I think we would all agree that Salma Hayek is one of the most beautiful women alive. But according to her interview in the latest issue of Lucky, she wasn’t always a swan. I know, how is that even possible? She claims that when she was a young, struggling actress in LA she battled with bad acne and extra weight. “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad, it sent me into a severe, severe depression. Like I couldn’t leave the house. I’d wake up in the morning and lie there and touch my face before I got up, just to prepare myself to look in the mirror! … The next stage with that sort of depression is food: too little, or too much … I was fat and broken out, I couldn’t leave the house and I couldn’t pay the rent!” I’m sure she speaks the truth, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. Kirsten Dunst Once Cut Her Hair Short For A Dude

“The last time I cut my hair short, my boyfriend at the time was like, ‘You look so much better with short hair.’ So I cut it off. I know, I know, so stupid! My girlfriend thinks he just didn’t want any guys to look at me. … I attract a difference kind of boy when my hair’s red. I get more quality men—like a more thoughtful, nerdy dude.”

– Kirsten Dunst, who I absolutely loved in the Lars Von Trier film “Melancholia,” tells the January issue of Lucky how boys have influenced and reacted to her changing hair over the years. Hmm, I’ve had my hair a variety of colors but haven’t personally noticed a difference in the guys I’ve attracted. Though I do think I’ve had more luck attracting them period since my hair has been a more natural brown. My blonde period wasn’t very eventual, romance wise. What about you? “I got so much scrutiny for putting on extra pounds, but I think that the decision not to make myself anorexic was actually great for branding. Because when you’re really, really skinny, not everybody can relate to you.”

– Jessica Simpson, who announced she’s expecting her first child earlier this week, is on the cover of the December issue of Lucky and seems to spend a lot of time during the interview discussing her weight. Jessica tells the magazine that she likes the way she looks “now,” which the mag describes as “not the celebrity ideal” because she stopped spending “six hours a day on the Exercycle and going on a juice cleanse.” Of the change in her body, Simpson says she “didn’t cry about it too much,” in part, it seems, because of the positive response she received from real women who found her more relatable as a result. I read (and by “read” I mean “look,” as there aren’t many words to begin with) Lucky religiously every month. For the most part, the clothes featured in the magazine are outside my price range (at least at full price), but I always get something out of the issue. I’ll discover a cool new beauty product or get ideas for styling a new outfit out of the clothes I already have. When I cracked open the February 2011 issue of the magazine (with Nicole Richie on the cover), I learned something truly shocking: Some people actually think it makes sense to spend $40 on a single pair of cotton brief underwear. Now, I love Lucky, the women’s magazine about shopping, as much as the next style geek seeking relatable fashion (and I even still own the very first issue of Lucky), but I can’t for the life of me understand why Condé Nast is going to publish LuckyKids. Former “Lucky” Column Inspires New Website

You might have noticed something different about the December issue of Lucky magazine. Creative director Andrea Linnett’s illustrated “Fashion Babble” column was missing from the last page. The column hasn’t died—it’s just moved. Linnett has revived the former fashion story on a new site called I Want to Be Her!, where she features stylish or fashion-forward women. I Want to Be Her! is presented in illustration form, like “Fashion Babble,” but what’s even better is that each piece is hotlinked to an actual clothing item, making shopping easier. The illustrations are the creation of Anne Johnston Albert, an illustrator and designer who also drew “Fashion Babble.” I’ve already fallen in love with the “Cute Barneys Girl” story (above), and have plans to recreate that look, but I’m sure there will be many more sartorial illustrations to spark outfit ideas. Lucky Makes Shopping Even Easier

Even though its sister magazine Domino folded last week, Lucky will continue to bring readers their shopping fix, and now they’ll even do the legwork for you. Today the magazine launched a free iPhone application, Lucky at Your Service Digital Concierge, that helps you find clothes featured in the magazine at a store near you. Right now, the application features the more than 70 shoes listed in its March shoe guide and lets users shop by type, brand, color, and size. After you’ve found something you want, just click the “Find It Near You” button and it will either use GPS or a ZIP code to determine a where your shoe of choice is available. You can even call and have them put on hold. Just one way Lucky is trying to do their part to help the economy bounce back! I can’t wait to pick up the latest issue of Lucky magazine every month because it always presents the best fashion possibilities. One of the things I appreciate about this mag is that the editors don’t think everyone should look alike. Instead, they allow their readers to draw inspiration from different style icons and stylish women.
