and it becomes this super-sized amazing thing? Think chocolate and peanut butter or grilled cheese and tomato soup. Well, get ready for the television equivalent. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Madonna has given everyone’s favorite new TV show, “Glee,” carte-blanche rights to use her songs. Rumor has it that, early next year, there will be an episode of the show featuring only Madonna tunes. Oh, the possibilities are endless. Rachel singing “Cherish,” or Mr. Schuester giving his version of “Human Nature.” And, hopefully, Kurt will get a shot at “Vogue.” [EW]

Memory Lane: How Madonna’s “Immaculate Collection” Changed My Life

How Madonna's

I graduated from stories-on-tape on the first night of Chanukah in 1995, when my sister gave me my first real album—Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection on cassette. I was 10, and at 14 years my senior, my sister was part of the Madonna generation, but this wasn’t something I registered until much later.

Getting your first album—your first encounter with musical pop culture—has to be one of the most definitive moments in a girl’s childhood. For me, the Madonna cassette represented a new grown-up connection to my sister. Everything before—games, stuffed animals, books—had marked the differences between us. While I couldn’t wear the same clothes and makeup as her, I could at least now listen to her music.

Celebrities Like Madonna And Lady Gaga Sure Enjoy A Dance-Off

Madonna and Lady Gaga Dance-Off

If you saw “Saturday Night Live” last week, you know that Madonna and Lady Gaga had a fake makeout sesh. But on Sunday night, the two pop stars had a real life dance-off at a New York City club! The DJ, Jus Ske, started alternating “Holiday” and “Poker Face” while the ladies got down on the dance floor. An onlooker said, “Madonna seemed to be the winner. People were going wild.” No kidding Madonna won. Lady Gaga only has one dance move and it’s creepy. If only someone had a camera phone video! [NY Post]

Thankfully, plenty of other celebrity dance-offs have been recorded and are actually pretty hilarious!

Lady Gaga (With A Thumbs Up From Madonna) Kills It On “SNL”

If Lady Gaga didn’t end up winning over some of her haters last night, after performing on “Saturday Night Live,” then they’re a lost cause. The pop diva absolutely knocked it out of the park, performing both “Paparazzi” and a medley of her songs, including “Poker Face” (in a gyroscope-enabled dress, natch)—showing off not only her ability to put on an entertaining show, but also her singing talent. Madonna showed up to join Gaga in one of my personal favorite regular skits, “Deep House Dish,” which came off a little awkward, but still was a nice little endorsement from the Queen of Pop. Clip of that, after the jump.

Crave: Madonna “Celebration” T-Shirt (Win One!)

Madonna Celebration greatest hits album

Madonna has been a part of our life basically since we were born. We didn’t listen to her as babies, of course, but back in the ‘80s when we came into the world, the original pop star had already begun to make the music we’ve been enjoying since we got our first Walkman. Madonna’s greatest hits album, Celebration, hit stores this week, and it’s got all the good stuff on there – from “Papa Don’t Preach” to “4 Minutes” featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. Put on one of these shirts that hearken back to Madge’s earlier days, throw on a few black jelly bracelets and maybe a rosary necklace, then gyrate around to your favorite tune. [Celebrate/Madonna, iTunes]

We’re giving away five Madonna Celebration T-Shirts, but you have to work if you want the Material Girl in your closet. The five best commenters for this coming week—from today, Friday, Oct. 2 through Thursday, Oct. 8—will be awarded with one. So, be as clever, smart, and original as you can! Quote Of The Day: Madonna On How Young Is Too Young

Madonna On Dating Younger Men

“You have to be old enough to dress yourself … Younger people are generally more adventurous—they’re more open, more fun—have you met many guys my age? Guys my age are married or divorced or grumpy, fat and balding.”

Madonna Has A Pizza Date With Letterman

Madonna made her eighth visit to “Letterman” last night, arriving through the door of The Ed Sullivan Theater carried by a slew of handsome hockey players. “It’s the one sport I haven’t explored,” Madonna later quipped — a reference to her well-documented dating history with a variety of sports stars. Letterman asked about her recent divorce and she joked that her marriage lasted through the “Bush years,” when it was a “good time to be out of America” and that she’d rather “get run over by a train” than ever marry again. They ended the interview with Madonna’s first slice of NY pizza, which she probably spit into her napkin when the cameras stopped rolling. After all, she doesn’t like cheese on her pie. Clip above.

20 Awesome Women With A Gap Between Their Front Teeth

Gap Toothed Women

I have a gap between my two front teeth. It’s not big enough to drive a truck through (unless it’s a very, very tiny truck), but I can whistle like a bird and shoot water in a fancy stream. Every time I go to the dentist, they ask: “Do you want to fix that?” No! It’s part of what makes me me. Gap-toothed women have been around since the beginning of tooth history. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer described the Wife of Bath legendarily: “Gat-toothed was she.” The fancy name for this dental space is Diastema. Supposedly, gap-toothed women are oversexed and well-traveled. True or false? Check out these awesome gap-toothed ladies!

What’s Madonna’s Sexiest Video?

Paging all Madonnaphiles! The Daily Beast has gone through the trouble of rounding up the “9 Sexiest Madonna Videos” of all time. Some of their picks are spot-on—“Like a Virgin,” “Justify My Love,” “Like a Prayer.” But other choices are downright weird—“Ray of Light” never struck me as particularly sexy. The most notably absent sexy Madonna video? “Human Nature.” You’d think being chained to a chair, spanking a dog, and wearing a latex bikini would count for something in a woman’s career. New Zealand Bathrooms Are An Accidental Ode To Madonna’s Cone-Shaped Bustier

Madonna Bustier Bathrooms

There’s an uproar in New Zealand over some bathrooms being built on the waterfront in the capital of Wellington. The unisex bathrooms are meant to resemble crayfish, but some are saying they look more like fallopian tubes or Madonna’s famous cone-shaped bustier (which was recently immortalized in necklace form). The design was the winning entry from a competition between 30 young designers from an architecture school, and it will cost about $278,000 to build. What do you think the bathrooms resemble? We’re not sure they remind us of Madonna’s bustier, but they certainly are bizarre-looking. [The Dominion Post, Sydney Morning Herald]
